For all of the ashamed Americans, this is a representative government so we get what we ask for. If your ashamed then get involved vote, run for office, volunteer do something other than complain. I love America its not perfect, but I love the the United States of America and my plan is to do everything I can as an individual to get our oil consumption down. I am a proactive citizen. And for everyone else well if you don't like the US than stay home in your respective country and do everything you can to promote your home that is why you live their. And by the way I like the website very informative given the complexity of all the issues.

It is easy to blame all of our problems on our current president but the real blame for the failed energy policy in the United States came more than 30 years ago.

Up until 1973 oil was cheap and plentiful. In 1973 the oil producing countries formed OPEC and they elected to reduce production and drive up prices which they did. Oil went from $2.50/barrel to $12/barrel. All the European countries then placed very high taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel making prices even higher and forcing their citizens to buy small fuel efficient cars. They also built very efficient mass transit systems. The people there built smaller more energy efficient houses. Gasoline prices in Europe today are between $8 and $10 per gallon.

The US has been hooked on cheap energy just like an addict is hooked on drugs. It is crazy to blame our current president or any one person for the failing of the entire country over many years. Even with the high prices of gasoline and other fuels today I see very little change in what people do. I hear lots of talk about about buying hybrid cars but are people driving less? Do you drive less miles? Do you turn your heat down to 60 degrees in the winter. What are you doing to save energy?

The best way to solve the energy problems in the US is to pass enormous taxes on top of the already high cost of gasoline, natural gas and coal. This would force Americans to conserve energy and it is what we need to do but then people would just blame the president or congress for the high taxes.

It would also be good if you could convince China and India to consume less energy because they are the ones that have driven world demand for oil higher than the supply. The USA curently consumes 25% of the worlds energy and we produce only about 8%, the rest has to be imported.

The price of crude is brought on by the greed of the oil industry. The may say that it's OPEC but they are using that as an excuse. OPEC can see what kind of profits the industry is making so that just increase the price to take some of the profit. Why shouldn't they, the oil industry doesn't care about the people and how they are hurting them.

The way to stop it is for the United States Government to cancel all oil leases with the oil Industry and the government should take over the wells and the oil industry would have to buy the oil from our government. Then our government would control the price and could effect OPEC's price. As long as the oil industry has the oil leases they control how much we pay for gas. Also by doing this the government could reduce our federal taxes by the revenue that they take with the old sales. They could also use some of the revenue to help fund a nationwide health care plan.

Kent Arnold,

Let's just ask America to turn it down by 20%. See how far that goes. The problem is much more complex than your simple calculations. Stop blaming the government in a Free Market Enterprise. Don't you want LESS government in your decisions? PSA's are a form of bias and ultimately goes against American views. Deeply educate yourself in what you're talking about before you say it.

Because the government wants us to nurse the cheaper nipple as long as possible. =(

Dealing with the consequences afterwards is the way of the world.

Has anybody given any consideration to conservation energy in the U.S. Looks like if we cut down on oil usage by 20% than that would cut our comsumption by 4 million barrels a day...which is more than Iran produces daily...and would throw World Oil prices into a spin...Anybody got any idea why the goverment of the US does not use moral suasion by Public Service Announcements to promote conservation...
