In response to Pita:
This statistic gives only the primary national holiday for each country. This holiday typically relates to the formation of the nation as it is today by independence from a formerly governing power or the writing of the constitution on which the nation is now based.
Overseas territories such as Niue and St Pierre and Miquelon typically celebrate the same primary national holiday as the governing country.

Kristy, the name pound comes from the value of a Troy pound weight of high purity silver and is the name of the currency of several countries, including Cyprus, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, and the United Kingdom. The former currency of the Republic of Ireland, replaced by the Euro in 1999, was the Irish pound. The symbol for the pound, particularly the pound sterling in the United Kingdom, is a script capital L with a dash (-) or equal sign (=) through it. |

Queen Margot, Queen of France and Navarre, was born in 1553 and died in 1615. Her real name was Marguerite de Valois, and she was related to the famous author of the same name. She was the daughter of Henri II and Catherine de Medici. Three of her brothers – Francois II, Charles IX, and Henri III – became kings of France. She was wedded to Henri de Borbon (later Henri IV) in a marriage intended to create harmony between Catholics and Huguenots. In 1592, negotiations began to dissolve her marriage to Henri IV, which were finally concluded in 1599. She died in Paris on May 27, 1615, and is buried in the Chapel of the Valois. |

Koray Ilter, if you look at the encyclopedia entry for Turkey, you will see that Turkey is considered as a bridge between Europe and Asia, with about three percent of its territory located in southeastern Europe. The division between Europe and Asia runs from the Black Sea to the north down along the Bosporus strait through the Sea of Marmara and the Dardanelles strait to the Aegean Sea and the larger Mediterranean Sea to the south. However, it is correct to say that Turkey is European-focused in a political sense. Turkey has been a member of NATO since 1952 and now seeks admission to the European Union, with the official opening talks having been held on December 17, 2004. |

In response to Missys: The divorce rate in Spain is 0.6 for every 1,000 people which amounts to 10.9% of all marriages ending in divorce. This rate is significantly lower than that of most other Western European countries. Factors which influence the divorce rate in Spain include:- The legal process required in order to obtain a divorce. In Spain this process involves legal separation during which the case for separation must be presented before a judge, a waiting period of at least one year after legal separation has been granted, reconcilliation attempts must be made and grounds for divorce must also be established. These legal processes are currently under review.
- The Catholic Church. 94% of Spainiards are members of the Catholic church which opposes divorce.
- Social Attitudes. Since divorce in Spain was legalised in 1981 the divorce rate has increased, however the social stigma of divorce still affects many people.
- Marriage rate - The marriage rate in Spain has declined from seven marriages per 1000 population in 1981 to 4.9 per 1000 today. This rate is lower than most European countries. As fewer people are getting married (Many are opting for a single life or common-law marriage) fewer divorces will result.

Dorothy, the ethnic strife in Rwanda began when the land was partitioned between the Hutu and Tutsi population when Rwanda became independent in 1962. The current war started in 1990, when the Tutsi-dominated Rwandese Patriotic Front invaded Rwanda from its base in Uganda. The retaliation by Hutu militia is said to have resulted in the killing of over 900,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The International Tribunal for Rwanda under the UN was set up in 1994. |

Hi Leanne - Chile's main products are primary products - food groups and minerals, which is why primary products as a percentage of its exports is as much as 81%. Chile's main exports are copper, fish, fruits, paper and pulp, and it ranked 47th as an exporting country (in terms of f.o.b. value), exports accounting for 32% of its GDP in 2000 and close to 35% in 2001. Chile's labor force was a total of almost 6 million in 2000, equal to a little under 38% of the total population. The major occupation of its labor force is in services, with only 14% in agriculture and 27% in industry. This would imply that a large section of the labor force is well educated, a fact borne out by its relatively high ranking for average years of schooling, which stands at 7.5 years for the current adult population, and the 9 years of compulsory education mandated more recently. Enrolment for secondary education is also very high, as is overall literacy. Chile ranks 40th in enrolment for higher or tertiary education. Chile produces some unique pepper varieties. It is also famous for its wines. Chile ranks 3rd for the its quantity of marine fish catch. It has had some major successes in innovation of pepper and tobacco varieties. To encourage research in other areas of technological innovation, Chile has instituted a system known as the National System of Innovation, which is currently focused mainly on applied sciences. |
Ian Graham Staff Editor on Crime > Software piracy losses 2945 days 4 hours 11 minutes 42 seconds ago

Carlos, I suspect that the reason the software piracy losses are higher for the United States even though the software piracy rate is lower has to do with the higher prices that legitimately produced and sold CDs, DVDs, and software products command in the U.S. Many companies employ a differential pricing system in different regions of the world. This is intended to maximize sales by setting the price at a level appropriate to regional economies ($20 DVDs wouldn’t sell in a market with a per capita income of $50 a week) and, by doing so, reduce the savings realized from buying pirated goods. If the price difference between a legitimate product and a pirated product is small, people may be more likely to buy the legitimate one. If they do, sales of pirated products will drop. |

The United States Department of Justice released its latest official half-yearly figures on the penal system Sunday, revealing that the number of inmates in American prisons rose 2.3 percent over 2003. The prison and jail population in the U.S. was 2,131,180 in mid-2004. For every 100,000 people in the U.S., 726 are imprisoned, compared to figures of 142 per 100,000 for England, 91 for France, and 58 for Japan. Almost 13 percent of black males in their late 20s are in prison or jail, while for Hispanics the corresponding figure is 3.6 percent. Only 1.7 percent of white twentysomething males are incarcerated. While the violent crime rate in the U.S. dropped by one-third from 1994 to 2003, and the property crime rate by 23 percent, the prison population has increased by an annual average of 3.5 percent since 1995. Much of the increase is due to convicts reoffending; two out of every three prisoners released return to prison within three years. Since 1998, 12 states have had stable or declining rates of incarceration, though the crime rate in those states didn’t decline any faster than in the other 38 states. Texas is tops, with 704 per 100,000 people in state prisons, while Maine imprisons only 149. The number of female inmates increased by 2.9 percent from 2003 to 2004, and there are now over 100,000 women in U.S. prisons, compared to 12,000 in 1980. Another 238,000 prisoners have serious mental illnesses, and there are also 92,000 foreign prisoners in U.S. prisons. The average cost for one year of imprisonment for one person is US$22,000, and the U.S. spends about $57 billion per year on its correctional system. |
