There are so many factors that go into causes of violence but I really do believe that because there are practically no industrial jobs . Just so quite literally very few pe0ple could gain more wealth than could ever be spent it has ripped our economic class apart . I meanevenif the jobs werent very good paying they would give people a purpose and give them back some pride and take away the depression in homs . Its too much to write here but please comprehend the domino effect . |

The US paints itself in a bad light.
We go to other countries and impose what we dare to call civility. And yes I said, dare to call it civility. We use and abuse others, and call it, progress.
I am proud to be an American, but this I am ashamed of, this shames me. |

We are one nation under God. This nation is and was established on biblical principles. These principles were given through the bible which is the inspired word of God. The commandments were established so we, as God's people would be able to live together without hurting one another. Don't steal, don't lie, don't kill. These are guidelines to live by. In doing so we will find joy in life. Fearing God means to reverence His superior wisdom and do what He says. In the bible we see that God was harsh on crime and He says the penalties are established so the crimes will be stopped. In countries where the penalties for crimes are more severe there is less crime and ultimately people are safer and happier. We are blessed to live in a free country but these freedoms need to be protected by enforcing strong penalties quickly for those who break the law. |

Lisa 26th January 2011 |
My theory is that the US crime rate is so high (maybe not the highest but very high) because of the history of violence & abuses, such as slavery & oppressive military/police behavior. Almost all of the founding population of the US was a slave population (yes, even non-blacks) & slaves were physically, psychologically & sexually abused. Physical abuse is a standard, accepted way to treat children in US culture as is the idea of "tough love", & children grow up & do to others what was done to them. It is also accepted subconsciously that when others are culturally or physically different it's ok to use violence to oppress them (Iraq, Afghanistan). The US has a history of & a culture of violence. Even if you pressed a button that made all guns on earth disappear, thousands of murders would still happen in the US, so long as the acceptance of violence as a solution to problems was still the way of life. |

Some of the prisoners for illicit drugs are for small amounts of pot, prescription abuse and addiction. Stop the supply coming in, corrupt pain managements centers and doctors. Stop the people supplying and selling drugs.
Poor management of tax dollars, corruption with in departments, change laws and practices even though it will effect the lively hood of people that a change can cause.
A little common sense can go a long ways. |
You+can+retire+now 6th November 2010 |
United States is high as it effects the livelihood of a large population.
Constant construction for more prison's, vendors, police, Judges, clerks, Attorney's, corruption and many people that work in different departments with a good salary, pension, insurance, working conditions and benefits.
A lot of faults in the legal system and repeat criminals. Murders & thieves have a good chance of not being found guilty. Jails are full of innocent people, sentences don't fit the crime very often. Jails are used very often to force people to pay child support, alimony, drug users, non-violent crimes and many others. Death sentence takes more then 10 years to execute with millions spent on each prisoner.
Money (tax dollars) would be spent wiser by sentences matching the crime, more surveillance camera's, stop immunity for testifying, prison time off for becoming a witness, stop the supply of illegal activity, stiffer sentences and more charges added for perjury (so much lying happens in the court system that it is a joke and circus act), more check and balances in all departments, educate people of laws and rights they have and have more & stiffer penalties on Judges and Attorney's that don't follow the law. |

US Moves for Arms Buildup under Fire
Pyongyang, October 17 (KCNA) -- The Republican Party of the U.S. in the "commitment" made public with the Nov. 2 Congressional off-year election at hand revealed its attempt to put spurs to the arms buildup under the pretext of the "military threat" from the north.
Rodong Sinmun Sunday observes in a signed commentary carried in this regard:
The group of the Republican Party is hatching a terrific plot to put the whole world in the crucible of arms race by stepping up the establishment of the missile defense system while collecting a colossal amount of fund from people for the election campaign.
The U.S. warlike forces are running wild in moves for a war of aggression against the DPRK to establish the domination over the whole of Korea at any cost, considering the Korean Peninsula as the strategic vantage for realizing the Asia strategy.
In March the U.S. imperialists egged south Korea on to orchestrate the case of sinking of a warship and groundlessly passed the buck for the case to the DPRK. They staged large-scale anti-DPRK war exercises one after another with the warmongers of south Korea, gravely threatening the sovereignty and security of the DPRK.
The DPRK has bolstered the military capability to defend the sovereignty of the country and the dignity of the nation from the aggression of the U.S., not to threaten someone.
It is the spasmodic symptom of one seized by a war fever for the U.S. Republican Party to spark off arms race, while talking about the non-existent "threat" from someone.
The group of the Republican Party is miscalculated, however.
The U.S. warlike forces are vociferating about someone's "threat" but it will get them nowhere.
Their rash act to realize the ambition for stifling the DPRK quite contrary to the trend of the times will only compel the DPRK to bolster the might of Songun and precipitate their self-destruction.
The group is bound to meet destruction for pursuing foolish moves to bring down the DPRK. |

Wow this site has alot of info and no its not trying to paint the U.S. in a bad light its here to present the facts and i does this for all the countries in the world so those that say that are wrong in my opinion. I'm also a senior in high school writing a paper thats 14 pages long on the statistics of crime in the united states. I know from personal expierience that many rape and assult cases go unsolved basically because they believe the women or girls making these charges are making it up. So alot of stuff goes un justified and I'm realizing more and more that this country is all about money nowadays because my fiance has been diagnosed for cancer for a year and untill it got at its worst after she turned 18 nobody would treat her. This counrty is a fuqed up one and now she may not live past the age of 20 but this country is an incredible one and it's got the rite idea but it's missing one thing: GOD its missing the basic principle it was buit upon thats why there is a bible buired under the Lincoln Memorial. But i have alwayz and will alway want to join the Marine Crorps so you better believe that if im going to put my life on the line ofr this country that I do have pride for it and a very few of the people in it. |

As an American, I am ashamed and surprised to say that the United States is quite hypocritical. Americans like to say that they love freedom and justice, but here are some examples of where American actions conflict with American standards:
1. The US inspected a Soviet Union fighter jet that landed in Japan in 1976, but protested that China should not search an American plane that landed in China in 2001.
http://home.iwichita.com/rh1/hold/av/avhist/mily/spyplane.htm
http://archives.cnn.com/2001/WORLD/asiapcf/east/04/02/china.aircollision.03/
2. The Fifth Amendment of the Bill of Rights clearly states that people should not be subject to the same offense twice, but sex offenders can be convicted of crimes and then later be required to register as sex offenders and be held for life under indefinite civil commitment laws even after they complete their original sentences. “John TV” shows that embarrass and punish people arrested on prostitution charges also violate the Fifth Amendment guarantee of due process rights.
http://edition.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/01/12/scotus.sex.offender.law/index.html
http://www.acluofnorthcarolina.org/?q=due-process
3. The Sixth Amendment guaranteeing the right to speedy trials is violated by holding prisoners at Guantanamo Bay without charge. The Eighth Amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishments and is violated by torturing Guantanamo Bay prisoners. Whether the prisoners are foreigners or not makes no difference because it violates the intent of the Constitution and sends the message to other nations that human rights violations are acceptable. Taking the moral high ground is difficult when you are immoral yourself. If you want to prevent terrorism, give terrorists a trial, improve airline security, and don't give out visas easily. Torturing a suspected terrorists only recruits more terrorists. Two wrongs don't make a right.
http://www.historiansagainstwar.org/resources/torture/cohn.html
4. The Fourth Amendment protection against illegal searches is violated by the Patriot Act that allows secret warrants.
http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/webster/090419
5. The Fourth Amendment protection against illegal searches and seizures, the Fifth amendment that allows due process, and the Eighth Amendment that forbids excessive bail, fines, and cruel and unusual punishment are all violated by DUI checkpoints and asset forfeiture laws.
http://detnews.com/article/20091112/METRO/911120388/Police-property-seizures-ensnare-even-the-innocent
6. The Fourth Amendment protection against illegal searches and the Fourteenth Amendment that guarantees equal protection of the law is violated by Arizona's immigration law that requires police to question people who look like illegal immigrants. Illegal immigration would be better stopped by having a strong border and fining employers of illegal immigrants, not by profiling Americans who look like foreigners.
http://www.salem-news.com/articles/may062010/arizona-law-rs.php
Maybe it is just human nature, but Americans have always looked for an enemy to blame from witches to blacks to Communists. Today people are aghast that the US had Japanese concentration camps and once allowed slavery and segregation. How will people look back on the treatment of sex offenders, Muslims, and illegal immigrants in the USA 60 years from now?
Criminals should be punished, but only in a way that doesn't violate the Constitution. Even innocent people can be arrested and wrongly convicted.
If you care about your freedom, write your elected officials. Governments would love to take away all your freedom if they could. Our freedoms are diminishing, not growing. Stand up, fight for your rights, and protect our freedom now!

I live on one the "so called" worse estates in the UK (manor) yet the nurder rate is practically zero!
But then we dont have the Gang's like they do in the US, to be fare apart from maybe Colombia and Mexico who does have gang problems like they have? I am not trying to make excuses for America but they have Mexico just over the border and Colombia not to far away! this surely causes massive amounts of crime?
If america got rid of it's guns i am sure it would be way down on most lists.
I also have friends that have travelled to the USA and said how friendly, polite and helpful americans are so please dont judge them all.
Finally my friend who visited recently said how shocked she was about the poverty level! She said for the worlds richest country its a disgrace how poor people live. |

I am stunned by the number of crimes in the US. I was led to this site today because one asked me the question if I know how many died in the US in 2009 due to un-natural death. I had no idea. 16,000+ murders and huge rate of suicides (the total is close of 90,000 if one correct the rates given by the total number of population in the age groups and add them together. Then the total number of crimes is 11+ millions with the US ranking number 1! While the government is spending so much money and the media so much publicity on terrorism cases, which are really few compared to the number in the table above, the government and media are silent about the real cause of death in the US, which is due mostly to social problem requiring a lot of insight, research and improvement of living standards of inner cities including education, jobs, health insurance and better living standard. The media are focussed on terror cases as if it is the actual danger that threatens the USA structure. The real danger is hidden and not covered at all! Exposing the real danger cost money to solve it. Focusing on outside danger only helps influence and control the masses. |

How interesting it is that when someone from the US states just gives their opinion, they are accused of being "judge and jury", yet they are the most harshly judged nation ( and the most generous )in the world.
I read other nations reports on themselves(I do not trust our media to present their reality as they fail miserably at being honest about ours), their internet news reports, government sites, etc, to find out their conditions/stats. Based on this, I have come to the conclusion that the more dangerous the nation/government, the less likely one is to recieve a true report of their conditions. |

Yeah, removing guns is a great way to reduce crime. I wish our streets could be ruled by wantonly violent gangs of chavs who keep the citizenry shut up in their homes. Rule, Britannia. No, the US has more violent crime because of constant racial tensions and a persistant poverty among the descendants of our immigrant and slave populations. Basically, our poor procreate too much and turn criminal. If we removed the gun deaths by removing guns, we'd just see more of other kinds of murder. Soon, we'd be trying to outlaw cutlery like the Brits. |

What time period do these statistics come from?
Is this the average crime rate in the U.S. per year or does this data come from a specific time frame? |
Dan (USA) 11th July 2007 |
All ratings should be per capita, or else they are useless as comparisons. Saying the USA has the highest assault amount of assaults means nothing considering it has the third biggest population in the world. If it has the highest assault rate (which I'm sure it doesn't), this would mean something. Since this is the case, through blatant Anti-Americanism people will misconstrue this data (not to say the USA doesn't have problems with crime, although its overall non violent crime rate is lower then many other first world nations). Also other crimes should be listed such as robbery, burglary etc. |
We can do better (Washington) 11th June 2007 |
Ask a law student, they will tell you that our system is not about justice, even though the slogal is plastered through our American physchi. Our laws are incredibly bias and favor a very select group of people, hmmm, could it be those who make the laws that benefit?
For example, drugs account for a huge portion of offenses, but why is tobacco, proven to cause serious illness still legal? Meanwhile drugs more commonly used among minorities are outright illegal with incredibly harsh penalties and very little evidence that the drugs(pot) cause any real threat to our society.
Justice is not color blind, nor is it class free. I just hope that those who adementally defend our system of inequality don't one day become 'victims' our the system they helped to create; though that would be ironically true justice.
Our country is good, but boy, it sure could be better. Write your congress people today about what is important to you. |

you are talking about america like its such a small place america is so vast and such a large and diverse place that areas can change very suddenly depending on where you are. These stats also are misleading because they don't differentiate between people who legally own guns and used them for self defense, verses criminals who illegally obtained them and were killed. Nor does it state if any of the murders were suicide by police - criminal intentionally getting killed by cops. There is something wrong about the figures. Where does the UN arrive at 23,677,800? According to Disaster Center (http://www.disastercenter.com/crime/uscrime.htm) and FBI (http://www.fbi.gov/filelink.html?file=/ucr/cius_00/00crime2.pdf), the total crime in the United States is 11,634,378 in 1999 and 11,608,072 in 2000. I read the crime statistics regularly. The highest United States ever been to in total crime numbers is 14,872,900. Do the people in UN do any real research, or do they just want to make United States look bad by deliberately jacking up the crime figures? |
Will (USA) 23rd March 2007 |
By an observational level, America does seem to have more criminal offenses then other countries. My guesses is one that, in agreement, America does get its drugs from places like Columbia and, in some ways, it goes to groups which use the income to finance private armies to fight against the United States. I believe that the Red Army is one example I believe.
Second, this is only in terms of hunch, that some or most of the parents which have children whom do crime and parents that do crime as well never teached their child right from wrong. In some, by hunch, of the ones who do know the rights and wrongs assume that since they know right from wrong then it would be obvious that the child will know. In which, children have to be taught that, else they never learn it.
Third, not that I am against the United States, also in agree, that some of the countries have a better law system. To include, some also have low criminal offense because they have a moral like code. Like in one example, bowing and greeting and such is an example of a moral like code.
Not to say all American's emoral, but only some are probably are.
Fourth, in agreeing and have seen, that some laws are not as strict. For example, you get like 16 months for a first offense of murder. And the criminal is not brought to sit and rethink their behavior. Some just pay the bill and off they go. Then again, as of hunch, receiveing bail is kind of like a bribe but with the name bail.
Five is that some to all of the criminals do not have sense in some certain fashion. You can notice it sometimes in action and word. Just an example of sense, an example is on this board. Compare Jizzzzm(Ya mum) with someone elses like Jhon. Notice how Jizzzzm(Ya mum)'s comment is such versus Jhon's comment. Jhon's, for example, has more of a sense then Jizzzzm(Ya mum)'s. To state, most criminals have that same kind of talk that Jizzzzm(Ya mum) put up as a statement (I THINK I SHOULD SNORT MORE COKE I LIKE BALLS WITH WHIP CREAM MMMM). |

The most ironic thing about what is often called the prison industrial complex is it actually hurts every part of society except the profiteers. There is no attempt to rehabilitate or educate criminals so the come out angrier, stronger and, thanks to in some cases unconstitutional post-imprisonment penalties, with less prospects of playing a productive role in society. It costs tax payers far more to cage an American than to provide the quality education, after-school and re-training programs that might have kept them off the street and out of trouble. Everyone except politicians will tell you jail time is not dissuasive to crimes of passion and drug use so taxpayers pay more and more for nothing every time a politician proves his or her bones by calling for longer sentences. The distortion in the way authorities police US communities means immigrants and people of color are less likely to report crime to the police who can often be as threatening and dangerous in those communities as the criminals while the "white" drug user, abuser and of course serial killer is able to prey on his community much longer because of the generous benefit of the doubt accorded those citizens. |
james (USA) 25th December 2006 |
Obviously the US legal system perpetuates a law enforcement growth industry that expands at the expense of private industry . As more resources are required to sustain it new laws are continuously added to the books. This creates more jobs for lawyers, police, prison contractors, etc. while at the same time creating new classes of criminals. The sad truth is that everyone in America is a criminal. It is just a matter of how bad they want you or the extent to which the laws are enforced. The drug laws preserve the pharmaceutical industry and american medical association racket. There is more money in locking people up than preventing crime. Crime will only continue to increase because of this. This is the case of the doctor causing the illness so you will willingly pay for more tests and more cure alls. |

What's SAD is that child molesters quite often get less time in prison than non-violent drug offenders. A dime bag in your pocket? You're the scum of the earth! You'll never be able to get a student loan or grant, a federal job, etc. Molest a child? You'll be out in five years if you even go to prison! You'll still be able to get a student loan if you want to go back to school.
America's so called "War on Drugs" has skewed the perception of right and wrong so badly that we can't tell the difference any more. |

In responce to Tom sir with respect the other countries have way less crime rate then us country. on law system they have a better law system thats why they have less crime i dont mean government law but punishment laws which we dont have that strong which make other countries prisoner run to us for saftey. which make us look bad afterward. |

hmm . . . I would like to say that the US is safe but . . .
* All my neighbors have been robbed at least once (I haven't because I have an obnoxious dog)
*Two of my mother's friends were followed home, assaulted, and robbed in broad daylight.
*The Art Gallery my mom works at was robbed three times in one week.
*I could go into car thefts but there are too many for me to remember each one.
*Calling our police corrupt is a gross understatement. One of our friends were physically threatened by two police officers, and you DO NOT want to be pulled over by one, trust me.
*One of my friends talk about waking up every morning to gunshots on his block. (There was a drug and whore house on the same street)

i think you all are idiots. It can be dangerous no matter where you live. I've traveled the world and seen a lot of countries but every person I ever spoke to has said that at least once or twice in their lives have they feared to go out or even to come into their own home. So it doesn't matter where you live, it can be dangerous anywhere. |

I am a US citizen.I have lived here all my life. You are more likely to be a victim of some type, if you are in the more densely populated metropolitan areas.( NYC, Philly, LA, New Orleans, Chicago, or Detroit.) Please get your facts straight before you make ignorant accusations against my country. Crime and problems come to those who seek it. The US has it's positives and negatives. But then again, doesn't all the world? The US is a great place to live. Retain some education about any country before you knock it. Go visit Lake Placid, NY in the winter. Go to Disneyland in Orlando. Got to Las Vegas. After you visit the US then make your call. |

Doesn't it seem odd that while we are the most efficient at prosecuting crime, we are failing to deter crime. Of course it could be better, but have some accountability or move to wherever you think is safer-try Columbia. |

I think life should be lived to the fullest, if not then we would all die in vain. There are ways of protecting ourselves, and taking procautions to secure ourselves to become less vulnerable. There are hidden dangers every where, not just in Africa, the United States, or Foreign Countries that more than half of us don't even know exist. You can't tap into every mind to see if a person is crimal, theif, car-jacker, murderer, sex-offender, stalker, or just some sick-minded individual. I'm sure there are people in today's society, who are friends, neighbors, or co-workers with individuals that they might not know as well as they thought that could fit one or more of the folling descriptions. You can't always go by statistics. We all will never know. But you can't live your life in total fear. No one can control anothers mind. The choices made by one individual effects not only one life; it affects us all. |

We are forgetting something. These stats are those that are reported. Some countries or regions are not exactly forthcoming in there reporting of crime. Yes we do prosecute and incarcerate more of our own citizens than other countries (Steve, 2005-05-31), because we are more apt to enforce our laws than other countries. That does not mean that we are perfect. I have lived in other countries and have seen some of their methods of law. I would not like to get into their system as a victim. Money talks in most places. As far as moral values, that depends on the person and the place in this country that you live. (California vs Montana, LA vs Helena) I think if you surf the internet you will see that things come out more evenly than you think,in the Western Countries at least. As far as a dangerious place to live, the world is dangerous. Americans as a rule do not try to escape to other countries due to crime or government persecution for crimes commited. No other country hands out so many "severe suspended sentences" as the U.S.. Probably why people come here as opposed to Britain or India. |

It is so pathetic to notice the ignorance of so many of you. Some of you have never even ventured outside of New York, California, or never left the U.S. but prompt to say so much garbage. What you guys need to do is educate your selves (no offense).
In case you guys don't know, the U.S. has a country is a very rich but individually, you are not better off than people living in third world countries. Most of the things you own, whether your car, house, furniture were all purchase on a credit basis. Which means, if you don't make your payments, they will take all those things away. This is a tragedy for the so called 'rich Americans"
People in other countries do not need credit to purchase things. Everything they own was purchased with cash. You need financial aid to go to school, people in places like Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East do not financial aid from their government to educate themselves. Think about it!
When it comes to the most dangerous places in the world, don't fool yourself, America is the number one. In case you don't know, you own media avoids telling you the truth because they know you will all be affected with paranoia..they are just fooling you. Just study the murder rate per county, city, state and then at the national level and you will understand. In case you don't know, someone is raped in your own country each 3-5mn...a crime is committed every 60 seconds....just educate yourself instead of sitting in the comfort of your dwellings to say non sense.
Peace and love |

It's ridiculous to compare crime in the U.S. to such countries as Russia, Africa and Countries in the middle east. These are 3rd world countries with completely different political systems, laws and ways of life. But if you compare the U.S. to similar countries such as the U.K., certain European countries, Australia, New Zealand and the like, I bet you will find that crime in the U.S. is in fact far worse any which way you'd like to compare it. |

p.s. i'm betting half of the people in prison in the US are in for smoking weed :( |

Hey APH,
Do the words "per capita" mean anything to you? That's what I thought. Lemme explain. It means "per person" in the country, so it is averaged out so you can compare "apples to apples" as the saying goes. So if the USA is ranked 25th in terms of "crimes per capita" it IS NOT better than being ranked 45th. I'll forgive you if you promise not to procreate. |
Darryl 3rd August 2005 |
The murder rate (per capita) in the United States is considerably higher most other developed countries (This should be the main criteria for comparison. Columbia is a developing country and has a very large disparity with regards to the wealth distribution). Furthermore, the United States has the most prisoners per capita. Don't forget that Russia and Ukraine are struggling with mafia and this would explain the high values for prisoners there. The U.S. spends ca. $ 25,000 per prisioner per annum. That is $ 50 billion per year! Because the U.S. is one of the only developed countries without universal health care, American prisoners are often better taken care of than in society (they are provided with shelter, food, health and dental care). Certainly, some prisoners see the benifit of staying there. Unlike in other countries such as the Netherlands and Germany, the U.S. has very little tolerance of adult prostitution (often caused by poverty and or lack of a good education)... Instead of inprisoning women or men for prostitution, the U.S. should give these people proper training and help them find normal employment. Nontheless, the U.S. is a country where peoples's sexual morality is the same as in other western countries. A certain percentage of any population will have the need to seek the services of a prostitute. This is a fact of life! People are sexual beings. Would it not make mare sense that someone is satisfied than if they were to rape another person? We are all prostitutes whenever we compromise our values (eg. workplace) in order to make financial or other gains. The problem is not prostition as such, but the factors which cause someone to be in such a dire financial state. I am not an America basher. Instead, I would like to see the citizens wake up to reality. Travel to Europe, Canada, NZ, Australia and become educated. By the way, I have been doing that for the past 19 years (born in California, living in Europe for 19 years). |
tel 2nd August 2005 |
It's really just as bad everywhere, Africa is battling again against poverty, South America is battling against drugs. America is battling against terrorism. Every continent there is going to be a certain amount of fear and crime. The US is just as bad as the rest of the world. |
Hunter 2nd August 2005 |
It's funny that so many of the major crimes don't have per capita... Looking at the grand total doesn't tell you anything, but per capita does. And no one has commented on that... According to other sources (like INSS and so on), we have the highest murder rate per capita.
Our rate is 730 per 100,000 while Russia's is 690. And our apprehension rate is lower than Russia's as well. India's murder rate per 100,000 is 24. And within a decade while other countries' incarceration rates were decreasing (but not the percentage of apprehension), ours doubled.
Our divorce rate is also disgustingly high along with one out of three children being born out of wedlock.
The United States is the most dangerous, developed country. |
Whatever 31st July 2005 |
I like how a lot of the numbers are absolute numbers instead of per capita statistics. That really distorts the rankings. This site should have both per capita percentages and absolute values side by side and do the rankings.
Oh, and the thing about 5% of the population being charged with something every year . . . it's the same 5% every year. Called "repeat offenders." If they are felonies, we start putting them away forever if they repeat.
Prisons are so full due to drug crimes. We don't give the death penalty to drug dealers, unlike Thailand or Saudi Arabia, so we can't thin the numbers out.
America unsafe? There is a car in my parking lot that has its keys in the trunk key lock for two days. This complex has hundreds of people and people can come in and out pretty much at will. No one has stolen it yet. Seems pretty safe to me.

You all talk a lot, but you don't seem to know much about facts. The United States Government, has this country so blind. The poverty level with no running water or Electricity. Half of our prison system are Marijuana related charges, that the Mayor of New York ran a six year test to tell if you smoke pot for 6 years all day you may get bronchitis. No cancer, no liver damage, no heart damage. But they legalized alcohol that not only kills the body, but drinking and driving kills innocent children.Prostitution, they are still locking men and women up for having money put in their hand for companionship, but you can wine and dine them to sleep with them and that is o:k. One of our men came back from Iraq and said on national tv that he refused to go back over there and kill more innocent women and kids. That they are no threat to us and never was. Mr Bush is a very greedy man. He is building a pipeline from Texas through their country and instead of making some kind of agreement with them, He rather kill them and take their land. I m not a prostitute, nor a pot smoker. I've always believed in Jesus Christ and He told me not to be a follower, but to have a mind of my on and ask question to form my own opinion about things. I am a very happily married female. I have smoked pot when I was younger as well as alcohol. I do still smoke cigarettes. But research your theories before forming your opinion, because you just may mislead or misguide some weak mind. Don't listen to the government and take it as an oath. Go on line and search Poverty, Inflation, Bio fuel, that is a good one. Mr. Bush is so greedy all we need is Diesel engine cars.Bio fuel is oil that will run a car, with out the Pollution, and put the farmers back to work full force. Some of the crime statistics given here are not linked to the per-capita rankings.
Per-capita statistics may give the wrong impression that the US is a dangerous place. The problem is that most violent crimes are in inner-city neighborhoods basically criminals shooting each other hence the black-on-black tag. |

I am startled by all the comments that people seem to be infering that the US is dangerous. The anti-American ignorance is awful. First, the US is much more populous than the Western European countries some people are comparing to, thus you must expect a high overall number of crimes. Second, it shows that there is a very reliable police force which people are willing to report crimes. Most obviously, just look at the perception of safety stats. US ranks higher than most European Countries. This is the "nation of fear and hatred" you seem to have come to believe the US is?
Come on - let's be open-minded and stop spreading ignorance. |

The world in general is dangerous. After visiting Nicaragua and Mexico last year, I found that the jails are as full as those in America despite the terrible conditions that exist in those prisons. This is even compounded by the fact that vigilante justice is more popular than regular law enforcement globally. |

I agree about Columbia being the worst place to live. No one has anything so poverty prevails causing crime. In Columbia 10% of the population own 90% of the wealth!! |
Rob Young 5th June 2005 |
This is REALLY interesting, i think that the levels of crime, comparing Western Europe (where i am,UK) to the US, is roughly the same. The only difference is Americans seem to be more afraid of crime, hence gated communities, the right to bare arms and the huge expenditure you allocate to your security services. I also believe that the crime in the States is more violent, mainly due to guns. So I have to agree, I would say north America and western Europe are the safest places to be. |
