on Crime > Rapes 2992 days 17 hours 4 minutes 17 seconds ago
In response to 'DudeReloaded' - The US Government Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (in 2002) reports that the military in Myanmar (Burma) is using rape as a weapon against civilian populations in the ethnic regions of the country. But, officially, crime is very low in Myanmar (Burma) and falling. Strictly monitored by a military government, the veracity of the reports are questionable. Reporting and monitoring of crime in democratic Thailand, on the other hand, is known to be effective.

In response to Susan Kaye and to BK - South America comprises 16 countries; your queries need to be more specific.

And BK, there are several inhabited islands in the Caribbean and, while this query also should ideally be more specific, the islands have some common features and history. The name 'Caribbean' comes from the Carib people of the Lesser Antilles islands. An interesting fact is that some common words in use in English were borrowed from the Carib language, such as "hammock," "iguana," "hurricane" (after the Carib god of evil), and "maize."

Hi Sona, about 10% of the people in France are Islamic. But, as explained, we only report on countries, not smaller administrative regions.

Small amounts of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, slowed the hardening of arteries in mice, according to a study in the latest issue of the journal Nature.

The mice in the study were fed a high-cholesterol diet for 11 weeks. Halfway through that period, some of the mice started receiving very small daily doses of THC. The mice that got THC had less blood vessel clogging than those that didn't.

The benefit came from THC’s effect on immune system cells. It reduced their secretion of an inflammation-promoting substance by binding to proteins called CB2 receptors, which are found mostly on immune-system cells. Related work showed that there was no additional benefit from receiving higher THC doses, like those a person would get from smoking marijuana.

In humans, hardening of the arteries and their inflammation sets the stage for heart attacks.

In response to Keisha - The Loma Prieta earthquake occurred on October 17, 1989 in the greater San Francisco Bay Area in California and measured 7.1 on the Richter scale. One of the most studied earthquakes in history, a 1990 report of the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska said that while geophysicists were quite certain that the section along the San Andreas fault would see a major seismic even within the next 30 years, they were surprised when the 1989 earthquake occurred. There was no warning that anything as dramatic as the 7.1 quake was about to happen, and even the hi-tech instruments failed to record any warnings.

The U.S. Geological Survey began forecasting aftershocks following the Loma Prieta earthquake. Earthquake preparedness is at many levels - large-scale, long-term policy for seismic retrofitting, policy for emergency preparedness and household preparedness. A Mediterranean diet prolongs life, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal.

Researchers studied the diet of more than 75,000 Europeans 60 and older in nine countries - Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Britain. Those who ate plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, fish and olive oil showed a longer life expectancy. The link was most pronounced in Greece and Spain, countries that follow a true Mediterranean diet.

Precisely how long a Mediterranean diet extends lifespan depends on a person's age. A 60-year-old man who sticks to the diet can expect to live a year longer that someone of a similar age eating differently, according to researchers, while younger people could expect a bigger benefit.

The Mediterranean diet is rich in antioxidants that neutralize cell damage from free radicals and are thought to help fight cancer and heart disease.

A study by Lima’s San Marcos University says that 40 percent of the bus and taxi drivers it surveyed had psychological problems and displayed psychopathic tendencies like anxious, aggressive and antisocial behavior.

Hundreds of people a year are killed in bus and taxi crashes in Peru due to poorly maintained roads and vehicles and driver recklessness. At least 85 people died in such crashes in the last three months of 2004, according to police figures.

Lima, the capital city of Peru, is packed with old, pollution-spewing taxis and buses, and many of their drivers do not obey traffic rules or even stop lights.

on Energy > Gasoline prices 2993 days 1 hour 29 minutes 13 seconds ago
The annual springtime increase of U.S. gasoline prices could lead to a national average price of $2.50 per gallon, which could make a full tank for an SUV cost $65 or more. California, where gas prices are usually highest, could be averaging almost $3 a gallon by June.

GasPriceWatch.com says the national average for unleaded gas is $2.30 a gallon, 40 or 50 cents higher than last year. California gas prices are averaging $2.50 per gallon, compared to $2.10 in April 2004. By summer, Americans could be spending $5 billion more per month on gasoline than they did last year.

A Goldman Sachs analysis of how high prices would have to go to spur changes in American driving behavior predicted that oil could reach $135 a barrel by 2008, which would lead to average gas prices of about $4.30. That price is considered high enough to substantially reduce gasoline consumption.

In response to the anonymous comment Where is China?

In this statistic, China's rank is 79th with a military expenditure of S43.44 per person. You can view this information by clicking on the view all countries link.

As the population of China is very large, per capita statistics for China are typically small. In terms of Total military expenditure, China is second only to the United States.

China's armed forces are formidable in sheer numbers with 2,810,000 personnel. In total, China has 206 million men of military age who are fit for military service. No other country even comes close to these numbers. By comparison, India (which is closest to China in population) has only 1,303,000 armed forces personnel and 169 million men of military age who are fit for military service.

In response to Rayo:

Military expenditure is one method used to determine military resourcing. Limitations of this method include variations in the strength of each currency and variations in price. Comparing military spending with GDP can be an indicator of the importance of the military according to government policy makers.

To compare priorities for government spending, comparison should be made with spending in other areas such as health, education and social security.

To gain a better overview of military resourcing, other indicators such as the number of military personnel (army, navyand air force.) and expenditure per GDP should also be consulted.
