In response to Abigail:

In order to remain alive, humans need adequate (and not excessive) food, water, oxygen and shelter. Environmental factors which interfere with one or more of these survival needs will increase human mortality. These factors include:

  • Extremes in weather conditions such as heat or cold.

  • Air pollution such as sulfur and nitrogen oxides.

  • Abundance and quality of food and water.

  • Micro organisms.

  • Radioactivity

Oxygen levels are lower at high altitude, but a person can be in a low oxygen environment if the air flow is limited or absent (eg in a collapsed mine shaft) or the oxygen is being consumed faster than it can be replaced (eg in a burning building.)

In response to Tosin - the average years of schooling for adults in Liberia is very low, at just 2.5 years. Total school life expectancy is just a little over 9 years and is much lower for women than for men. A significant part of the foreign aid Liberia receives is spent on adult education programs.

Hi Helen, as explained, we only report on countries, not smaller administrative regions. But you could compare the data for all crimes in Greece and the United Kingdom and also look at the different data-sets under the category for Crime for more detailed comparisons.

For women, Australia may be one of the most progressive countries in the world, in terms of educational options and earning potential.

Australia is fourth in gender income ratio, with a rate of 0.69 percent, has one of the lowest differentials of male to female earnings (14 percent), and the second–highest expected duration of education for women (20.1 years).

In addition, Australia boasts practically universal female literacy, one of the longest school life expectancies for women, and the tenth-highest percentage of university degrees awarded to women, including the 12th-highest percentage of advanced research-degrees awarded to women.

In response to shahid:

The country with the highest reported total per capita crime rate is Dominica followed by New Zealand and Finland. For further information on total crimes or particular types of crime such as murder, drug offences, assault or car theft see the crime category.

In order to achieve a fair comparison, all crime statistics should be viewed per capita. It should also be noted that crime statistics only include reported crime. Crime is more likely to be reported when people feel that they can report crime to the police and have confidence in the police and the legal system.

Yahoo! on Cyprus Profile 2974 days 13 hours 30 minutes 44 seconds ago Cyprus is an island country in the eastern Mediterranean Sea south of Turkey. Site of an ancient Neolithic culture, the island was settled by Phoenicians c. 800 B.C. and thereafter fell successively to the Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Macedonian Greeks, Egyptians again, and finally Romans (58 B.C.). The Byzantines controlled it from A.D. 395 until 1191, when it was captured by Richard I of England during the Third Crusade. Venice annexed it in 1489, Turkey conquered it in 1571, and Great Britain proclaimed its sovereignty in 1914. Cyprus became independent in 1960, but large-scale fighting between Greek and Turkish Cypriots led to the installment of a UN peacekeeping force in 1965. In 1974 Turkey invaded Cyprus and established a separate Turkish state in the northern part. Nicosia is the capital and the largest city. Population: 734,000.

In response to the query about Taiwan's Olympics gold medals, the table on this page is for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where Taiwan did not win any gold medals. Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) won its first gold medals at the 2004 Olympics meet at Athens; the medals were for Taekwondo.

Hi Linda, the term goes back to the 'The Reign of Terror' during the French Revolution. More references to 'terrorism' or other radical activity during the times of the Greeks, the use of the expression by the League of Nations in 1937, and other instances, past and present, may be found in the references listed under 'terrorism' at Factbites.com.
