Cuba is the largest medicine exporter in Latin America, with more than 50 client nations. The main markets for Cuba’s medicines are former Soviet states and third world countries. Cuban medicines are popular because they are cheaper than those produced in developed countries, though some cannot be sold in countries that respect patent laws.

In 1994, Cuba exported $110 million worth of medical supplies. In 1995, this figure rose to $125 million.

Cuban biotechnology researchers have been granted more than 100 patents, include 26 in the United States. In October 1999 SmithKline Beecham, announced details of an agreement to test and market a Cuban meningitis vaccine, first in Europe and eventually in the U.S. Cuban biotechnology research is responsible for drugs such as recombinant streptokinase, a "clot-buster" for heart attack victims produced at a fraction of the cost of similar medicines in developed countries.

The tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan measures its economic development and growth not with the conventional measure of GDP, but with the holistic, multidimensional measure of Gross National Happiness (GNH), which is measured according based on economic self-reliance, environmental preservation, cultural promotion and good governance. The government’s goal is to balance economic progress with the spiritual and emotional well-being of the people.

Bhutan is known for shunning conventional development and going its own way. The first foreign tourists didn’t come to the country until 1974, and the government allows only 9,000 to enter per year, each of whom pay fees of $200 per day. Television and the Internet arrived only in 1999. Most recently, the Government of Bhutan made it illegal to sell tobacco or smoke in public, becoming the first officially non-smoking nation.

on Government > Independence 2989 days 14 hours 45 minutes 35 seconds ago
The nation-states as represented by the lines on a political map have developed over the past 500 years. Prior to the appearance of nation-states, cities were the local centres for politics and economics. During the sixteenth century, there were approximately 1500 politically independent units in Europe, by 1900 there were only 20 nation-states. Nations were formed on the basis of ethnicity, a common government and a spatially bounded territory.

The world outside of Europe had largely been incorporated into empires of the major colonial powers (Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom. The process of decolonisation of these empires formed the nations outside of Europe. The first phase of decolonisation began in 1776 with the American war of independence. After World War II the second wave of nation building took place in Africa, South and South-East Asia and Islands in the Pacific, Carribean and Indian Oceans. Nations continued to be formed in the 1990's with the breakup of the Soviet Union and the formation of the Czech republic, Slovakia and the division of Yugoslavia. Nations will continue to be formed as factions secede from existing countries.

Hi Vanni, according to WHO reports, less than 0 percent of all adults smoke manufactured tobacco products in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Lichtenstein, Macedonia, Monaco, Moldova, San Marino and the Vatican City. The nation formerly called Yugoslavia is now broken along ethnic lines into: Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Serbia and Montenegro. The WHO reports that more than 25% adults smoke in Slovenia.

Hi Samir, the latest UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) report on Afghanistan, released in November 2004, has no specific focus on the rate of murders committed in the country. The country's recent history does not make it easy to collect reliable data on crime, but some figures are available at: http://www.nationmaster.com/country/af/Crime.

on Crime > Total crimes 2990 days 3 hours 44 minutes 9 seconds ago
At first glance, the United States appears to stand out in this statistic, having four times as many crimes as Germany which is next on the list. However this is misleading as the population of the United States is about four times as high as the population of Germany. As a country with a high population is likely to have more crime (there are more people to commit crimes), this statistic should br viewed per capita. In per capita ranking, the United States falls to number 8, between the United Kingdom (No. 6)and Germany(No. 12).

Willingness to report crime and confidence in the police and legal system influence the rate of reported crime. Over half of U.S citizens feel that they can report crime to the police, and 73% have confidence in the police and the legal system. In addition to this, the United States has the highest ranking for belief in police efficiency with 89% of respondents stating that the police do a good job in controlling crime in their area.

In response to Ferngariby:

Emissions from the burning of fossil fuels contribute to acid rain, global warming and poor air quality. In turn, these are responsible for environmental damage and human health problems including aggravation of asthma, emphysema, bronchitis and existing heart disease and reducing the immune system response to inhaled micro organisms.

As a result of these concerns in December 1997 the Kyoto Protocol, which set limits for the emission of greenhouse gases was negotiated. In February 2005, 141 countries including the People's Republic of China had ratified the agreement. The United States has not ratified the protocol due to concern over some details, in particular that most provisions of the Kyoto protocol apply only to developed countries.

on Energy > Gasoline prices 2990 days 5 hours 42 minutes 15 seconds ago
In response to Jackie:

The cost of filling the tank depends on the fuel tank capacity and the cost of gasoline. Fuel tank capacities vary with different makes and models of vehicle, but 20 gallons (75 L) is standard for many SUV models.

As the data above indicates, pump prices vary considerably around the world. To calculate the price in your country, multiply the value given above by 75 (fuel tank capacity).

eg. If you are in the U.S, a full tank will cost 75 * 0.77 = $US 57.75

Robert Mugabe has been Zimbabwe’s head of state since 1987. He is the head of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANUPF). Opposition parties exist but none have seriously challenged the ruling party.

In 1963, the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) formed, with Robert Mugabe as secretary; a year later, it was declared illegal and Mugabe was imprisoned. Following his release from prison in 1974, Mugabe helped form the Patriotic Front to fight Ian Smith’s regime in a civil war.

Mugabe became prime minister in 1980 when Zimbabwe gained independence from Britain. In 1987, Mugabe combined the posts of head of state and prime minister as executive president. He won elections in 1996, 2000, and in 2002. The 2002 campaign featured alleged ballot rigging and intimidation of opponents of the ruling ZANUPF regime. Zimbabwe withdrew from the Commonwealth in 2003.
