Nice page! tons of info about everywhere. Of course, this kind of pages grow with contributions.
Just some details, Santiago (chile's capitol city) is about 7 million inhabitants today (2007).
Also, about history, the marxist government led by Allende ended with the military stroke in 1973, but that armed intervention was promoted by the congress, they asked the armed forces to defeat the communist regime. Also, that strike was led by Admiral Jose Toribio Merino, the Navy head in 1973. Pinochet assumed as the head of the military jointed forces who assume control of Chile after the strike, it was really an autoritary regime, yes, a dictatorship, no (otherwise, please someone explain me how a "dictatorship" aloud the existance of anti regime political parties (which, in fact, never dissapeared during the regime), also, anti regime newspapers (like "fortin mapocho", Apsi magazine, etc) and other stuff like that, also we could protest in the streets and not to be killed for that (like cuba), and over all, which dictatorship gives un power by democratic elections? took a broke country and give a region-leader one?, which dictator in history pass the government to a political opositor?.
So it's a little too much to call it a dictatorship, better an autoritary regime.
Please take that in count, Chilean history unfortunately was written by people with no neutral points of view, also was told by people who was expelled from chile (not killed) because they was pro-marxist, and Pinochet don't want them there for the reconstruction.
Chile got a civil war with less than 3000 dead (both sides), is there another country with that in his history?, nope. Thanks. |
