Jeff, from Edmonton, Canada on Energy > Oil reserves 2854 days 18 hours 3 minutes 23 seconds ago Natasha Wilson is correct in saying the statistics for Canada are very misleading. The Athabasca oil sands, along with a number of surrounding oil sands fields, do have the world's largest 'in-place' oil deposit - 2.4 trillion barrels. The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board, an entity of the Government of Alberta (for which I work), places the total recoverable amount of oil (with current technology) at about 300 billion barrels, of which 176 billion is counted as proven reserves that are economically feasible for recovery. The United States Department of Energy has accepted the 176 billion figure as the 'official' figure and has placed Canada as having the second largest oil reserves in the world. The companies in the oil sands are currently producing approximately 1 million barrels per day of synthetic sweet crude (upgraded from the bitumen of the oil sands). In fact, the production from the oil sands surpasses that from conventional oil methods. We are on track to see oil sands production reach 3 million barrels per day within 10 to 15 years. And, FYI, the oil sands have been under development since the late 1960s, and a near-constant reduction in costs has consistently increased the viability and size of the reserves.

hafiz on Malaysia Profile 2879 days 4 hours 43 minutes 23 seconds ago "The country is a federal parliamentary republic where despite democratic structures there is no fair chance for the opposition."

Are you kidding? Do you know that the opposition have won in Kelantan for more than 20 years? "No fair chance-the general election is held every 4 years and everybody is free to choose their leader" - okay, so that means that it is us Malaysians that doesn't want the opposition to lead the country coz we believe in our current leader...

on Media > Phone subscribers 2883 days 5 hours 31 minutes 22 seconds ago
Until recently fixed line and mobile telephones accounted for all of the telephone market. However, lately several companies have launched telephony services that operate over the internet called Voice over Internet Protocols (VoIP). The main benefit of VoIP is the lower cost per call, and calls within the network are usually free. However, the hardware used for VoIP can be more expensive. The main drawback of VoIP is that high compression techniques are used to save internet bandwidth, which can lead to low call quality. If the internet network used by a persons VoIP system is congested call quality can also suffer.

Many telecommunications companies are launching VoIP services to retain customers, but there are several pure VoIP companies. Two main ones are:

Skype: This is a program that is downloaded onto a computer, and needs only a microphone, speakers and internet connection to work. As of mid-2005 Skype boasted over 125 million downloads worldwide, although not all of these are active users. Skype measures its usage in terms of the number of minutes people have talked on its service -- in mid-2005 the company passed the 10 billion minutes served mark.

Vonage: This service resembles are more typical phone service with a telephone and monthly bill. Vonage claims to be signing up 15,000 people every week in the United States and aims to have one million customers by 2006.

on Media > Newspapers 2883 days 5 hours 57 minutes 29 seconds ago
The number of newspapers within a country is dependant on a lot of factors. One of those factors is the population of a country. India is the second most populous country in the world with over a billion people, so it is unsurprising the country has so many newspapers. Turkey is the 14th most populous country with over 69 million inhabitants. The United States -- with over 295 million people -- has 1,476 newspapers, second only behind India. China, the most populous country in the world with over 1.2 billion people, has only 909 newspapers (source). To get a clear understanding of the number of newspapers in a country it is best to view the stat per capita.

As Akshay mentioned, the level of freedom of speech within a country would also effect the number of newspapers. Countries with a democratic government tend to have more newspapers per capita. A diverse media is essential for a democracy to function effectively. The more diverse the media is the more likely it is that a particular story will be told, and the more points of view there are reported on each story. The countries citizens are therefore more able to make informed judgements on the effectiveness of their government and vote accordingly. This effect can be neutralized if a large number of the newspapers and other media outlets in a country are concentrated in a few companies.

The level of regulation of the media industry would also effect the number of newspapers within a country.

on Media > Films produced 2883 days 6 hours 34 minutes 12 seconds ago
The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) started as a hobby project by an international group of movie fans and has kept that sensibility. The site has over 400,000 movies catalogued complete with trivia. However, the database is not a complete record of all movies made in all countries, and as the staff is spread over Europe and the United States there is a bias towards movies from those regions. The statistic is best viewed as the number of movies from each country that are shown in those regions.
Evan on 2887 days 13 hours 29 minutes 33 seconds ago Americans maintain the use of personal firearms for protection against criminals, and it works. It has been shown that the more stringent the gun control laws, the higher violent crime rates a nation has; it should also be noted that gun control laws only work for the law abiding citizenry, not the rapists and murderers. Being rapists and murderers, they tend to not follow laws.
Vladislav on Russia Profile 2894 days 1 minute 14 seconds ago Russia was partially "put" in Asia by Western Europeans because of snobbishness and age-long mutual hostility. Also Siberia is so big that when you make a map and you want to put the word "Russia" on it so that it would be in the center of the country it will have to be written on top of Siberia, which is in Asia.

81% of the country are Slavs- people who are similar to Serbs albeit w/o the Turkish mixture.

Most people look like any other Europeans. If Russians appears anywhere in Asia, especially in the Far East, people immediately assume that these are Americans and talk to them in English.

Russia has a sizeable Asian population- Tatars, Buryats, etc. These are not ethnically Russian and they have their own "non-independent countries' called republics.

Unlike in the US where Asians ( and everybody else) are immigrants and do not have their "Asian state", the Asians in Russia are living in their own big areas where they have always lived. In Siberia Russians ( read European people) outnumber them 9 to 1. There is little interracial hostility unless these Asians move to Moscow where racism is on the upswing.
Luís Almeida on Portugal Profile 2895 days 1 hour 4 minutes 17 seconds ago Portugal became an independent country in 1143 but was recognised only in 1172. However, 1143 remains the official date of Portugal's independence.
