Hello,
I remember my father owning a Dargie painting that my brother now owns.It is a still life.A vase of pink/apricot poppies with one white one. My father told me the story of having this painting framed, the people who did the framing (a place in inner Melbourne that is all I know)put the painting in the window of their business. Apprantly so the story goes Sir William saw same and offered my father if he would give it back, paint a portrait of any family member my father chose. He told my father that it was one of his very early works, the offer was refused and that painting was part of my growing up years.
How my father came by it is as follows.Dad owned a large furniture removal & storage company 30ies/50iesThe painting was part of an unpaid storage debt,it came to my fathers attention when he noticed that it was being used in a storehouse as a dust pan the workers would sweep the floor and use the painting to collect the dirt.Dad rescued it just because he liked the painting and sent it to be cleaned and framed,so there you go maybe his family would like to hear that story just abit of history. Thankyou babette Sloan |
