As an Aussie I don't find these stats that unsuprising. Car thefts and break-and-enterse are rife (#1 per capita for both) and convicted criminals don't get put in jail (#74 prisoners per capita) but for anyone who lives in the country that is nothing new. Everyone in the community has been going on for years about magistrates and judges "going soft" on criminals, redirecting them from correctional facilities to programs which just see them back on the street stealing more cars and breaking into more houses. It is interesting but not suprising to see actual numbers.

Crime stats in Australia are appalling. This proves our government is weak in making a criminal pay the price, instead it's the victim. A government which removes guns from honest people and allows criminals to get away with crime is a government that does'nt trust it's people and may later plan something sinister against them. Look back hundreds of years ago(as we are under British law) and peasants were not permitted weapons and were heavily taxed by the kings and queens. I support firearms and if it means breaking the law to protect yourself/family/property then so be it.

It is a very sad thing to know that in the last few years there have been so many crimes that there are so many of our loved ones that are dieing...
I have never thought that there would be so many crimes that over the last few years there have been 23,677,800 crimes in America and 427,230 crimes here in New Zealand...
This is just devastating to know that some may have even been your loved ones...
I have never stoped feeling sorry for those families who have lost there loved ones because a few of those who died were my best friends cousins...
I just wished in some way they could really stop...

I was interested to see that the reference to Tasmania's licit trade in opiats was linked to Wikipedia's article on gun homicide, which made no mention of Tasmania's cocaine and amphetamine use. That Tasmania (an small Australian state) is a "major consumer of cocaine and amphetamines", seems like a very strong statement considering that it's population is less than 510,000.
Please add a reference that shows how, in relation to other states or countries, that Tasmania is a "major consumer", and what are the percentages of it's consumption. Is this statement necessary otherwise?
