Agreeing with JJ. Historically, it has always been called 'the East Sea', even in Japan. And 'the Sea of Japan' assumes that the sea belongs only to Japan, which is ridiculous. It shouldn't be called as 'the Sea of Japan' or 'the Sea of Korea', but as 'the East Sea'. That's fair.
I laugh at Japan's efforts to get its way through lobbying and its sizeable economy. Japan needs to get a conscience. Not just in the naming dispute over the sea, either. |

"However, calling the sea East Sea also have some problems. Japan, for instance, have the sea on the west side of it."
JSPark is being logical without resorting to excuses in creating a patina for hyper-nationalism.
The two countries must both acknowledge and reconcile their bowdlerized pasts amongst themselves and each other, before moving on to naming some little rocks or sea(which the world couldn't care less about).
Verdant Politicions' in Korea and Japan bring up these points every election to inflame the public, so they can deflect the real insuperable issues at hand.
Good Luck East Asia! |

Sea of japan was called internationally after 1900, when korea was colonized by japan and no goverment representative from Korea was allowed to attend international meeting for naming coast. East Sea was call by koreans and chinese since 100 AD, I dont think there was any goverment system in Japan at that time. During 16th and 17th century it was mostly known "sea of corea" or "east sea" also known as "oriental sea" internationally and by most of the european countries, such as Great Britain, France, Spain, and so on.
I think it should be called East Sea and end the matter to settle between two countries. |
Minje 26th March 2006 |
"East sea"is right name. It's been called by that name since 15c(it's on many old maps of china, korea and even japan maps)
"Sea of japan"is incorrect. |
Nams 11th December 2005 |
'East sea' is not just a local name for Koreans.
the actual name of the sea is 'East sea' and, most of that region (apart from the sea which is close to Japan) belongs to Korea. just because Japan is a economically stronger country than Korea, it doesn't means that it should be called as 'sea of Japan' in the world map instead of the name 'East sea' when it actually belongs to Korea |

As a fourth person, I want to draw your attention to the fact that North Korea calls "Sea of Japan" as "Sea of Korea". Because the two Korean countries will soon be unified by the great leader of Korean race "Kim Jong-il" as Unified Korea (UNKO), I strongly suggest that the sea should be called as "Sea of Korea"!!! |

As a third person, from US, I understand that almost all
historical maps pre-dating WWI use the name East Sea or Sea of Korea. However, I agree with Iris. It is ridiculous to
use a single country's name.
It's only called the Sea of Japan now because of Japans
economic influence. This is not only historically incorrect,
but shamelessly childish. |
craig 13th September 2005 |
I guess middle school students know all, it must be the east Sea! Too bad all the maps I own say the Sea of Japan. after another 25 years of arguing these 2 countries will still call it their own name. |
JSPark 21st August 2005 |
You see, East Sea is rather suitable name for the sea since it is placed East Side of most Asian countries. Also, as "iris" said above, the sea is shared between two countries (quite a huge portion of the sea is Korea's). Calling that sea as Sea of JAPAN seem as calling the sea entirely belong to Japan. Justification of the name, Sea of Japan, is questionable in many sense.
However, calling the sea East Sea also have some problems. Japan, for instance, have the sea on the west side of it. Most acceptable name for the sea would be something as "Orient Sea" or "Blue Sea". These names come from the historical documents of the East Asian countries.
To "kimkimo"
We(Koreans) don't try to call Yellow Sea as West Sea, since it is too biased idea to call it as "West". Yellow Sea is only placed west to Korea (and Japan), so calling it as West Sea is inappropriate. |
JJ 31st July 2005 |
Historically even the Japanese called the sea "East Sea" in their own Royal maps pre 1900s. After the Japanese annexed Korea they lobbied to have it changed to "Sea of Japan". I agree with the comment above, what's their problem, call it East Sea. It's not like they're trying to call it the "Sea of Korea" good lord. The Japanese are trying to become influential globally, which is pretty funny considering they are trying to uphold past criminal acts in this day and age. |

Seeing how the map labelled Dokdo (Japanese calls it Takeshima) as 'Liancourt Rocks', it seems to try to stay away from the dispute, but then they had to label the surrounding sea as the Sea of Japan despite the presence of the dispute of its name. At the least, East Sea should have been written side-by-side. |
iris 12th June 2005 |
Thinking about it - not many other places in the world name a sea by just the name of one country if it is directly between two countries. It's simply kindergarten logic: its called sharing. It should most definitely be called the East sea. If the Japanese had any sort of a conscience, they would also be saying "lets call it the East sea".
P.s. I am from Australia just so you know im unbiased and i am seeing it from a third person's point of view. |

I submitted a correction request on Jan. 12, 2005.
Since then, I've heard nothing from you and my request has not been reflected. Please correct liberation year of Korea from Japan to 1945 on your page at http://www.nationmaster.com/country/ks.
You can contact me at hrhong@korea.net.
Thank you for your cooperation.
I really hope to hear from you. |

Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for providing information about South Korea.
I am writing to inform you of the error found on your web page at http://www.nationmaster.com/country/ks.
In the summary, you wrote: Korea became independent from Japan in 1946 and split into North- and South-Korea in 1948.
The fact is that Korea was liberated on August 15, 1945 after Japan's defeat in the World War II.
This year of 2005 will mark the 60th anniversary of Korea's liberation.
Please rewrite it to: Korea became independent from Japan in 1945.

Thank you so much and I look forward to hearing from you.
