Actually the figures are total incidents, not adjusted for population. The crime rate in America is not 11.8m per 100,000 inhabitants ;) |

Compare the crime numbers with population:
US population 315,000,000 Crimes 12,000,000
UK population 63,000,000 Crimes 6,500,000
Geman population 82,000,000 Crimes 6,500,000
Canada population 35,000,000 Crimes 2,500,000
You do the math. |

@Bill Peterson: Your math is off. The US rate is between 30 and 31 per 1M pop. That's the #13 spot on that European list. (The US has 9100-9500 gun homicides and ~310M pop.) |

The figures are incidents per 100,000 people, not the total number. It is a rate that is normalized across the different countries, so you can compare them without correcting for population. This has already been done. The US has the highest RATE of reported crime. Though, I don't believe the numbers come entirely from police reports. They mention that the figures also come from surveys, where crimes not reported to the police would still be included. |

I thought, actually, that Nauru had the highest obese population in the world, due to their poor, largely canned meat, diets.
From Wikipedia:" Nauruans are the most obese people in the world: 97 per cent of men and 93 per cent of women are overweight or obese.[78] As a result, Nauru has the world's highest level of type 2 diabetes, with more than 40 per cent of the population affected.[79] Other significant dietary-related problems on Nauru include kidney disease and heart disease. Life expectancy on Nauru in 2009 was 60.6 years for males and 68.0 years for females.[80]" |

There have been no (zero) machine gun deaths in the US since those guns were outlawed in 1934. |

I have read the invaluable book, "K L Saighal A definitive biography" by the highly learned scholar, Pran Nevile. The book is a great tresure that throws a flood of light on the growth, gradual devopment and the incomparable greatness of K L Saighal who was, is and will ever be the only superdivine singer of unimaginably melodious music. I, who have written a short piece of writing on Sri.K L.Saighal in a newspaper in the year,1999 have been a very deeply dovoted listener of K L S for the past fifty years and am listening with great devotion through C.Ds, his songs in almost all the films he has sung. Not a day passes in my life without me hearing this Supergod's thrilling music. I look upon K L S as not a man but a God from far above the empyrean. I've almost all the songs of K L S but "Hai rathenazaara phir" and the two Tamil songs the superpower is said to have sung in the Tamil movie,Devadas.
I always feel very unlucky for not having seen this greatest soul during his lifetime. My elder son is also a highly devoted liker of K L S.for years. I have no words to tell the incomparable divine and impressiveness of Saigal's songs whose voice and sweetness of rendition none even in elysium can imitate. |

If gun ownership has something to do with the criteria, notice that Israel and Switzerland, where firearms are mandatory, are not on this list |

@Roger: You're correct that we should look at the data per capita, but you're comparing apples (murder with firearms) to oranges (total murder) with that link. The real comparison is here: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_gun_vio_hom_fir_hom_rat_per_100_pop-rate-per-100-000-pop The US is #8 on that list, after South Africa, Columbia, Thailand, Guatemala, Paraguay, Zimbabwe, and Mexico. |

Though corruption has been versed on diverse issues,we fail to understand the fact that it perpetuated by human beings(affecting the general nature of man) like us with a different(inhumane) idea on how to achieve wealth and power.
In Nigeria,a country blessed with diverse natural resources, there is a physiological thinking by many, that owning a particular parastatal or portfolio is, "a do or die affair",knowing very well that it's an arena for amassing great wealth and consequently power. The pack up wealth for a generation who they do not want to to strife for a justified wealth and also for unnecessary luxuries.Luxuries that they do not go with to the next world(death). They tend to forget the fact that no burial has been attained, where all the materialistic things a man got(cars, houses=mansions, jets, official buildings, private islands;the list is unending) is mentioned or buried with him.BUT rather their achievements to the benefit of mankind is remembered. And thus they are revered. |

Ummm...Juarez had 5K murders in one year. That's one city that has almost half as much homicide via gun than all of US without adjusted per capita. |

To Roger's point, I agree the rate per capita is the best way to look at it. Although the US is not on the chart Roger refers to (top 37 Murders per Capita), the reason is not because our per capita rate is below those other countries. The US rate is actually 90/1 million which would put it #6 on the website Roger refers to if the US had been included. Our rate is more than 100 times that of #37 Spain. |
