Us Best Country? I think not, Recession is already in full swing, Banks allowing too much money for those with small earnings, Banks then recall mortgages, people cant pay the interest on those mortgages, automotive sector hit hard, transportation hit hard, parts supplies hit hard, dollar goes into a tail spin, us dollar has no buying power, import/exports at an all time low, government is bankrupt in the trillions! Best Country.

to nevassimilate: can you describe for us an immigrant friendly country?
and the biggest reason most people think Canada is not immigrant friendly is because recently, people of the Hindu religion have asked for a Canadian national anthem in Hindu, and this is by all means a reasonable request, it will never happen the anthem was composed in English, and translated into French, and Hindu people are told that is the way it will always be, they take offense to this and start accusing Canadians of being racist because we refuse to listen to a demand that has never been a problem with immigrants of any other race (ex. Chinese, Latino, African, etc.). So in short if you live in Canada love it or leave it. |

I am absolutely shocked that this website would have "Canada & Newfoundland" listed as an "Alternative Name" for Canada. I would have you know that Newfoundland is most certainly a part of this great nation of Canada. It is beyond me why anyone would exclude Newfoundland from this category. Even in jest it is an insult to all Newfoundlanders. Newfoundland has earned its right to be part of this nation and continues to be a vital part of it.
It is rich with natural resources and more importantly, it is the home of some of the most proud Canadians in the nation.
Geaoraphically, it is on its own in the Atlantic (for those of you who would have to consult a map to know where it is). However, they joined Confederation in 1949 and since then have given its all to be included in this nation. |

Tyson,
We're related. My Gr Gr Grandpa was Joseph H. Goulet and changed the last name to Goulait, which is the correct spelling of the name as it was in France. We came from Montreal to The Red River Settlement in Manitoba. Yup, I'm a Metis. Canada has always felt that the Metis People should not be. If you read the Half Breed Manifesto, you will understand (?) how the Brits felt about not only the Metis people but also the French that came to Canada in the 1600's. It was the Brits that named you Goulet and took away the Goulait name. Great people huh? Well, things have come along way since the 1800's but more has to be done to protect the very interesting traditions of the Metis People and the Metis People themselves. Lots of them left in the 1800's. They left to not only save their lives but also to give their children a better way and a better chance to succeed in life. I thank Gramps everyday for that. Manitoba is a wonderful place today. I'm very happy for that the Goulet's that stayed in Manitoba were true rebels that made Manitoba what it is today. God has truly been good to the Goulet's and has been good to my homeland of Manitoba.
Trade policies in Canada is similar to ours in the US. We work side by side with Canada. The Europe people think different about us. Metis, the mixed blood. Europe, China, and others like to deal with pure blood including France. Trade with other country's will never give us what we're worth. Read the Half Breed Manifesto, and you'll find that some things never change.

Canada is by no means an immigrant friendly country. There exists considerable institutionalized and societal racism and bigotry toward immigrants. Immigrants are marginalized through systemic racism and economic oppression. Due to behavior of historic dominant groups, legalized "caste" systems prevail in housing and labor. The upper stratum of society control distribution of power and wealth, and media. There is widespread child and family poverty, lack of affordable housing and homelessness, job layoffs and under-employment. I challenge any "Canadian-American" resident to dispute this reality. |

M buss wrote "Gun controls are thought to play a big part in the lower murder rate."
M buss, imagine a society in which people with criminal tendencies own more guns than people who tend to abide by the law. Seems like there would be higher rates of crime than in a society where the reverse is true. Some people argue that this is often what happens when gun control laws take effect. Law abiding people abide by a gun ban and criminals do not - for example, the handgun ban in Washington DC has resulted in law abiding people not owning guns, and criminals owning lots of handguns. And the rate of violent crime is the highest in the the United States. |
Rudolph 19th October 2005 |
Dave wrote: "Why are there less murders in Canada than the USA? Each country has gun laws and each country has the same amount of guns per family or person."
There are different reasons for the differences in violence crime, but I'd point out that high rates of violence correlate very well with the number of young black males in a society. That's the biggest reason why Canada does
not have the violence that the US has. Consider the
exception that proves the rule: Winnipeg. It has
always been a tough town, but it's only recently
that black gangs have moved in, and now it is a
dangerous place to live. There are other factors that
we can debate and that have an effect on violence, but
race always seems to stand out as the single biggest
comparative factor. I really think that it doesn't
make sense to ignore the racial aspect of violence in
the hopes of not offending people, otherwise we will
never figure out how to solve the problem. The first
thing to do when you want to solve a problem is talk
about it openly. |
Sohail 19th October 2005 |
I want to know the population of Indians in Canada |
Rudolph 19th October 2005 |
The reason why Canada has low rates of gun crime compared to the United States is because their black population is so much lower than ours. To find the exception that proves the rule, look at Winnipeg. Black gang violence moved in and have become a huge problem there. Winnipeg's murder rate is the highest of any city in Canada. High rates of violent behavior are very often found where young black males are found. It's that easy. I'm not sure what the solution is. Population density and other factors may be a factor, but there are extremely dense urban population centers in Asia - and Asians living in the West - and they don't have rates of violence anywhere near as high as blacks. It doesn't make sense to ignore the reality of high black violence rates, because you will not otherwise be able to help them or understand the source of the problem. |

The government of Canada website has many links to trade information categorized by industry. They also have a lot of information on the major trading partners that we deal with.
For information on countries you can also look at the CIA world fact book. They give general information on every country in the world. It's a good place to start research.
I hope this helps.

To Samantha and KyleG - Actually, I have to correct a few things. All legislation in the Dominion of Canada, federally and provincially, is passed officially by HM the Queen of Canada, Elizabeth II. Canada’s Sovereign("head of state") is one of the best known and respected individuals in the world. Carrying out many of her responsibilities on a day-to-day basis are the Governor General (for the nation), whom The Queen appoints on the nomination of the Prime Minister, and the Lieutenant Governors (one for each province). Each is head of the formal executive of Canada or of a province. In Canada there are actually 11 Crowns - usually referred to as "The Crown in right of Canada" and "The Crown in right of (name of Province)." The Queen is the embodiment of Canada or in other words she is Canada. A good read of our Constitution would explain further.
On the question of Canada's independence. Though they say 1867 is when Canada became independent, I think that the Statute of Westminster 1931(11 Dec) should be the appropriate date for when we achieved independence, which many agree. Even 1982 would make more sense. The statute was created to give equal status to the self-governing dominions of the British Empire - Canada, Australia, NZ, Irish Free State, SA and Newfoundland. Today the Statute of Westminster is relevant for outlining the powers which Commonwealth Realms (16 countries where the Queen is Sovereign) hold over any changes to the structure of the Monarchy. Which is a good example of how equal the Dominions became after the Statute was ratified in each country. The realms themselves hold considerable veto power over any legislation over the throne. In theory, since the Monarchy is no longer exclusively a British institution, rules altering its operation must be collectively ratified by all nations who live under it if they are to have effect in all the realms. If a rule change were not ratified by one of the realms, the old rule would still apply to that realm.
So as you can see, although Canada had it's own parliament and Prime Minister etc. in 1867 it really still was being minded by London in some form or another until 1931 and still yet, Westiminster held power over any changes to our Constitution until 1982. To me Canada was officially a country on 11 Dec 1931. |
KyleG 3rd July 2005 |
In response to Donald Stewart's question:
War Plan Red (declassified in 1974 - so it's not really news) was not so much a practical military plan, but a theoretical excercise aimed more at the UK than Canada. It was a contingency plan in case of war with the UK, and included plans to counter a possible British invasion of the Pacific Coast, via Australia and New Zealand, as well as preparing to sacrifice Samoa, Guam and the Philippines, should the British capture them early in the theoretical war. Later on, with naval buildup, it would be possible to capture Bermuda Britain's Caribbean possessions. As far as Canada was concerned, the plan was that in case of war with the UK, American forces would seize Halifax, to prevent British resupply, disrupt East-West communications by capturing Winnipeg, capture Canada's industrial heart, by establishing bridgheads at Buffalo, Detroit and Sault-Sainte-Marie, and then capture Quebec by overland force from New England. It wasn't an actual attempt to invade (since the contingency plan was never requested by the US government), it was an example of the neverending need of staff officers to be able to fight any war that may arise. Other theoretically-posed wars included war with a coalition of France, Britain and Canada, while another was aimed at a possible Anglo-Japanese alliance. Of course, none of them came to fruition, so the plans were shelved, and duly declassified in time, but it gives you a glimpse into the mind of flag officers and how they see the world. |
KyleG 3rd July 2005 |
In response to Samantha, to make a complicated topic simple, Canada's independance was established by the passage of the British North America Act on 1st July 1867. Unlike the US, Canada's independance has been a progressive affair. British soldiers were still the primary defence force in Canada until 1874, and until 1982, all legislation in Canada still had to be approved directly by the Queen before it was passed. Though this power was transferred to the Governor-General, the Sovereign still has the right to intervene. But officially, 1867 was when Canada became a nation. |
m buss 29th June 2005 |
To Dave, about murder and want:
You should note that Canadian gun laws are very different from American gun laws. Raw ownership per capita may be the same (*maybe*), but this statistic masks the numerous restrictions in Canada which are meant to keep fire arms out of every-day life. You can look in to how this is done, if you like.
Gun controls are thought to play a big part in the lower murder rate. The occassional presence of a slightly more forgiving social safety net may also help; other population statistics, such as urban density, may also be argued over. However, broader thinking will lead to the conclusion that these aspects are just expressions of a cultural difference. Canadians can be every bit as petty, consumeristic, covetous, and greedy as any American population, but they are not quite so murderous. You can put it down to history. |

Why are there less murders in Canada than the USA? Each country has gun laws and each country has the same amount of guns per family or person. In a recent documentary it was stated that the Prime Time news media in the US contribute a Percent to these murders and the other reason being that children in America are taught through media and ads and others that they should want more. MOre of anything. More gold, better car, more clothes etc. But, the ideal is corupted by those that seek the easiest methods to obtain more. Drug sales, thefts, leading to murders. I have seen the stats that murders are 33% commited by family, 23% unknown and the remainder during fights or thefts. WHY? WHY is it that Canada has the same people mix and same everything and their murder rate is less than half of the US??
