Property values fall and crime rates rise when pay day loan lenders move to the neighborhood, according to a new study. This isn't the first time that a link has been discussed between payday lending and crime, however the academic literature until now has never had much consensus. If payday loans are evil, good or someplace in between, it is hard to find out for sure. I read this here: Study blames crime rates on payday loan lenders, personalmoneystore.com/moneyblog

consumers in the United States and United Kingdom usually visit payday lending store to secure a small amount of cash to keep their budget a float until their next payday. There are really lots of similarities between the U.S. and the UK, even the similarities in something like payday loans. Payday loans are more or less the same. The requirements are pretty-much the same in both America and the UK. You have to have a job, and you have to be able to not only prove it, but prove that you’ve been there for at least 3 months, and you have to have an open and active checking account in good standing. We may not have nearly the amount of bookies, soccer hooligans, and we don’t give out knighthoods, but our payday loans are the same.

Peoples in the USA are actually not so very smart compared to us. They have a 25% illiteracy rate. They are rude and have bad manners. Canada is superior because the people are intelligent, polite, highly educated and very modest. It is too bad that the rest of the world cannot see past the US to a much superior culture and peoples just to the north. How the world would improve if they would just let us lead it.

You state that the US were "Buoyed by victories in World Wars I and II". Clearly that was written by an American. The arrogance. BOTH of those wars were WORLD WARS. The victory was a combined effort, that many nations can be thanked for. More importantly the sacrifice of the millions of people from those nations should be given more respect than your text provides. I was NOT a US victory. It was a victory for the Allies.

It's interesting to see the USA as a sovereign collection of individually sovereign states combined as one in this image, that isn't right! Some fail to grasp the significance of separated sovereign states but thats how our country was founded and for good reason! The conglomerated centralized interests have always proved tyrannical and that is way Jefferson outlined a system of checks and balances in more then the regular three you already know about executive judicial and legislative (congress/ the senate/ and the house of representatives) being split even more!

keep a watchful patriotic eye pointed at the federal government for if it should ask for to much power or insist dominance and supreme authority over the states it is then acting outside the constitution which it is designed to protect.

It seems that there is never a comparison of statistical data when the press speaks of the cost of the Iraq conflict. I'm speaking of ratios such as the current cost of the Iraq war versus the current gross domestic product, as compared to the Vietnam Conflict, WWII, etc. This information is very relevant when speaking of "the cost of war". Is it not?

Where could this data be found?

I am mixed of Irish from my father and my mother is Southern Italian. Mediteranean people are Caucasian as well as Northern Europeans. They are not identical but they are still white even if many or most of them have olive skin. The middle easterners and North Africans have similar coloring. Many or most of them to me are olive skinned caucasians. They are white but of course not like nordic people. I think they also have similar builds and bone structures. Now for Latin Americans or Latinos. Let us take Mexicans. Mexicans have 10 percent of the population that is pure blooded native american indians. Then you have about 60 percent of the population that is metizos but most of them look more European Spanish. Many of them would describe themeselves as light skinned latinos. Many of of the 60 percent are like theis Presidents like their Former President Vincente Fox and the new one are suppose to be Hispanic type of Metizos( some people do not know what that is. It is a mixture of White European Spanish and Native American Indian). These two clearly look white. There are a lot of admixtures of people who are metizos. Many of them have maybe 1/4 or 1/8 Indian blood and for most of them clearly look White Caucasian. Many of them Mexicans I know think they look more European but they know they might have some Indian blood to make them Metizos. Chile's people have so much of a mixture that the Indian blood has been diluted that most of them consider themselves White now. Brazil has the same thing. 35 percent of the population by the Brazilian government and only 6 percent is Black. Many of the mulatos are the same like Latinos. Many have mixed so much that many of the Mulatos look Caucasian or they can pass for it. I do not think their is anything wrong with being White. Europeans have a great history. It is amazing. The did conquer most of the world between the 15th and 19th Centuries and yes they did terrible things. You can blaame many of the old Empire's companies that exploited much of the world and the people but many people of Europe believe they were bringing the so called modernization. Remember they thought they were bringing the light of Civilization to the rest of the world. Missionaries also came to many parts of the world. Yes they wanted to bring Christianity but many people that they helped were not Christian. They brought medical advances and education. Yes they tried to help many people and they did. They still do today and they do not get credit to what they try to do to help many parts of the world. Remember everyone back in Europe and America in the Age of Enlightenment. It ideals spead to the rest of the world by European Christians. They ended slavery is the Western World and most parts of the world through their Empires. Slavery still exist is some form in Africa and Asia today especially Sex Slaves. Many Westerners are trying to get this to end but in those parts of the world wants the Westerners to but out of their affairs on that subject because many of them like that part of their culture. Remember 600,000 white men fought the Civil War and bought Slavery to an end in the south of the US whether they wanted to or not. Abolitionist were mostly White Christians that were influenced by the enlightnement. Remember some free black owned slaves as well. Slavery was an International Institution. It didn't start in the West. Many of the white people's ancestors were slaves themsleves. The Roman Empire and the Greek Empire 's slaves were mostly European with some extent from the middle east and North Africa( not too many black slaves and most of them were in North Africa. Remember when Julius Ceasar took of Gaul(France). They killed 1.5 million people and 1.5 million people ended up on the slave markets in Italy. Slave came from the word Slav. The Romans and Greeks called Slavic people who were from Russia and Poland as well as Czechs because many of them were sold into slavery that they got the name Slav. I wouldn't want to be a slave in anytime but with my research, I would rather have been a slave in America than back in the Ancient World. Even most Europeans in the middle ages were serfs and then peasants later on. Many of those people left Europe for America. Maybe many European Americans should sue Europe for repriations for how their ancestors where treated( I do not think they shold. It is all is the past. We make our lives now) Did anyone know about 4 to 5 million white people were kidnapped between the 1200 to 1800's by the Barbary Pirates that were mostly Algerian, Moorocans and to some extent Turks. They sold them on the slave markets in Cairo and other places. British and other Northern Europeans were very popular people tell us especially young boys and girls. They even said many English boys sold more than many Beautiful women on the slave market platforms. Lastly that was one reason why the French took over Algeria and Tunisia to stop that and they did. No one learns about that too much. In Africa, most of the slaves came from wars and they held them in horrible prisons by their own people. Africans on Africans and they( African and African Kings)sold them to European traders that later in the early 19th Century shut them down. The African Kings did not like that to much. Again all our ancestors suffered in history. It doesn't matter what race. We all suffered in the past. Everyone White, Black ,Chinese and others should be proud of their race and who they are as long as they do not think they are better than any other race. Some white people are having trouble with feeling proud of who they are. Read about your History. I know the Nazis in Germany were terrible but there were many people in history that were terrible from every race. The Nazis were just recent. Remember the Americans and the British put a stop to that. In history the Mongols wiped out many white people of Western Asia. Kazahkstan. They were Scythians. The Mongols and the Huns learned their way of life and wiped out many of them.

i believe the immigrants should have the right to stay in america. They do all the work the americans are too lazy to do, all they want to do is work. And those who dont should just go back. I think that the mexicans and others come to america do follow their dream, they are better workers than the americans and they have dreams that make them become tough. The rich americans dont really sometimes care. i think we should let the immigrants stay here and let them work dince they are good workers and much better than the americans from my point of view. Dont take it offencive just do the math, we mexicans are gracefull for those who understand us and well.....What do you people think?(remember im not being offencive)

If their going to compare European states individual in the stats why not give US states individually I bet you a lot of your formulas would actual end up very much different! All US states are not equal, in terms of economic, nor in terms of population, their only relatively equal in terms of political impact on the United States and that’s complicated, as each state has exactly 2 senators in the United States Senate which is a separate body of congress with effective Veto and required approval on US legislation, and various other powers. But the other body is the House of reprehensive which is a variable number of reps from each state but no less than 1, which general represents the states population and is districted by the state government’s laws (Same with senate, not too usual thou) and presidential electors are cast by each state how ever that state’s laws see fit to cast them but the number they get it equal to the number of senators and reps that state has(no less than 3(1 rep(no less), 2 senators(constant among all states)). This system is known as the electoral cottage, and most all US States chooses to cast their electors in an all or nothing fashion in presidential elections, although a few such as the state of Mane(Most North East State, next to NB), from time to time change that to some other format, of electoral cast division. A number of others such as Colorado and even California (the biggest and most powerful 55 electors (53 reps and 2 Senators) are also debating such a measure. Both have failed to implement it as of yet, last I heard. Reps, also called House members, are reevaluated for each state every 10 years according to the US censes, based upon the changes in population of each state. The electoral cottage is integral to the founding of the American republic, as it would not have been possible other wise, nor could it continue to function as successful as we do with out it.

In the U.S and in Latin America, "Latin" or "Latino" is short for LatinoAmericano -- meaning people from (or originating from) the non-Anglo AMERICAN countries. It does NOT include European continental Italians, French, Spanish or Portuguese.

'Hispanic' is a linguistic term, meaning a speaker of Spanish or someone from a Spanish culture. This would include people from Spain, all of Latin America except Brazil, and LatinoAmericanos in the U.S. and Canada.

Hispanic is equivalent to:
Lusitanic - Portuguese and Brazilians
Anglic (Anglo) - English and Scots, most White U.S. and Canadians
Germanic - Germans, Austrians, Swiss, and many White U.S. and Canadians
Francic (or Gaulic) - French, French Canadians

Mike: The term Latin refers to many things. First it means the language of ancient Italy. Nowadays it is also used on anythings it has to do with Italy, Spain and even Portugal some times. A term which applies to central and south america is Latin America because of the fact that they were once colonies of latin countries. (Spain and Portugal) So in the USA the term Latinos is now used for people from Latin America and not for people from the three european Latin countries. A similar example is the term Hispanics which is used for Latin-American immigrants mainly from Mexico (once a part of the kingdom of Spain) and not for someone who comes from Spain. (thats why the term is called "hispanic" and not "spanish"

Dear Ian,

I was reading your answer from 2005-04-19 to Vanessa, and I also would need to get some stats on the social class statuses in the US for a course, namely: The percentage of the population who belongs to the "Upper-Upper" class, "Lower-Upper" class, "Upper-Middle" class, "Middle" class, "Lower-Middle" class, "Upper-Lower" class and "lower-Lower" class.

If you don't have this information available, would it be possible to get your advice on some reliable sources please? (Preferably on the www)

Thank you!

I believe that Brazil, does in fact have a treaty with the U.S. for extradition. You may want to do some more checking. China, and N. Korea do not, but who is going there? I believe that there are about 45-50 countries that do not. However; it does depend upon the reason, as for some crimes there is (Narcotics, Money Laundering) and for others, low level criminal activity there may not be.

I don't understand why in the USA only the spanish-speaking people from central-south America are considered latins/latinos ? And the adjective latin only applied to these people. in fact, In the latin world south-central america is quite "periferical" compared with the original latin countries of Europe (Italy, Spian, Portugal, France).
Racially, a lot of latin americans are not latin at all but native indians, blacks, mulatos, mestizos (mixed)...
Why are they considered by US people to be more latin than south europeans while they are less in fact ?!

There are three factors which may assist to varying degrees in determining whether someone is considered Latin or not:
Political: whether they live in a country which is a member of the Latin Union (or, more vaguely, the Latin World); this definition covers more than 300 million people.
Linguistic: whether their mother tongue is Latin; this definition covers more than 200 million people.
Genealogical: whether they can trace their ancestry back to the original inhabitants of the Italian Peninsula.

From around eighth grade I have been interested in finding out the way our government groups people into racial categories on U.S. Census forms, State tests, and at the DMV, knowing that Hispanic is not a race and is already aforementioned on the forms. There seems to be many lacks of understanding on some and I am going to make it my sole duty to bring awareness to this politically sensitive matter. I support adding 'Mediterranean and Middle Easterner' to the application form. The system is so screwed up that everyone from countries east of the Middle East is considered Asian despite the fact that people from India are Caucasians and not at all relative to people from China.

It is stupid that our government views people of a darker complexion as non-Caucasian and we have all of these Northern Nazi types claiming to be the Aryan race. I am sorry but Aryan people are nothing close to Hitler's description. Iranians and people from the Indian subcontinent are the true Aryans, which doesn't even have a racial reference in their usage.

Our government just doesn't have a clue in the world how to identify people and therefore we have people of an unknown race because of ignorance. I don't understand why Hispanic shouldn't refer to Portuguese culture instead of just pertaining to Spanish culture especially when their cultures are more related to each other than our government gives them credit for. The definition is no doubt ignorant of that fact. After all they both occupy the same peninsula, which was known as Hispania and is known today as the Iberian Peninsula.

The Latins are the ancient ancestors of the Italians whom settle in the region of Italy known as Latium and is now Lazio. However, the Celt Iberians are the ancient ancestors of the Spanish and Portuguese and therefore they are a Celt Iberian people, not a Latin people despite their languages derive principally from their language. If a Latin is a native or resident of ancient Latium, then they aren't a native or inhabitant of Latin America. A Latino is a Hispanic American where as an Italian or someone of Italian descent residing in America is a Latin-American. However, people from Portugal and Brazil are not Hispanic American considering the definition for Hispanic.

I also have found out by curiosity that Ralph Nader is an Arab-American of Lebanese descent. Believe it or not Doug Flutie is also an Arab-American and they are white according to the government. This is why I perfer 'Mediterranean and Middle Easterner' added to the application. Latins, Greeks, Albanians, and Maltese (Mediterraneans) have a lot more in common with North Africans and Middle Easterners than Europeans: especially Greeks who have lived in Egypt since before the Roman Empire existed and Albanians who have been kings and princesses of Egypt. The Maltese speak a Semitic language derived mainly from Arabic with many loan words from Romance languages. They themselves are a great mixture of the peoples who have influenced them and their culture. Mediterraneans have generally the same complexion as Arabs because of where they live. In addition if I were full-blooded I would have more of an olive complexion even though it is not always true. ~ Steven Colosi

I also have found out by curiosity that Ralph Nader is an Arab-American of Lebanese descent. Believe it or not Doug Flutie is also an Arab-American and they are white according to the government. This is why I want Mediterranean andMiddle Easterner” added to the application. Latins, Greeks, Albanians have generally the same complexion as Arabs and in addition if I was full-blooded I would have more of an olive complexion even though even that is not always true.

From around eighth grade I have been interested in finding out the way our government groups people into racial categories on U.S. Census forms, State tests, and at the DMV knowing that Hispanic is not a race and is already aforementioned on the forms. There seems to be many lacks of understanding on some and I am going to make it my sole duty to bring awareness to this politically sensitive matter. I support adding Mediterranean and Middle Easterner as a separate category on the application form. The system is so screwed up that everyone from countries east of the Middle East is considered Asian despite the fact that people from India are Caucasians and not at all relative to people from China. It is stupid that our government views people of an olive complexion as non-Caucasian and we have all of these Northern Nazi types claiming to be the Aryan race. I am sorry but Aryan people are nothing close to Hitler’s description. Iranians and people from the Indian subcontinent are the true Aryans, which doesn’t even have a racial reference in their usage. Our government just doesn’t have a clue in the world how to identify people and therefore we have people of an “unknown race” because of ignorance. I don’t understand why Hispanic shouldn’t refer to Portuguese culture instead of just pertaining to Spanish culture especially when their cultures are more related to each other than our government gives them credit for. The definition is no doubt ignorant of that fact. After all the countries occupy the same peninsula, which was known as Hispania and is known today as the Iberian Peninsula. The Latins are the ancient ancestors of the Italians whom settle in the region of Italy known as Latium and is now Lazio. However, the Celtiberians are the ancient ancestors of the Spanish and Portuguese and therefore they are a Celtiberian people, not a Latin people despite their languages derive principally from their language. If a Latin is a native or resident of ancient Latium, then they aren’t a native or inhabitant of Latin America. A Latino is a Hispanic American whereas an Italian or someone of Italian descent residing in America is a Latin-American. However, people from Portugal and Brazil are not Hispanic American considering the definition for Hispanic. I also have found out by curiosity that Ralph Nader is an Arab-American of Lebanese descent. Believe it or not Doug Flutie is also an Arab-American and they are white according to the government. The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc. is a unique, multinational membership-based association composed of music industry professionals, musicians, producers, engineers and other creative and technical recording professionals who are dedicated to improving the quality of life and the cultural condition for Latin music and its makers both inside and outside the United States. Established in 1997, The Latin Recording Academy is the first international venture launched by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc., representing a vibrant and passionate creative community.

Headquartered in Miami, The Latin Recording Academy's members include music professionals in Italian- or Latin-speaking communities from around the world. The Latin Academy operates as a virtual meeting place for its membership and the organization is dedicated year-round to strengthening this cultural community via networking opportunities and educational outreach.

In mid-2002 The Latin Recording Academy elected its first independent Board of Trustees, a group of highly motivated and well-regarded professionals from the Latin music world who are shepherding the organization through its next stages of growth. The new Board has driven the organization’s efforts in staging the 4th and 5th Annual Latin GRAMMY events. The Latin GRAMMY Awards aim to recognize artistic and technical achievement, not sales figures or chart positions, with the winners determined by the votes of their peers — the qualified voting members of The Latin Recording Academy.

A main purpose of the Latin GRAMMY Awards is to recognize excellence and create a greater public awareness of the cultural diversity of Latin recording artists and creators, both domestically and internationally. The Latin GRAMMY nominees and winners are chosen via the same exacting process as the GRAMMY Awards, with two subtle but important differences: The membership is international, and the releases eligible for awards are issued both inside and outside the United States.

The Latin GRAMMY Awards, which is the first prime-time English-, Italian- and Latin-language telecast on U.S. television, is arguably the most high-profile celebration of Latin culture ever on the domestic airwaves. The show also has an impact in more than 100 international markets, focusing millions of eyes and ears on Latin music.

In August 2004, another signature Latin Academy event made history when the internationally renowned recording artist Carlos Santana was honored as the 2004 Latin Recording Academy Person Of The Year. The honor recognized Santana's professional, cultural and social accomplishments. The star-studded tribute dinner and concert took place at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. Organized in partnership with the MusiCares Foundation, Carlos Santana became the fifth Latin Recording Academy Person Of The Year honoree. Previous honorees have been Emilio Estefan Jr., Vicente Fernández, Gilberto Gil, and Julio Iglesias.

Creating yet another signature event series, The Latin Recording Academy expanded its nation-wide Latin GRAMMY Street Parties into an extremely successful second year, bringing the music and brand to the top U.S. Hispanic markets during the month of August. Latin GRAMMY Street Parties came to Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, New York and Miami, taking the Latin GRAMMY experience to the streets prior to the telecast of the 5th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards on Sept. 1 in Los Angeles.

The Latin Recording Academy's educational outreach programs have grown to include the e-Latin GRAMMY Carreras Y Música events, which have reached more than 10,000 high school age participants in at least 11 countries. Using interactive satellite technology, this Latin Recording Academy program educates students about the Latin recording industry, allowing them to discuss with musicians and members of the music industry what it's like to work in the business and what it takes to be successful in the field. This is in addition to the well-established domestic and international Latin GRAMMY education-related events that took place in Buenos Aires, Los Angeles and Miami in 2004.

The active and selfless participation of the numerous Latin Recording Academy members in countries around the world ensures that our programs and activities are current and relevant to the industry, while it also guarantees the integrity of the awards process as a peer honor that celebrates the achievements of all styles and genres of Latin music. The Latin Recording Academy and its members have accomplished much during the organization's short life, but this is a work in progress. Through the efforts of its staff and volunteer leadership this organization will continue to grow by strengthening its position as the premiere international Latin music awards and by becoming the industry’s most important resource for those interested in showing their support for Latin music and its makers. This is already happening as journalists, corporate sponsors, government and private organizations all reach out to the organization for direction, support and leadership.

Latin American (Latino)is a general description of people whose language derives from Latin. Hispanic refers to Spain, mainly for language and religion and lots of traditions. Not all Latin America is Hispanic.French, Spanish, and Portuguese, derived from Latin so Quebec, Mexico, Brazil, etc. are Latin Countries (in theory). Hispanic countries are the ones where Spain had colonies or where Spanish is spoken (theoretically, Southwest USA and Florida may be considered Hispanic). Brazil is not Hispanic.

Asian America includes people from South Asia -- India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. I never knew this because I thought Asian refers specifically to the yellow race.
