The Dutch government tranferred sovereignty to the United States of Indonesia in December 1949. The de facto president was Sukarno who quickly renamed the new country "Republik Indonesia". Unfortunately, I forgot the year when RI was officially admitted to the UN.

The then Dutch government was put under pressure to transfer sovereignty by the UN and the US. The Dutch colonial army (KNIL) already held Sukarno as a prisoner thru 2 "politionele acties" that incurred the wrath of the American people. The US President then was Harry Truman.

@Misbah Regrettably, Indonesia' educational system leaves much to be wanted. Although we most certainly have brilliant minds that could very possibly house the potential to facillitate the production of these 'super cars' by a dime a dozen, the vast majority of the population is operating on a system that simply isn't developed enough to accomodate this talent. Furthermore, the braindrain that the country is experiencing does not really help. Quite a vicious circle, really. (Apologies for rambling)

@Wesley Rome You mean General Soeharto? They were allowed to have elections. It's just that it was set up in such a way that Soeharto's party (Golkar) was sure to win.

@Ronnie Do you really think so? During the colonial era the Dutch did not bother to develop the educational system and infrastructure like the British did with Singapore and Malaysia. They really did not see the power of investment in the wellfare of the people. After having three centuries of Dutch rule compressed into three years by the brutal Japanese regime, it would have seemed very logical to try for independence... Of course the Dutch were in no condition to retain the Indies after WWII anyway.

@Ronnie: You think Indonesia has not had a good education???? Indonesia could make a car that can go from Jakarta to Jayapura only using one liter of gasoline.

Indonesia has a tropical climate, so the temperature does not vary too much, it's between 28-31 degree celcius all year long. It established an independent government after Japanese surrendered control of the region in 1945.
