Winton Bell (Christchurch, New Zealand) 13th May 2008 |
I have some Scottish delima about our Winton family. They assisted in battle of Culloden
in support of Bonny Prince Charlie.
The family left Ardersier, to trek south to the lowlands living near Edinburgh, and sailed on the Philip Laing on December, 1848.
Also they captured the shield in a battle.
With poor harvests and economy they were influenced to join Thomas Burns in his scheme for settlement at Potobello, on the Otago Heads, New Zealand. They decided to join the scheme William Winton became the ships carpenter, and he erected an old sail, to catch fresh water in the tropics.
The Philip Laing sailed in December, 1848.
They took up a farm at Portobello, Dunedin, New Zealand.
Among the stock brought with them was a cow, and Clydesdale horses, and farm impliments.
Anyone with addition material on migration of people welcomed. bye. |
