When comparing religious statistics, the following factors should be considered:
- In some countries, religions follow ethnic groups.
- In countries where religious freedom is limited, minority religions may not be recognised.
- In countries which have a national religion, the number of actual practicing adherents may be less than the proportion indicated by this statistic.
- In some countries there are financial or social benefits and detriments connected with adherence to certain religions.
For further information on some of the countries where these considerations apply see

Hi Patricia, the same as "from the frying pan into the fire" -- from a "hot" or difficult situation into an even more destructive one. |

In response to Hwamlikan: North African countries share many features with the Middle East such as religion, language and some cultural factors. From a strictly geographical viewpoint, however these nations are located in the African continent. To compare African countries and those in the Middle East, select both these categories from the 'Make your own graph:' selection criteria at the top of the page. |
Edria Murray Staff editor on Health > Births by caesarean section 2993 days 16 hours 16 minutes 14 seconds ago

By the early 1980s, cesarean deliveries in industrialized nations had increased to almost five times the frequency of 1970.The most common reasons for an unplanned cesarean section are:
- A slow difficult labor
- Fetal or maternal distress
- Placenta problems
- Cephalopelvic disproportion (A baby with a large head and the mother with a narrow pelvis)
Some cesarean sections are planned ahead of time. Reasons for this include:
- A baby in any position that is not head-down
- Maternal infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
- A narrow pelvis and a large baby
- A placenta that is blocking the cervix
- A mother's chronic illness
- Factors linked to a past cesarean delivery
In developing nations, the rate of cesareans is very low as many births are not attended by a medical professional. These countries typically have a higher rate of maternal mortality. Many nations in Sub-Saharan Africa also have a high proportion of reproductive-age women who are living with HIV. The transmission rate of HIV from mother to baby can be reduced by cesarean delivery. |

This graph does not show the number of assaults in a given country, nor does the rape chart show the number of rapes in a given country. They show how many assaults and rapes were reported to police. So, even though Canada is sixth on the list of assaults, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it had more assaults than the countries below it. Four of the top 10 countries - U.S.A., U.K., Canada and Australia - for reported assaults are also in the top 10 for belief in police efficiency. People in these countries are more likely to report being victims of crimes. Still, according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics National Crime Victimization Survey, Americans report only 49 percent of violent crimes and 40 percent of property crimes. This is despite the fact that 89 percent of them say police do a good job in controlling crime in their area. |
Ian Graham Staff Editor on Economy > Inflation rate (consumer prices) 2994 days 5 hours 54 minutes 37 seconds ago

Hyperinflation is when prices rise so rapidly that currency loses its value. It often occurs during times of war or internal strife. The problem usually becomes worse when governments respond by printing more money. On his website, Thayer Watkins of San Jose State University gives the maximum monthly price increases during some of history’s worst hyperinflation crises. These include Hungary in 1945-1946, when prices rose 4.19 quintillion percent; Greece in 1943-1944, when inflation was 8.55 billion percent; and Germany in 1920-1923, with monthly price increases of up to 3.25 million percent. In 1993, the Serbian government printed a 500 billion Serbian dinar bill. The largest denomination banknote ever officially issued for circulation was in 1946 by the Hungarian National Bank for the amount of 100 million billion pengő. Sometimes bills were just stamped to indicate denomination changes because new bills would be obsolete by the time they were printed. http://www.answers.com/topic/hyperinflation |

Tourism continues expanding year-to-year, according to World Tourist Organization numbers. In 2002, international tourist arrivals topped 700 million for the first time, and increased by about 16 million from 2001. Worldwide earnings from international tourism in 2002 were US$474 billion, or US$1.3 billion per day. That’s US$675 per tourist. The United States earned US$67 billion followed by Spain, France and Italy, which earned from US$27 billion to US$34 billion. Per-tourist spending is almost US$1,000 in the Americas, US$720 in Asia-Pacific, US$600 in Europe, and US$470 in the Middle East. The top 10 spenders on tourism are the U.S., Germany, U.K., Japan, France, Italy, China, Netherlands, Hong Kong and the Russian Federation. The World Tourist Organization estimates international tourist arrivals will reach 1.56 billion by 2020, and that the top three destination regions will be Europe (717 million), East Asia and the Pacific (397 million) and the Americas (282 million). |

Hi Vic, at current estimates, Canada has the 11th largest natural gas reserves in the world, and is a major exporter of natural gas. Its oil reserves were put at 4.7 billion barrels in 2001, but it has recently been estimated that tar or oil sands can be economically tapped to produce oil, which would possibly require a significant revision of estimates of Canada's oil reserves; it is being speculated that while tapping the sands would yield more costly oil, it would also place Canada among the top three countries with substantial oil reserves. |
