The "official" statistics listed above are not correct. They are the statistics that the Korean government gives out to requests for infomration. They are distorted to show no non-believers in Korea.
The real figures as reported in a 1995 government survey are available at the first link (which is a Javascript popup) at http://wwwsearch.nso.go.kr/search/search2/kosis/SearchR0.jsp?QUERY=%C1%BE%B1%B3&SYNM_CB=on&SYNM_CHECK=YES&DATA_TYPE=0&OCODE=101&PAGENUM=START&PAGE_CLICK=NO
For the non-Korean literate, the first row on the chart is the population of the whole country. The columns are the statistics from 1995. (The other rows show figures for different provinces and areas in Korea.)
A modified chart is translated and reproduced below.
Country Population 44,553,710
Not Religous 21,953,315 49.27%
Religious Believers 22,597,824 50.73%
Buddhists 10,321,012 23.16%
Protestants 8,760,336 19.66%
Catholics 2,950,730 6.52%
Confucianists 210,927 00.47%
Won Buddhist 86,823 00.20%
Other 270,567 00.61%
Not Religous 21,953,315 49.27%
Total 100.00%
Some more calculation will show that the "official" government figures are the percentages of only the religious believers in the country (i.e., that 49% of believers are Christian, 47% of believers are Buddhist, etc., when only 26% of all Koreans are Christian, and 23% of all Koreans are Buddhist, etc.)
Please correct the misinformation on your page.

These figures reported for religious believers are WRONG.
The figures reported for religious believers are the percentages of people who claim a religion. It does NOT count the non-religious.
In 1995, the government reported that 21,593,000 citizens, or 48.4% of the population "did not practice any religion."
For the record:
Non-Religious 48.4%
Buddhist 23.3%
Protestant 19.6%
Catholic 6.6%
Confucian 0.5%
Other Religions 0.6%

P.S. Don't be fooled by the URL. The statistics come from the Korean government. |
