the Russian people are Slav but they have lots of Germanic blood, even the goths went there{a German tribe] but they have some Mongolian blood also, you can even see this a little in there face.I'm not too sure how much of Slav,Germanic and Mongolian they have, but i,m sure DNA testing of the population would tell us everything, if it hasn't already been dun. But some nice girls they have. |

The Russian people are NOT Germanic. The Slavs had already occupied the land when the Nordic tribes ventured into Eurasia. Though they did help establish a government, the level of inter-breeding between Slavs and the Nordic tribes was not enough to warrant the claim that the Russian people are of Germanic origin. Magnus is a scandinavian name. Never trust information on Russia from a scandinavian. |

It’s sad how imperialistic propaganda has diminished a man as you as “Joseph Stalin”.
“Oooo Stalin was a brute! He killed millions! Argh!!!”
Millions eh? Now which millions would that be? Those who collaborated with Nazi Germany? The millions that left their ammunition and supplies behind without a fight to be used against the civilians of the U.S.S.R? The millions of farmers that would rather raze their tiny crops instead of combining them to feed a growing and industrious nation(s)? The millions that were starved to death by American, British and French blockades? The millions missing from rural areas… which moved into larger cities to find employment in the booming U.S.S.R? The millions that western nations said to cover up/shield their own poor recovery, where the U.S.S.R was thriving? The millions that no shred of evidence was established by Western journalists who actually WENT to the U.S.S.R and investigated, and whose opinions are only viable. Or was it the millions that were conjured up by sheer envy and propaganda of the Western nations?
Simple-minded children, when will you learn? You only degrade yourselves, but if you wish to stick to your spoon fed cant and propaganda, go right ahead. |

In spite of the fact that Russia's official language is Slavic, Russian people are, first of all, of Germanic origin with Baltic, Finnish and, of course, Slavic blood. |

If I hear one more obnoxious pundit declare Putin is "Stalin lite" I am going to scream! Putin may not be the greatest democrat in the world but he has had no one shot, he has sent no informers out to spy on people, he has assassinated no one nor set up labor camps nor started a reign of terror. And furthermore, comparisons to Stalin, one of most evil men is history, are not to be tossed around lightly! |

Jess,
Russia is not warm-water locked. The country has coast lines to the Black sea and the Baltic sea. Before the WW1 the Russian empire had a bigger coast line in warm waters than today's Russia (Ukraine, the Baltic states and periodically Finland were parts of the empire). |

To Kirienko:
I dont believe that is true Russia will have the highest GDP per capita. You seem to forget that other nations dont simply freeze their GDP per capitas just so Russia can pass. Canada, probably the only western nation outside of the US that will continue to grow, will probably be the richest nation. After all Russia's population is decreasing if you closely examine the graphs. And what comes with a decreasing population is also a smaller workforce, and economy slowing down. Most people moving out of Russia are young. Therefore the workforce will age out and of course Russia's economy will almost halt unless they somehow manage to get people to immigrate to Russia. And that might not be happening for a while until Russia takes more responsibility in getting rid of communists that still exists, and promoting democracy. Don't get me wrong, I love Russia. I am partly Russian myself, I am just stating some factors that may be problems for Russia down the road. |

Is there an Institute for the study of democracy in Russia? |
C Kirienko 6th June 2005 |
There are a lot of people here that don't know much about Russia. Russia is in two continents, Europe and Asia, but lately it has been quite popular to say that Russia is part of Eurasia, a reference for countries that are widely considered as being related to two continents (Turkey, Georgia, Isreal and Kazakhstan also have the pleasure of being refered to as such). Russia is a democracy but not in the same structure as what West Europe or the USA is. Distrust between East and West still exists, so generally speaking Western media is very critical of Russia and vice verser. People say the governement controls the media in Russia, but all governments do, both the USA and UK have governing bodies that regulate the media and both countries have about 40% of media controlled by Rupert Murdoch! West isn't so free after all... Russia has alot of developing to do, but remember, it is part of the G8, since 2003 it has been growing economically at a rate that is only equalled by China and a handful of other countries. The world bank believed that in 50 years, Russia along with China, India, USA, Brazil will be the top five richest nations in the world, with (excluding the USA) Russia being the richest per capita. Of course Russia has problems with the Chechens, but then the English have problems with the Irish and the USA with... well... many countries around the world. Remember, in the last decade, Russia hasn't marched into other countries and invaded them (unlike the USA and some Middle Eastern countries). Finally, and important issue to state - Russia is a federation, it covers 11 time zones and spans half the world in length, 1/4 of the world in latitude, each state of Russia is like a different country - there is more difference between Moscow and Smolensk than there is between Los Angeles and Tokyo... infact even the time difference is greater! lol. Hope this snapshot helps. |

I am just so amazed at how old, outdated and biased this page is. As if the nationmaster described some mid-African country and not Russian Federation. "Authoritarian tendencies"? Gorbachev introduced something good? Guerrillas still plague in Chechnia. Hey, nationmaster, year 2000 called- it wants to go back, let it go! |
Jess 25th April 2005 |
Has Russia become landlocked again with no warm water ports for its products? Isn't this pretty much what caused WW1 with Russia trying to negotiate for warm water ports and signing conflicting treaties to obtain them? |
Krasnaya Lastochka 8th April 2005 |
To all the "democracy watch" groups that do weird stuff like say "this country is FREE, this other country is NOT FREE"...well regarding Russia, right now lots of people in Russia would rather have economic stability and 'law and order' than somebody else's idea of democracy. I know that sounds like Stalinism to many of you but it is not. Russia still has a basically free press and there are no more gulags, and there will be presidential elections in four years. So maybe Russia is not the grand old Jefferson democracy but give us credit for trying, and stop grandly proclaiming us "FREE" or "NOT FREE". It means nothing unless you see the whole world in black and white. |
