they don't speak up or don't want to fight for the freedom of their kids.At the end of the day when it all said and done it is clear that it is the carelessness and ignorance of the people that keeps the world the way it is. |

But wait! United States and Mexico have to be on the list! After all my uber republican talking heads told me that all illegal immigrants are dangerous and that all they do is kidnap and murder! So how can we not be on the list! (Sarcasm is a virtue - illegal immigrants might harm the economy and some social programs, but physically they're probably less likely to hurt or kidnap you than the average Joe next door.) |

SA is not the dream 3rd August 2010 |
Well I live in South Africa and yes we seem to be ranked the highest in terms of crimes such as rape, murders and robberies, but the stats should be much higher than what is portrayed here. Every week i hear of people being murdered and raped. So to have stats of 1 in 1000 persons are murdered is so untrue. Many people do not report the crimes to police and many a time the police conveniently "lose" the dockets. This has personally happened to myself and family members. In this country its a man for himself, the police themselves are so corrupt, I would never go to a policeman for help, I would rather call my own brother. Yes we need to be positive and say good things about this country and all but how about these stats, in the 25 years that i have been on this earth, i have had 10 house breakings, 2 near hijackings (which has left me terrified), my own brother was nearly killed by four men after his car broke down on the side of the road, my husband has had 4 house breakings (this was before we got married), my husband was held at knife point twice in his life, my younger brother was robbed at knife point while walking in the busy city centre. Today i live in constant fear of being raped and killed. People know that the police will not lock them up and even if they do they will in any case go scott free. I could write down a list of each and every family member of mine (cousins and aunts and uncles) who have been a victim of crime in this country from hijackings, to smash and grabs, to robbery, to armed robbery, hit and runs to murders! The list is just too long. When someone goes missing there is 1% chance they will be found alive, this is the true reality. To live in SA and survive, you need to be extremely vigilant, do not walk with your cell phones or valuables out in the open, you are sure target. When you driving, time robots, so that you hardly ever get a red one, keep your car doors locked and never have your handbag on ur seat. Never think if you are in a busy area nothing will happen, because people do not stop to help, people have this attitude of "do not get involved", which is understandable since you will only get killed. If you are in an emergency, NEVER EVER phone the police, they will only rock up when you are dead, instead always have a number of a loved-one whom you know will come to your help immediately, i have my list of people to call. Lastly you may think that maybe i am from a poor community where poverty is rife, but this is not the case, i come from a middle-income home. Both myself and my husband are educated and today are quite well-off and live in a very decent suburb in South Africa! |

S_Pato (Honduras) 7th July 2010 |
I'm totally amazed and surprised of not seeing Honduras on this chart, it is my belief that the number of kidnappings that rae taking place in Honduras it might be to big to figure on this chart... I suggest the editors to give attention to this data, since on the latest years the number of crimes related to poverty in honduras, and most specifically the crimes of kidnappings has grown over three figure numbers. |

Check out this article for a good account of estranged parents taking children without their partner's permission http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/aug/09/children-abduction-kidnapping-uk-data
I have used this data in class and my students are always surprised to see UK at top of the list. Estranged parents only seem to account for about 10~15% of the figures (i.e.500 cases). My other belief is that it is the way that the data is collected in the UK. Abduction and Kidnapping seems to be counted as the same thing in UK whereas in many countries the two are counted as separate crimes. Also as the issue of crime reportage must come in to play. In UK in most cases people don't fear for their lives if they report a kidnapping meaning reportage rates will be much higher than in, say, Mexico. |
In Mexico 14th June 2010 |
Surprised Mexico isn't on the list, though a lot of kidnappings in Mexico are either not reported (when actual kidnaps w/ransom demand) or reported and classified as armed robbery (known as the express kidnap). |
Jess 10th May 2010 |
I think this needs a lot more info. Like if the kidanpping are in fact decreasing or increasing; that would be very helpful. And yup, i agree...are these kidnappings per day, week, month, year? |
_statistics_worthless 9th April 2010 |
Here is a list with the countries with the largest populations. In fact these countries make up 62.15% of the total population of the world.
China = 1,338,000,000 people
India = 1,179,322,000 people
US = 309,029,000 people
Mexico = 107,550,697 people
Pakistan = 169,189,000 people
Brazil = 192,753,000 people
Russia = 141,927,297 people
Nigeria = 154,729,000 people
Indonesia = 231,369,500 people
Philippines = 92,226,600 people
Ethiopia = 79,221,000 people
Bangladesh = 162,221,000 people
Vietnam = 85,789,573 people
I find it hard to believe that these countries have no kidnappings... |
Dale Thomas 8th April 2010 |
And Colombia?
Here in Costa Rica there was a nasty kidnapping in late March 2010. The police became aware only after the ransom had been paid. The young man (19) spent almost a week with his hands tied, attending to his body functions without being able to remove his garments. The newspaper said he had been held in a cave. (It seems more likely he was in a hole dug by his kidnappers.) The kidnappers were Costa Ricans and Colombians. The police it was common for the families of victims not to cooperate with authorities, and cooperation was not necessary to solve the case.
A friend present when the story of the kidnapping was told to us said that a few years ago he was courted by a company in Mexico City. During the meetings and interviews in Mexico City, a child of one of the company execs was kidnapped. When negotiations slowed, the family was told where it would find a package containing the child“s finger. The friend decided not to take the job and move to Mexico... |

Darla (Canada) 15th November 2009 |
The high number of kidnappings reported for Canada surprised me until I thought about it. In Canada, the abduction of a child by the "non-custodial" parent is reported as a kidnapping (not a domestic or custodial dispute). Occaisionally a divorced parent will pick up their child for visitation and go to the other side of the country with no intension of returning the child. It is then reported as a kidnapping to prompt immediate action by the police in that jurisdiction to apprehend the parent and return the child. |

First of all people never get kidnapped in the good old U.S. of A.?
Secondly, the Canadian government must be pretty good at controlling the local and national Canadian media. I have rarely seen or heard of kidnapping cases in the news. Since Canada is *THIRD?!?* in the world in kidnappings, I should be hearing reports every single day while watching the news.
Seriously... even moving the decimal place would STILL made it an absurdly high amount. |
Georgios Georgopoulos (Greece) 2nd March 2009 |
The recent EXPLOSION of kidnappings in GREECE has gone unreported. Greece has had some major incidents with huge ransoms paid foolishly. Two recent examples, MILONAS and PANAGOPOULOS, will cause a surge of abductions in Greece as the ransoms paid were among the highest in the world. In the Pericles Panagopoulos case, it was reported that his wife ignored all advice by the police and paid a record $40 m ransom! A much discussed Hollywood-style prison escape by Paleokostas, who was linked to the Millions abduction case, was reported to be linked also to the Panagopoulos case.
Over 25 abduction cases were reported in Greece for 2008 placing Greece on #22 worldwide if the above list is correct. |

I personally think that Brazil should be higher on the list if not no.1 then atleast no.2 because I am interested in Brazil and I saw a documentary about kidnappings in Brazil a while back on PBS and they had experts that talked about how they kidnap poor and wealthy people all the same and even kidnap soccer players mothers that have garnered public attention.All brazilians are terrified about the kidnapping threats and cant even dress up too well for the grocery store because they will be targeted as having money and they will follow them around from then on and wait for there turn to snatch the person.They have 2 ways of kidnapping people 1)They take you and make you have to keep going to an ATM until you drain your account and if there satisfied with the amount they will release you unharmed but if not then they call your family for more money.2)They snatch you and hold you captive and tell your family if they want to see you alive they will pay like 1 million dollars ( which to them in their country is a lot) or they will kill you and first they make threats that they sometimes,ake true by cutting your hair, a finger,or even a whole hand if they dont get what they want quick enough.The wealthy are targets more so then even american celebrities and have to have bullet proof cars and and body guard for themselves and there kids around the clock and have security and barriers surronding there homes.It is quit sad for such a naturally beautiful country people must live in fear and that wouldnt have to be if the government did their jobs properly and looked after their people that put them into office in the first place.Ever 5 seconds someone is kidnapped in Brazil. |

Brazil is definitelly the most dangerous country i n the world by far, even if compared with Colobia, Iraq and other countries facing war. Brazilian authorities does't inform the facts to the international comunity to avoid the negative effects on tourism and investments. But here they are:
Kidnapings: 512????? HUGE BS!!!! These are only the "traditional" kidnapings...with long term negotiations and captivity. To avoid dangerous and complicated operations, the criminals are practicing the so called "flash kidnapings...in general carjackings where the victim is held on captivity up to 2 days while the crimninals empty their accounts at the ATMs.
Only in Sao Paulo City, 480 cases were registered in April/2006. Now...consider the State of Sao Paulo, Rio...the whole country. Do the math and for you and your family's sake cancel your vacation!!!! Or you can take your chances to die like the Potuguese tourist murdered today (Aug/14/06) in Rio.
Read about in www.folha.com.br
Violent deaths/murders statistics: Again....the numbers wasn't spread to the world, but the body count were up to 43,000/year in 2005. Yesterday, the big news was: "18 dead in Iraq". In Brazil's today's numbers, exactly 24 for hours from now, almost 150 people will lose their lifes in violent crimes..EVERY DAY!!!! tic toc, tic ,toc...and i'm not includding traffic related deaths.
So please....update your statiscs ASAP. |

Please let me know how Nation Master came up with such a figure on kidnappings in Mexico. This is VERY IMPORTANT to me and those whose live here.
I have a monthly column here: www.solutionsabroad.com by the name of Security Corner. All voluntary work to support the International Community. We know many crimes are not reported, as in many other parts of the world.
In 2004 Mexico City PD -by far one of the largest places on this planet, the size, in population, of Australia- reported a total of 65 (sixty five) documented cases. If victims of crime do not file -per their own decision- police reports, how can these be valid?
Please let me know how this figure came about: 1,269 kidnappings? Any sources of information -other than private security firms - as they tend to inflate these for their own benefit to sell their services would be beneficial. Statistics used by official sources (State Department, CIA, etc.) have been questioned in the past. Please check this Site: http://narcosphere.narconews.com/story/2005/7/26/203741/897
Your assistance in this matter will be appreciated.

Yes, Trinidad and Tobago should be very high, probably top 3 on this list. It's very sad to be living here in fear of knowing that your own Prime Minister doesn't take considerable action about the situation. Maybe because none of his family has been victimized under his leadership, or maybe its because he is a "good friend" with the leader of the #1 group in this country that held it in a coup 15yrs ago, the Jaamat-al-Muslimen |

I'm from Colombia but i got adopted when I was three months old and I must say that it really breaks my heart to see how so many of my countrymen are suffering. I now live in Denmark and through this site I've actually become more thankful to my adoption parents and the orphanage "Los Piscingos". But I can't stop thinking about my biological mother Maria and my older brother Juan. I prey for them every day but just wondering if there's anyone who knows a website or a place where I can find some informations? I've only got their names, my father's and the surname. They might very well be dead but just can't stop hoping. Please help me.
