How to Recover the Oil in the Gulf Oil Disaster
I can’t understand why the DEP or BP can’t solve the oil slick problem in the Gulf of Mexico.
I will describe a simple inexpensive way to not only clean up the oil but also to recover it.
The system is based on the idea that oil floats to the top.
So you send and ships with multiple suction hoses. The suction end of the hose would be held at the surface of the water by buoys. This way the hose would suck in liquid (oil and salt water) from the surface of the sea.
A refinement of this is possible - You could have a large round tub held at the surface by buoys. The top layer of water would flow over the edge it the tub from where it wound be pumped.
The water would be pumped into tanks that would be similar to swimming pools on an cruise ship. The sucked in liquid fill up the pool. The oil goes to the top.
BUT this time you suck salt water from a drain in the bottom of the pool. More and more mixed water comes in. Salt water goes out. Oil in the top layer stays in the pool.
Gradually the top layer is more and more oil. When the top oil layer is at the 90% level suck it into a tanker and take it away for further processing to eliminate the salt water. That should be too hard.
There could be many refinements and improvements on this.
You could create a floating barrier in the shape of a “V.”
Pull the V shaped forward and the oil will be concentrated at the inside point of the V. THAT is where you would place the end of the suction hose. You would get a higher concentration of oil in the pumped fluid in that way.
This answer is so simple that even a child could do it.
For my part I would be happy to just help the environment, the economy, the country and the people of the Gulf. But if you want, you could send me ½ percent of the money saved. If I get a lot of money, I would give it away to charity anyway. |

The Oil Spill, Dear Governor Jindal Please consider doing what the British did during World War II when they needed to extract more British soldiers than the Navy could move by themselves, they accepted the help of many thousands of fisherman and other boat owners and together they moved almost 400,000 men from danger and saved the British Army to fight another day. We need all the help we can get. This could impact your political career if you were the forerunner of this idea.

As a tax payer it seems to me we should take what ever we can get from the stimulus package since as tax payers, we, our children, and grand children are going to be paying for this bill weather we get funds from it or not. |
