Meli 17th August 2005	Oh my God as a Kiwi I never knew we had such a high rape rate.... Althugh in a lot of countries its never reported so it wouldn't really be but that's terrible!
Alex 15th February 2006	It's interesting that an otherwise fairly peaceful, non-violent country (where gender equality is generally quite good too) currently is #1 for rape victims. I wonder if this is a true reflection of the situation or if it's due to a higher proportion of rapes being reported. Japan, where I live now, is supposedly has one of the lowest rates in the world for rape victims, but it's something that people don't talk about or report here. Anecdotal evidence and newspaper surveys suggest the problem is much bigger than the statistics suggest for Japan. I wonder what the situation is for other countries? (actual rape is always going to be much higher than reported rape in some societies)
Andrew (Minnesota) 22nd January 2007	Why Austria is so high: Austria has a comparitavely high rate of reported rape due in a large part to the number of women raped by Russian soldiers during their short period of occupation, as well as rape survivors who were expelled from formerly german minority/majority areas further to the east. Germany never officialy recorded these crimes, mainly because they occured in the eastern occupied areas, which became the DDR (east Germany). As they weree a puppet government they covered this up. Austria is the only country which allowed women to officially report these crimes. Similiar rapes also occured on a large scale in all areas occupied by the Russian army. Estonia, Poland, Lithuania however these were also puppet governments of the Soviet Union. When stalin was asked by his biographer to comment on all of these rapes he called them "a trifle."
