Nevertheless, the Center for Disease Control in the USA reported that there had been more than 31,000 deaths from AIDS related causes during 1990, ranking AIDS as one of five leading causes of deaths that year. In response to -

Ebaylyn and Ecinaj, the latest year for which the Philippines Department of Health statistics for morbidity are available is for 1999. These show that the leading causes of morbidity are diarrheas, respiratory ailments and hypertension. The leading causes of mortality are heart and vascular diseases, respiratory ailments, cancer, TB and accidents.

Shiela and Ebaylyn, regarding the latest health statistics, the data on this page is in fact the latest available with either the Philippines health department, WHO or with other national and international agencies, even if some are for 1999! As explained, We always like to use the most up-to-date information. Often the statistic you see here is the latest you'll find anywhere. There may be nothing more recent available because: Countries don't conduct national censuses every year; The last study on the topic was conducted several years ago; The data has been collected, but not published yet; The data has been published, but not collated across a number of countries.

Tmot Sahagun, the Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality project of the University of the Philippines Population Institute, reported that the average age for the first sexual intercourse for both men and women is 18 years, 15.4% of women aged 15 to 24 engage in premarital sex, 23% of women ages 15 to 24 are sexually active, and that more than half of these said that their first sexual intercourse was either unplanned and/or unwanted, with 4% said they were forced to have sex. Also, 40% of sexually active women aged 15 to 19 did not use any contraceptive method during the first sexual intercourse.

According to a study by the Philippines Department of Health in 1999, 20% of Filipino women by age 19 are married and/or with children. The National Demographic Health Survey in 1998, found that 30% of married women are 15 to 24 years old and that Filipino women aged 15 to 19 have the lowest prevalence of contraceptive use, and that by age 19, 21% of them have given birth or are pregnant.
