FACTOID # 74: More than a third of the time, Icelanders don't show up for work. Perhaps that's why they're the world's happiest nation.

COMMENTARY

Desna Atkins (Gosford NSW Australia)
12th February 2009
Dear sirs
Can you please help me ?

I am trying to locate my father, or more likely any record of him and I have the following information:
My mother never revealed my father's name and after my birth married - her husband, Redver Brierley, was registered as my father on my birth certificate, but he is not my biological father AND at age 98 is unable to shed any light on who my father was AND has always said that my mother never told him
My mother came from and lived in Manchester, where she married my Dad who has cared for me as a daughter throughout my life
Manchester is a city where there were wartime airbases, or other wartime airbases were nearby
My mother told my sisters and I that my father was a Polish "paratrooper" or airman, who was shot down over France
My first name is Desna and there is a Polish river by that name, which has its origins in the Ukraine, where the name means - RIGHT
I was born 25 March 1945 so my biological father would have to have been around in around June 1944
My mother's name at that time was Joyce Irrgang and she married Redver Brierley before migrating to Australia in 1952 - we are a family of 5 girls and 2 boys living in Victoria, NSW and Queensland and Dad lives in Mooroopna, next door to Shepparton in Victoria in the "Fruit Bowl" of Australia. Dad remarried some time after Mum's death from breast cancer some 25 years ago. Dad is a proud veteran sailor who came to Australia as the first male nurse in a hospital in australia - he also came out with a role in the Salvation Army in which church we were all brought up.
My married name is Atkins and my husband John and I live near Gosford on the lovely Central Coast of NSW Australia, just 80 minutes by train North of Sydney - we live in an idyllic setting ... in retirement.
I hope that with this little information you may be able to help me trace my biological Dad, or refer me to others who may be able to assist me ?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely

Desna Atkins
