First I met Bettina on 18th August 2002 in UNHCR OCM Kabul where I have been signing my first contract with UNHCR Field Office Ghazni as a Data Processing Clerk. Bettina was my direct supervisor. She was well manner and cooperative supervisor. I learnt many things from her and she really loved me. On 16th November 2003 at 0750hrs when the Driver picked me from my home on the way to the office we stopped in the UNHCR Guesthouse and collected her. On the way she asked me that I have to visit Khashek village where some new family returnees returned. I told her that I am working on DoRR's Documents (Department of Refugees and Returnees) that Jeddy who was the head of UNHCR FO Ghazni has given me to finish it soon as it was so urgent. she asked me that I have to talk with Jeddy to go with her for area monitoring to make some interviews. at 1000hrs I went to Jeddy's office and stated that Bettina is going to visit Kashak village and she asked me to join her, Jeddy said NO i have to work on DoRR's documents as that is so urgent. I went to her office and told her that Jeddy said i have to work on DoRR's document you should take someone else with you. She became angry and said in the load voice that "I HAVE WORK I DON'T HAVE GAME" I left her office. 10mnts later she came again to my office and asked Ali who was setting next to me and asked Ali to prepare for area monitoring in Khashel village. Bettina, Ali and Salaam the driver left the office and first they went to the National Bank Office to meet the head of National Bank who was originally from Malistan about some security situation in Malistan because Bettina had plan to visit Malistan on 17th November 2003. The head of National Bank was not present in the office then Bettina directed the driver towards the Khashek village. They turned left and about to leave the crowded bazaar which is called Bazazy that a motorbike who was chasing them came close to the window where she was sitting shot her. The predators fired 6 bullets in the UNHCR vehicle and three of the bullets hit her, two was hit the driver's and one was missed. Ali was in the back seat and he hidden himself in the small narrow between front and back seats. The UNHCR car was driven by local people who were close to the scenes and Bettina was dead on the way to the hospital. After shooting the predators were trying to escape and people who were present there surrounded and arrested them and later on they handed over to the local security forces. At 1040hrs I heard voice of Ali in the VHF where he was calling that they shot on our vehicle and killed Bettina. I was next to Jeddy’s office and run to his office I saw him that he was talking on the satellite phone and indicated me to leave him alone. Later the rest of my colleagues came out from their offices to inform Jeddy but he did not allow anybody to speak. One of my colleagues Sayed Aminullah, Admin Assistant he asked a driver to take him to the hospital as he said that he cannot wait for Jeddy. After few minutes he came out from his office and asked us what happened that everyone is running to my office. We reported the story that there gun shooting on our vehicle and Bettina might be injured. He also left the office with Eng. Mahmood, Field Assistant.
Bettina was working as a Associate Protection Officer for UNHCR FO Ghazni and she had good and close relation with the Governor of Ghazni Haji Assadullah Khalid who became later the governor of Kandahar and now he is Minister for Parlumentary. the anty government elements thought that Bettina is good advisor of Khalid. Indeed she was always assisting him how to attract the attention of international community’s also she arranged a visit mission for Ghazni delegation to France where she became more pupolar in Ghazni. Also i should mention that during year 2003, the security situation was much better and we could travel in all part of the Ghazni province. Why Bettina was killed by the Taliban? I have two answers.
1. I think when she became papolar in Gazni due to her work and close relation with Haji Assadullah Khalid the governor of Ghazni the Anti government elements and also some other parties who had compotation wanted to kill her in order to make the governor weak.
2. My second answer is a mystery that i cannot mention it here..... |
