I came to this website because I'm doing homework on China's anti-natalist policy.
I know that because of the one child policy, parents are trying only to get boys (to carry on the family name or whatever) but wouldn't this affect the population pyramid in the future, say 2050? I would have thought that by that time there would be much fewer females. But it appears not. Maybe I'm just confuzzled.

Agree with Erik and Chris.
The 80+ category is cumulative, it means it includes not only the age 80 to 84 as is the rule in other age groups but ANY age more than 80.
Considering the strong population groups of the year 2020, where there are about 230 million women older than 50 /sum of all age groups starting with 50-54 and ending 80+/, the prediction for 2050 looks OK since those 230 million women from 2020 would shrink to modest less than 70 million in 2050. That is quite conservative suggestion, is it not?

Wow, in 2050 the Chinese will have found a way for women to be born at age 80!

If it is 80+ then it includes the women that 50 yr olds previously, as well as the 60 and 70 yr olds who also have not died.

Women are immigrating to China to live out their golden years?

I see Anthony's point . . . if you start out with a certain number of 50 year olds, how can there be such a large increase in the number of 80 year olds 30 years later?

If these are really from U.S. CB they should all be fired. they cannot have more 80 yo females in 2050 than they had 40 yo females in 2010.

Has China's health-care skyrocketed to preserve all those women in their elderly age? The 2050 pyramid seems off...

what do the different colors mean? 2050: so many women- not possible because of the 1 child policy and gender based abortions?
