THE PRESIDENT OF THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO IS NOT DENIS SASSOU-NGUESSO BUT JOSEPH KABILA.

Whether the Congo is a dictatorship or not depends on your view of the most recent elections.

According to the CIA World Factbook, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s current president - Denis Sassou-Nguesso - was elected with 89.4 percent of the popular vote on March 10, 2002.

The country has 66 senators and 137 members of the National Assembly. The most recent Senate elections, on July 11, 2002, saw Democratic and Patriotic Forces or FDP party candidates win 56 of the seats. The FDP also has 83 of the seats in the National Assembly. The president of the FDP is also Denis Sassou-Nguesso.

If you believe the elections were free and fair, the Congo is a country in which most of the population feel the FDP is the best of the political parties. If you don’t believe the elections were fair, you may see it is a dictatorship backed up by sham elections.
