Jenna, the climate of Guyana is tropical, with hot, humid weather moderated by northeast trade winds. There are two rainy seasons, one from May to mid-August, and another from mid-November to mid-January. For more information on Guyana, check the detailed country profile or th encyclopedia.

Lance Fishman, if you want to see how much economic aid countries give in relation to each other as a percentage of their GDP, see the statistics on economic aid donors per $ GDP, where you’ll see that Denmark is the only country in the world in which economic aid amounts to over 1 percent of GDP. Another page you may be interested in is the targeting of foreign aid, which shows the share of official development assistance from each donor country going to the least developed countries or poorest countries.

The purpose of the Kyoto Protocol is to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases regardless of how these emissions are produced. Countries which intend to maintain or increase their current level of emissions of these gases are able to engage in emissions trading with countries whose emission levels are lower that their quota (such as Australia and Iceland.)

The protocol only sets firm limits on developed or "Annex 1" countries. All developing countries are exempt from the requirements until they gain Annex 1 status. China, for example, which is currently exempted from the requirements of the protocol, is expected to become an Annex I country within the next decade. At that time the exemption will be lifted.

The reasons that no limits are placed on developing nations are:

  • Pollution is strongly linked to industrial growth and restricting pollution may restrict economic growth in these countries.

  • To prevent developing nations from selling emissions credits to industrialised nations to permit those nations to over-pollute.

  • These countries receive money and technologies from some developed countries.

The exemption of developing nations from the requirements of the protocol is controversial and is the main reason that the United States has not ratified the Kyoto Protocol.

Shorty, you can see how much coal the United States consumed here, as well as its commecial energy use, electricity consumption, geothermal power use, hydroelectricity consumption, natural gas consumption, nuclear energy consumption, oil consumption and overall energy use per person.

To get a grasp on changes in consumption over time, check this data from 1965 on hydroelectricity consumption and nuclear energy consumption.

There are also graphs on geothermal power use per $ GDP and per capita, hydroelectricity consumption per capita now and in 1965, nuclear energy consumption per capita now and in 1965.

In a perfect world, we would have statistics from every nation showing the median salary of all workers, which would probably be the fairest way to compare, or at least average salaries for all workers in each country. But we don’t. So, while Luxembourg’s citizens may not be as well off as the country’s GDP per capita may lead you to believe, that is no reason to discount it altogether.

Luxembourg’s population is small, so of course it doesn’t have as high a total GDP as Vietnam, which has about 180 times as many people (but a total GDP less than 8.5 times higher).

Comparing GDP per capita may be an inaccurate measure of wealth, but most people would agree that, for the average worker, the standard of living is higher in Luxembourg than in Vietnam, Kenya or El Salvador.

Max (German), the division of continents is not based on the similarity of the peoples living there and their relative levels of development and civilization, but on geography. Europe is geologically and geographically a peninsula forming the western part of Eurasia. National Geographic considers Europe a continent, with boundaries formed by the Arctic Ocean in the north, the atlantic Ocean in the west, the Mediterranean and Balck seas to the south, and the Ural Mountains and Caspian Sea in the east. Given these boundaries, Kazakhstan is a part of the geographical Europe, though it may not be culturally a part of Europe.

Donovan, the graph showing the school life expectancy of various countries doesn’t tell the whole story about education, it only tells how long the citizens of that country attend schhol, on average. Other factors that may indicate the quality of a country’s education include class size, education spending, hours of instruction, public spending per student at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

A comparison of the relative quality of education in different countries could be made using mathematical, scientific, and reading literacy rates. It also helps to look at what percentage of teachers in a given country have special training, a university degree and the average number of years of teaching experience.

The top five countries for overall armed forces personnel are China, with 2.81 million, Russia with 1.52 million, the United States with 1.36 million, India, with 1.3 million, and South Korea, with 683,000. In terms of army personnel, the top five are India, North Korea, South Korea, Turkey and Pakistan. The United States has the largest air force, followed by India, North Korea, France and Germany. Americans also lead in the category of navy personnel, with over 380,000 sailors, with Brazil, Taiwan, Thailand and France rounding out the top five.

China has the most men aged 15 to 49 fit for military service, followed by India, Indonesia, Brazil and Japan. India has the most males reaching military age annually, with over 11 million. Close on India’s heels is China, while the other countries in the top five – Indonesia, the United States and Pakistan – have only about one-fifth as many, or less.

Anna on 2920 days 19 hours 3 minutes 24 seconds ago From domestic sources the information is that Sweden and Finland share first place as the countries with the total highest amount of suicide based on % of population. Seattle has the highest % of suicide in the United States. I wonder how to know which source is the correct one?

In response to Pteridude:

At first glance the United States appears to stand out as it has significantly more rapes than other countries. This is misleading however as the United States also has a significantly higher population.

To take the population into account click the per capita link at the top of this page. Under per capita ranking, the United States falls to number 9 and the rate is only one quarter of that of South Africa. which has the highest per capita rate.

on Health > Life expectancy at birth > total population 2920 days 21 hours 30 minutes 50 seconds ago
In response to Edgeworth:

Life expectency has increased dramatically over the last two centuries. These gains were mostly due to the eradication and control of infectious diseases, improvement in agriculture resulting in better nutrition and reduction in childhood and infant mortality. In all developed countries today, men have a lower life expectancy at birth than women by an average of 6 years.

The data reconstructed from the oldest records for England and Wales show that from the early
17th to the 20th century male and female life expectency differed little with discrepancies of less than two years (sometimes males had an advantage and sometimes females). Even today in the worlds least developed countries, the discrepancy is small.

The increase in female life expectancy is largely due to impoved maternal care resulting in lower levels of maternal mortality. Some countries (in particular those in the middle east) do have significantly more males over 65 years than females.
