In response to - Dip Azad - Issues of water and sanitation are among the most serious of current issues regarding the environment in Bangladesh. Water availability has become a major problem largely because of increasing groundwater withdrawals resulting in increasing salinity in water as well as arsenic in Bangladesh's groundwater. The government has started the Bangladesh Arsenic Mitigation Water Supply Project to address the problems of groundwater. |

In response to Amanda McIntosh - you may find some of the information in the 'Mortality' category of data-sets of use, including statistics on non-specified vehicular accidents, motorcyclist accidents, different types of accidents involving car occupants, with stationary objects, pedestrians, or non-specified transport accidents. There are also statistics for pedestrians injured in different types of transport accidents as well as mortality arising as a sequel to transport accidents. |

In response to Robyn 13 - After seeing a 4% growth in tourism in 2004 over 2003 and a 100% growth in the industry over the past decade, South Africa officially launched a Black Economic Empowerment Tourism Charter, under which it aims to have a third of the industry owned and operated by Black South Africans by 2014. Tourism is an important industry in South Africa, which ranks 22 in terms of tourist arrivals. |

In response to Roland.R.Harvey:
Today (24 May, 2005) 1 Tunisia Dinar = £ 0.4283
This value is the mid-market rate and will typically be the average value of the buying and selling rates. Buying rates are lower than selling rates in order for financial institutions to stay in business. You can access the current mid-market rate at the xe.com Universal Currency Converter web site.
Over the past five years, the Tunisia Dinar has decreased slightly in value against the Great Britain pound. Currency conversion rates are not static but will vary according to the flow of imports and exports, the flow of capital, relative inflation rates etc. In addition, limits are often placed on exchange rate fluctuations according to government policies. |

In response to Sial:
To find a complete list of counties and territories, click the countries link at the top of this page.
In response to Woods:
The date that each modern country gained its independence can be found on the independence page in the government category.
Countries as we know them are a relatively new concept, arising from the combination of city-states or the remnants of crumbling empires over the past 500 years. During the sixteenth century, there were approximately 1500 politically independent units in Europe, by 1900 there were only 20 countries. The list of countries we have today is still undergoing changes as regions such as East Timor become independent.
Some civilisations are considerably older than 500 years, most notably China which has 3500 continuous years of written history and China's civilization was old even then. Some regions of the world such as Egypt, Turkey and Peru have been continuously inhabited for thousands of years but have been governed by several different powers over this time. |

All people native to Saudi Arabia belong to one of the many sects of Islam. David - Laos is rich in timber, gypsum, tin, gold, gemstones. It has an unusually rich biodiversity and rich forest resources, which are being depleted because of commercial exploitation and hydro-electric projects. With its environment under threat, Laos is seeking to protect its 68 threatened species, including 30 mammals. Also see: http://www.country-studies.com/laos/natural-resources.htmlWilliamHayman - Viangchan (Vientaine) is the largest city in Laos in terms of population, followed by Savvanakhet. The Gross National Income of the Bahamas was $4.5 billion in 2000, while the GNI per capita was $15,236. Keep in mind, this does not mean that tha average worker’s salary is necessarily $15,000. If the richest group of people in a country earn a large proportion of the income, while virtually everyone else earns very little, the per capita GNI would likely be much greater than the average worker’s salary. |

Chiharu Eniwa, if you look at the urbanization or percentage living in urban areas graphs under the People category, you’ll see that 65 to 79 percent of Japanese people live in cities. Other graphs you might be interested in include the one which list the largest cities of over 100 countries, and the graph of the largest city population, in which Japan ranks first, and the largest city population per capita, to give you an idea of what percentage of Japanese people live in Tokyo. Related graphs include ones on population density, average size of households, households with more than five people, size of houses and persons per room. For a historical perspective, check out the graph on urbanization in 1975. For a look at what the future may hold, see urbanization in 2015. |
