Sameeha on Encyclopedia > A. J. Cronin 258 days 23 hours 49 minutes 12 seconds ago INTRODUCTION ABT AUTHOR
Archibald Joseph Cronin was born on 19 July 1896 in Cardross, Dumbartonshire, Scotland.
He was a novelist, dramatist, and nonfiction writer whose works examine moral conflicts between the individual and society as his idealistic heroes pursue justice for the common man. His moralistic novels are known by the public for their memorable characters, powerful themes, and melodramatic plots used to set up Cronin's optimistic endings. While the early novels focus on social or moral issues of modern life, the later ones have more-spiritual themes, and the critics generally consider his ideas to be better than his skills.
His best-known works are Hatter's Castle, The Stars Look Down, The Citadel, The Keys of the Kingdom and The Green Years, all of which were adapted to film. He also created the Dr. Finlay character, the hero of a series of stories that served as the basis for the popular BBC television and radio series entitled Dr. Finlay's Casebook. He died on January 06, 1981

Comparative Study

"Two gentlemen of Verona" & "An Irish Rose" are the two heart touching stories written by A.J. Cronin.
He has very well carved the idea of 'selfless help ' and explained the importance of dedication towards relationships in the story Two Gentlemen of Verona. The story revolves around the two boys named Nicola and Jacopo who do numerous things to earn money only to pay for their sister 's treatment who suffers from tuberculosis of the spine.
The story begins with the narrator driving down the foothills of the Alps. Here is when he first encounters the two brothers selling wild strawberries. Even after the driver forbade the narrator to buy the wild fruits, he bought the biggest basket and drove towards the town. This scene emphasises on the first step of growing intimacy between the narrator and the two boys.
Next day, the boys were found shining shoes in the public square. This amazed the narrator. Here is when they revealed the fact that they did numerous kinds of things to earn money. Here, the narrator is shown to develop a soft corner for them in his heart. He finds them to be innocent, serious, pleasant and earnest.
The boys are very useful for the narrator. They are very willing to satisfy all that the narrator required. They were also found selling newspapers by the narrator one stormy night. One day, when the narrator asked if he could help them in any way they said they would be very grateful if they got a lift to the nearby village Poleta. Although it didn 't come in the narrator 's way he took them there. The boys got down in a building and asked the author to wait in a nearby cafe while they would be back within an hour.
Eagerness led the narrator to follow the boys up to a place which was actually a hospital. On peeping through a room led by a nurse, he realised that the boys were talking to a girl who resembled them. He did not feel like intruding and thus asked the nurse the details about the boys. This is when the nurse told him there heart rendering story about their father being killed in a war and home being destroyed in a war and their sister suffering from tuberculosis. The brothers lived in a shelter and literally starved only so that they could pay for their sister 's treatment. Them keeping a secret and helping their sister showed that war had not shaken their spirit. They were noble and gentle and great human beings in their own special yet subtle way. This story distinctly talks about how true the amplification says: “All that glitters is not gold,” in turn explaining the fact that appearances are deceptive

In an irish rose ,The main characters in the story Rose Donegan a very young lady about fourteen had many responsibilities regarding her brothers and her father who spends most of his time in a nearby bar. She sees life much seriously with love and affection towards her brothers and her father and always has a pleasant smile and attitude. One of the most important perspectives about her character is her pleasant attitude towards anything and anyone and of course her deep affection, which results in sacrificing her life.
Here Rose Donegan has to earn for the family, buy milk for her youngest brother Michel. She had to cook, attend to the children and father. With a slum child’s elemental knowledge she had to do everything, even she would bargain the baker to extend her credit for an extra loaf.
Rose has a shaggy dressing which shows the deprived condition of the family; even she had to pawn the new dress that Cronin had paid for her.

Reading such a story could take us to such families where the children (elder) had to deal with all responsibilities. Responsibilities are rejected by the responsible. And future becomes unpredictable.

Two gentlemen of Verona and An Irish Rose, written by A.J Cronin are comparatively same in its theme or situation.
The story Two gentlemen of Verona, tells us about two brothers who devoted their life fore their elder sister, Lucia who was suffering from tuberculosis. the two little brothers named Nicola and jacopo are ready to do any kind of jobs, such as selling news papers, selling fruits , polishing shoes and working as tourist Guides, to earn money. they were not ready to accept any kind of sympathy from any others
In the story An Irish rose, aj Cronin displays picture of a poor girl who where devoted her life for her little baby brother. sacrifising her self for him and at last she is dieing.
In the Irish Rose as well as the Two Gentlemen of Verona, we can find supreme sacrifice. n the author finds hope for a better future of the world after meeting Rose, Jacopo and Nicolo. Never thinking for themselves, all three of his characters have fought to better the lives of their loved ones in every way possible. In Irish Rose We Find A Sister Sacrifcing Hr life for her brothers whereas in two gentlemen of verona we find brothers sacrificing their life for sister.
Herein we find the hope for a better world when these children grow up rather than the war ravaged time frame in which the stories are set.
It was W. B. Yeats who said that, “Too long a sacrifice can make a stone of the heart”. But through these stories Cronin has endeavored to prove Yeats wrong, as nicely as possible. He was also able to teach us the value of not running away from our responsibilities.

In both the stories the plot is set in a rousing manner and giving a detailed and graphic expression till the climax.
The plot is arranged in a rousing style, the exposition is highly detailed and gives a clear idea of the scenes, and his graphic description as mentioned above also add to it. The rising action of the story contains many momentarily good events which make the climax much more effective. In the climax he is resolving into the sacrifice, love, or affection etc of
The climax occurs after the entire crisis ended, the situation seems good before the climax and it gets tragic in the next paragraph where it has a beautiful ending.

In an analysis of the characters portrayed in both the works we can find certain similarities. In an Irish Rose , Rose plays the central character of the story. She sacrifices her life by looking after her baby brother who lost mother when he was one month old. the main character Rose Donegan has to earn for the family, buy milk for her youngest brother Michel. She had to cook, attend to the children and father. With a slum child’s elemental knowledge she had to do everything, even she would bargain the baker to extend her credit for an extra loaf. The other characters in the story include the Carroll’s, a middle aged couple, childless and prosperous. Also include the youngest brother of Rose; Michel, who is nine months old. Other than Michel there are three more children who are younger than Rose, Donegan her father and the writer himself. The minor characters were meaningful making the rising action good.
In case of "Two gentlemen of Verona " it is the touching story of Jacopo & Nicola ,two brothers aged 12 & 13 who do odd jobs and live a hard life themselves to sustain and treat their elder sister Lucia who is suffering from tuberculosis of spine. .They were truly gentlemen .They never gave up ,never asked for help and didn't accept the pity of the two visitors .They had their self respect in them .They never gave up the spirit of living .They helped the two visitors in every possible way ,which we often see gentlemen doing .They didn't tell the visitor about their plans .They did not want to expose it as the gentlemen do .They were very helping .They also loved their sister who was admitted in hospital . They were very poor but they visited the hospital every weekend and paid the hospital charges from the money which they earned through various works they did .
As stated above we can see the characters themselves in a moral and sacrificial light wherein they are not thinking or living for themselves but for their respectie siblings. If we go into the actual character portrayal too, we can find how the characters are dressed in rags to save even the smallest penny for their siblings comfort. They do not even eat or dress well lest they have to spend any money, which can be found to have a better use for their siblings.Along with the writer the rest of the characters too play a significant role in the plot to finally bring out the actual sacrifice of the three children.

In both the stories the importance given to the children’s attitude towards work, love and responsibility shows how important the said characters are in the view of the author too.

fouad haidar ahmad on Government > Corruption 263 days 14 hours 31 minutes 23 seconds ago Uncontrollable expansion resulting from random settlements centering around trade places makes the governments responsible in the first degree. Cities must be planned for in every sense and at every standard so that the internal migration can be controlled by governments. Besides, governments are responsible to expand new settlements for the natives in the rural areas so that all service would be available. In other words, organizing the needs and setting up settlements only by planning will create stability in employment. I say that employment and salary scales stability are the only way to curb corruption.

Nick O'Taine on Health > Tobacco > Cigarette consumption 267 days 15 hours 47 minutes 35 seconds ago According to the CDC, US consumption peaked at 4,325 per capita in 1963, remained nearly as high through 1977, and subsequently declined to 1,619 in 2006. In 2010, roughly 19% smoked, of which 75% did so every day, which would mean an average 31 / day for the 14% daily consumers and another 5% who claim to smoke occasionally. Roughly 40% of Greeks smoke, which would also mean an average of about 31/ day for the smokers. In other countries, the incidence of smokers versus non-smokers may also drive the better part of the variance, but some places may have a higher ratio of occasional smokers.
ed on People > Divorce rate 271 days 18 hours 33 minutes 35 seconds ago obviously one can not assume divorce rate somehow is parallel with how happy couples are in the relationships. for instance in sri lanka or india divorce rates are very low. but they also favor arranged marriages as well. the higher the divorce rate in country the more females are acknowledged there as humans and have more rights. because country like armenia for example has low divorce rates, but if you know many armenians you know that its almost impossible to get divorced for a woman due to family pressure and also men tend to cheat a lot on their wives. so divorce rates are really not the factor to decide whether couples are happier in one country or the other.
