Transcendentalism is an extermely important philosophy because it fuelled two of the great revolutions on the 20th Century. First in India, whence parts of transcendentalist thinking foung roots, Gandhi used Emerson's writings to formulate his policy of "passive resistance." Passive non-violence brought the third most powerful military in the world to its knees driving Great Britain out of India for good.
Later, in the 1960s Martin Luther King used Gandhi's example in formulating his policy of "passive non-violence."
This peaceful policy brought American apartheid-- segregation-- to its knees, with the help of television. It isan ironic vindication of the much maligned Transcendentalist movement that it literally transcended culture and continent to liberate the United States from the dark heart of "separate but unequal" the ugly remnants of the segregation, the lingering blight of slavery which has been called one of our national sins. |
