This is extremely inaccurate. In 2010 there were over 12,000 murders in the US, and there's no way they'd get pushed off this list. |

The numbers shown appear very low. Perhaps many countries do not report as homicides the victims of the state violence. Yet police may kill as much as "ordinary" criminals".
Brazilian statistics, totally omitted above, report 47 707 homicides in 2007 and show decline since the peak of 51 043 recorded in 2003. The Rio de Janeiro statistics report close to 6000 homicides per year, including about 20% of persons shot by the police. |

These stats are from 2002. According to Foreign Policy, Venezuela recorded 19,000 murders in 2009. I would hope they didn't double in one year. Then again, as Chavez' grip gets slippery his sanction for gang violence against the opposition becomes more blatant. |

Men... Mexico is becoming a total war zone... everyday we cope with drug violence, for example, decapitated people in front of police headquarters, drug dealers dissolved on acid, hand grenades exploiting on the streets, and so far we can count thousands of murders, every newspaper releases their count, an average of 20 to 30 drug related murders for a total of between 19,000 and 22,000 since the drugs war initiated, and just that, they exclude the rest of murders, also the violence on the streets has grown the the limit, I've always seen the African conflicts with surprise, you know, the things you thing never will be next to your door. But when you read the news about a group of criminals found death and mutilated with their own genitals in their mouths, you don't know what to do to heal your own nation from this corruption and cancer |
Kathy 22nd April 2010 |
It would be nice to see who is doing the murdering and who they are murdering. It is my understanding that 90% of the offenders are male but at least most of those they murder are male also. If males want to kill other males that is fine with me but they need to leave women and children alone. |

Brazil and China never seem to release their information. Are their crime rates that high? Probably. Rogue politicians hording and abusing good land and people. Who does letting crime continue benefit the most? Politicians. It creates a smoke screen over the people who rush to safeguard and comfort themselves sacrificing their rights in the process, leaving politicians (who are surrounded by bodyguards) to hoard and steal everyone else's share of the country's bounty. |

Andy 2nd December 2009 |
Something that hasn't been mentioned but should be factored in is the 'type'of murder involved. For example ,in places like Jamaica and Colombia, murders are almost always related to the drug trade. It doesn't really give you as a member of the public a true idea of how safe they would be from day to day. Many Jamaicans will tell you if you avoid Kingston you will be very safe. |
vp 1st December 2009 |
put this in ratio to total population. crime rate matters more. |
Reader 19th November 2009 |
I notice that people keep asking why China isn't on the list. China actual has a very low murder rate. Gun ownership is very low. civilian handgun ownership is 100% illegal, and since there is almost no hunting for sport rifle and shotgun ownership is very low, too. Knife carrying is also very low.
This means that if a Chinese person gets into a fight or robs somebody, there is little chance of somebody actually being killed.
This is why China is so low down the list. Victims of crime and violence usually survive with just a few cuts and bruises. |
Chandra 18th November 2009 |

India is having second largest population in the world is ranked top in the murders list cos, this country, where a intentional homicide is committed the accussed is fined with death penality, that is why it is ranking so high, in addition to this, China is Country which is having largest population in the world, is not at all mentioned here, if it is given it will be very beneficial to all. Russia is second in the list cos, in this country military offences are dealt very severly and even result with death penality. And one more country is missing that is BRAZIL, where the rate of offence is pity high compared to the top two countries. |

Guys, in case you didn't notice these are 2002 figures. No need to skew the stats by citing more recent figures not unless you're going to enumerate the data for the rest of the world. I guess we'll just have to wait for the UN to publish more recent data for comparison's sake and to get a better perspective of crime in relation to other countries. |

Trinidad and Tobago has reach a record high of 500 and might pass this mark. I live here in the USA and i am scared to go back to Trinidad cause i might get kill. When i was in my teen i was a victim of sexual abuse, me and about 12 teenager boys, went to take a swim in a pond there it happen in front of them all, i still feel the pain, the police never did anything to protect me. Trinidad must stop the sex predictors from praying on little boys. |

I would like to know, Why Guatemala wasn't included in this kind of Index??? |
Harry Thomas (Jamaica) 13th September 2008 |
Back in the 1960's Jamaica was a peaceful democracy. Both the PNP and the JLP learnt that a sure and easy way to get to parliament was to use violent methods to intimidate voters.Matters were later complicated when the USA felt threatened by former Prime Minister Michael Manley's anti US rhetoric. He vowed to walk to the mountain top with Cuba's Fidel Castro. In 1976 we suddenly experienced the widespread presence of arms.In June just 2 days before my mother's funeral I experienced my first armed robbery.During the 1980 election my house was shot up.I am no politician. In 1986 I was again held up.In all cases the guns came through the hands of the politicians.I have since learnt and acquainted myself with all my assailants. Thanks to our Northern Neighbours.Still 'Jamaica,No Problem Man' |

Marco (USA) 3rd August 2008 |
Are these the number of murders recorded last year, or the no of murders so far this year? Or is it the no of murders over 2 years? please specify |
Mr Pakistani (Pakistan) 10th July 2008 |
REALIST your not being realistic. Look at the overall crime rate, you’ll see Pakistan is one of the lowest. Obviously a safe place to live. Also have you seen Kalam in Pakistan, it is voted as one of the most beautiful places on earth. In addition the Pakistani people are some of the healthiest people because of our fresh diet from a rich and fertile land. |
Mike (Switzerland) 20th June 2008 |
Jamaica is not on the list. With nearly 1500 murders in 2007 it should be one nearly on top of the list. |
Faisal (Pakistan) 11th June 2008 |
I want to comment on Mr/Ms. "Realest" from "everywhere". Pakistan is not listed in it because it is only the vested interests of some nations that project Pakistan's image as a bad place. Those who have lived in pakistan or have brains more than the size of a "pea", can filter out the wrong impressions and actually "see" whats going on around them. Pakistan is a very safe place, much safer than the so-called developed nations who have successfully hidden everything that goes on, from public eye. |
Crystal (Trinidad and Tobago) 10th June 2008 |
Something is seriously wrong here! These statistics are messed up. Having lived in Trinidad for the past 19 years I can honestly say we have a crime rate of 5 murders every 18 hrs. Where is Trinidad in the list? |
Chris Banzet (Cartersville, GA) 8th June 2008 |
Isn't it funny that CHINA isn't included here at all... Lord knows that it would certainly be near the top if there was truly an agency that reported ALL murders.. Government included. And when I was in South Korea in 1998 I know that North Korea would have also ranked up there pretty high as well, yet they too are not included in this chart!! |
Adil Ahsan (Saudi Arabia) 23rd February 2008 |
Yet!! According to the Times megazine Pakistan is the most dangerous country!! |
Mike (Florida) 28th November 2007 |
My wife is from Sao Paulo Brasil. We lived in Brasil for a couple years. I have US & Brasilian Citizenship. I can tell you first hand especially in the poor areas of Sao Paulo, Rio, and other major cities of Brasil that crime and murder is through the roof. I to wonder how Brasil failed to make the list. Something here is flawed!! |
Looking for Accuracy (Boston, MA) 14th November 2007 |
Every article I read says Jamaica has highest murder rate. I actually thought I stumbled on a gem here, but see that it is not up-to-date or accurate. |
Dev (UK) 19th August 2007 |
India had 37170 murders. Is this in one year, and for which year? How do I find out the year to which any statistic applies? |
John 13th April 2007 |
Alot of countries which have very high murder rates and which have alot of murders were not mentioned on the list.
Brazil has between 49,000 to 50,000 murders a year Honduras has over 7,000 murders a year El Salvador has over 6000 murders a year and Guatemala has over 5,000 murders a year and none of those countries were on the list.
This list is old and out of date and needs to be updated to include other countries and up to date statistics. |
Wutever (Canada) 8th February 2007 |
No, Pakistan is safer than alot of the countries. There are not as many murders as there used to be. It's gotten better. I agree with the South Africa thing though... |
Manuel (South Africa) 5th February 2007 |
Most probably South Africa would be topping this stats if it was up dated, with 18'000 murders in 2006.
If nothing happens very soon, how much murders will there be during 2010 world cup with so much easy targets (tourists) in the country??? |
keneth anderson (Cape Town) 2nd November 2006 |
2006 is the year for south africa, south africa was one of the very peacefull nations in the world country in 1996. know south africa is not a spot to go, crime is just like their is no police their. |

http://www.crimexposouthafrica.org/?q=node/247
Can you update your stats? |
Liz (Hamilton, New Zealand) 30th June 2006 |
Stop complaining about the countries which aren't listed. This info is from a UN Survey- not all countries are part of the UN and when you consider the sheer magnitude of info on this site it is not surprising that in some topics countries are left out! |
Derek (USA) 29th June 2006 |
I am totally outraged by the false statistics you are showing on your website.
I checked crime statistics for just two countries and this data is totally wrong e.g. number of murders in US in 2004 was 14,121 (www.fbi.gov) whereas this website is showing 12,658. For Poland they are showing 2,170 murders whereas polish police website (www.policja.pl/index.php?dzial=6&id=2) shows 980 murders for 2004 and 837 for 2005.
Where did they get this data? |
Realest (Everywhere) 7th June 2006 |
How come Pakistan is not included? One of the worst country in the world. |
Scott (New York) 17th April 2006 |
Brazil has consistently had ono of the largest numbers of murders in the world (53,242 in 2002). This list is obviously not all-inclusive and needs to be updated to at least include Brazil! |
Heheh 4th February 2006 |
That's a bit strange, Juan Pablo. I live in the UK and I know it's one of the safest places in the world. I've also been to Colombia and it's certainly one of the most dangerous outside of war - and far, far more dangerous than the UK. To say the UK is more dangerous is a nonsense. |
Juan Pablo 24th December 2005 |
Those statistics should be refreshed!!!
Colombia's changed, take a look into it, ask people who have come, i.e British people I know say it's by far (to them) safer being here than in their own countries, honestly, I've just been in u.s, but are their words, not mine. statistics, are very different than those you're showing, I know it has to be official, but there are statistics departments, even government n offices that can help you fixing 'em.
Thanks a lot |
Heheh 3rd December 2005 |
Brazil had 53,242 murders in 2002. Does anyone update these murder lists?? Just that it seems a little slow and there are numerous inaccuracies (inflated gun murder stats in South Africa and Thailand for example). |
Bobcat (England) 9th November 2005 |
Spandangle - You CAN view the murder rates per capita - just click the option to view "per capita" at the top of the table - Colombia, South Africa and Jamaica are in the top positions... |
Baz 1st August 2005 |
If crime stats are more indicators of willingness to report crime rather than actual crime - what do you people suggest as the best way to know how dangerous a place is? For example, S.Africa is rated as one of the most murderous countries is Africa - but clearly the countries in the midst of civil war and ethnic cleansing are worse off. What are your thoughts? |
Spandangle 7th July 2005 |
hmmm, it would be interesting to work these figures out per capita. South Africa and Colombia would have a huge murder rate and countries like Saudi Arabia would be right down at the bottom. |
Gamini Wijenayke 6th July 2005 |
Under "CRIME" Sri Lanka is not mentioned. Why? We Sri Lankans are worried that crime rate in this country is very high, so I was looking for a source of comparision.
Thanks |
Sarah Panayi 27th June 2005 |
I find it very strange that Sweden is not included in the statistics shown when selecting All EU Countries (covering the period 1998-2000) and category Crime/Murders. At the same time Hungary is represented with a figure of 2005 during the same period and during which period Hungary was not a member of the EU. |
Radoslaw 2nd March 2005 |
I believe that there is a mistake in the number of murders for Poland. The actual number of murders in 2000 was 1,269, according to the Polish Main Command of the Police. Other data here also seems to be based on this source and are generally accurate (I checked the number of rapes and robberies, which was given correctly). |
