Of the 225 countries in the world, 65 are predominantly Roman Catholic, 50 are predominantly Muslim (11 of which are Sunni Muslim), 10 are mostly Buddhist and four are mainly Hindu. More than half the countries of the world have a majority who identify themselves as members of a Christian sect. However, in some countries many or most of these are non-practicing Christians. No country has a majority of people identified as having no religion, even though non-religious people account for close to a billion people worldwide. According to the website Religious Tolerance.org , the five largest religions in the world are: Christianity, with 2.015 billion adherents; Islam, with 1.215 billion; no religion, with 925 million; Hinduism, with 786 million; and Buddhism, with 362 million. Combined, these five religious groups account for 87 percent of the world’s population. |

Infant mortality has many many causes. The three most common are:
- Congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities. These account for 20 percent of cases
- Disorders related to short gestation and low birth weight alone account for 16 percent of cases
- SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) which accounts for 8
percent. All of these occur more often when maternal health and nutrition are poor. In many cases, causes are multiple with low birth weight being a major factor. Infant mortality is highest in developing nations. These countries generally have a low
href=/graph/eco_gdp>GDP, low literacy,
high levels of poverty, a high rate of maternal mortality and a high number of children per woman. |

The divorce rate per 1000 people doesn’t tell the whole story about the prevalence of divorce in a country. Countries with more marriages will usually also have higher numbers of divorced people. To get an idea of how many marriages end in divorce, take a look at the number of divorces per 100 marriages, where Belgium tops the list at 59.8 divorces for every 100 marriages. Only six countries are in the top 20 of both divorces per 1000 people and divorces per 100 marriages. The United States and Russia are first and third, respectively, for divorce rates per 1000 people. But they are first and second in the number or marriages per 1000 people per year, and don’t appear in the top 20 of divorces per 1000 marriages. |

Hi Liz, the data here is only for class size by 13-year-olds, a parameter for data that few countries maintain. If you see the data for government spending on education and the pupil-teacher ratios at the primary and secondary levels, you'll find Cuba performs extremely well. |

Hi Henry, you're right. Our mistake! According to the EIA, Venezuela has proven oil reserves of about 78 billion barrels, which would place it just behind Iran on this list. It is one the top suppliers of U.S. oil imports. However, widespread political unrest in recent years has impacted production severely. |

Hi, I'm afraid we don't maintain figures of professionals by religion. While, all of us undoubtedly bring the influences of our individual cultural heritage to bear on our lives, personal and professional, and religion has a strong bearing on culture, the profile of professionals cannot possibly take into account all the various cultural-religious parameters to quality. |

Low birthweight is defined as a birth weight of less than 2500g. These infants may suffer from infections, weakened immunity, learning disabilities, impaired physical development and, in severe cases, die not long after birth. Low birthweight is a factor in over two thirds of
href=/graph/hea_inf_mor_rat&int=-1>infant mortality cases.In developed nations, the most common causes of low birthweight are genetic factors, prematurity, multiple birth, high maternal age (over 35 years) and
href=/graph/hea_tob_tot_adu_smo>smoking during pregnancy.Although this statistic focuses primarily on developed nations, the majority of low birthweight babies are born in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. In these regions, the main factors are poor maternal health, a high number of children per woman, closely spaced children, low maternal age (under 16 years), inadequate rest and infection. |

Hi Richard, the section on charitable trusts presents info on countries with the most organized and active charities, but stats on per capita donations to charities across all countries are not available. Also see info on membership in voluntary charitable organizations, which is an indication of charitable giving as is the data on the funds pledged by different countries to the tsunami victims. |
