FACTOID # 53: If you thought Antarctica was inhospitable, think again - its land area is only ninety-eight percent ice. Reassuringly, the other 2% is categorised as "barren rock".

COMMENTARY

Neville Smith (Pietermaritzburg South Africa)
2nd February 2009
My paternal great-grandfather was in turned by the British on St Helena during the Boer War 1899-1902. I am seeking any information regarding the Boer prisoners particularly lists of the names of the prisoners and their period of imprisonment and the conditions under which they lived. Great grandfather's name was Giekie or Geikie (of German origin)and he apparently went back to South Africa to act as a scout for the British after which he changed his name to Smith. There is a family story that he fathered a child on St Helena and that there might consequently be cousins on the island. Any information that you can supply would be greatly appreciated.
