The English 1958 production of 'West Side Story' starred Don McKay as Tony, not David Holliday. David understudied and played Gladhand, the guy who runs the dance at the gym.
Other Jets included Tony Mordente (A-rab), Ed Verso(Baby John)and David Bean (Big Deal), who appeared in the film version as Action,Juano and Tiger, and Gary Cockrell (Diesel), who stayed on in London, played the lead opposite Italian actress Isa Miranda in Tennessee William's 'Orpheus Descending' and had a successful career in UK films and TV for many years. Jet girl Velma was played by Susan Watson who returned to Broadway to create the role of Kim MacAfee in 'Bye Bye Birdie'and had a continuing Broadway career.
Sharks included Don Percassi (Luis) who was in the original cast of 'A Chorus Line' in 1975 and married Sandy Duncan, and Leo Kharibian (Anxious)who stayed on in England and became a famous theatre/TV choreographer. Shark Girl Teresita was played by Yvonne Othon, who was also in the film version.
The 1962 European tour of the UK company also toured in Britain with Carole Gray, the co-star of 'The Young Ones' with Cliff Richard in 1961. |
