Actually I think the latest stats show a significant increase in deforestation due to forest owners attempting to circumvent carbon-sink policies and cash-in (literally) on current diary products boom and convert forests to diary farms (and possibly in some cases residential zoning although I'm guessing that this is insignificant with respect to total land area). Thus we have evidently suffered our most significant deforestation figures in a longtime, stats probably not extant until after the first posting on this. |

Deforestation is not a "current issue" in New Zealand. Twenty-five percent of the land area is covered in forest. The rest was deforested between 1250-1900 AD. There has been very little deforestation since then, and logging of natural forests in New Zealand is currently almost zero. There is, however, ongoing harvesting of planted production forests. This is not an environmental issue. |
