It's funny because I felt very safe walking in the dark in big cities in Sweden when I was there more so than living in a smaller city in the US.

I'm a transplanted Canadian, and I find it very interesting how other Canadians I've met say they like Australia because there's so little crime. I find it baffling as I'm not so naive myself and I don't believe it at all (especially if you check out the crime stats on this site).
Perhaps this is media-driven. In a world where violent crime rates have been dropping, the media gives us a sense that the world is increasingly hostile and violent. Yes, the world is changing, but we need to have some kind of balance of opinion to figure things out for ourselves. We can't all check various studies and reports on the internet when we're so busy feeding, clothing, sheltering and entertaining ourselves. We should be able to rely on the news to actually report some news.

I have walked the streets in UK for over 25 years and have rarely felt unsafe. I have never seen a gun in public (other than occasionally at airports or outside the queens property). If the americans feel safer with murder weapons all around them then leave them to it

To FM: You've stated your conjecture that unrestricted access to guns would cause criminality to soar. Yet, the *facts* have indeed shown quite the opposite to be true, as exemplified above with regard to New Hampshire and Vermont. But I guess that to some people, cold hard reality ain't as convincing as true belief.

I live in New Hampshire in the US where everybody can get a gun. Our crime rate is among the lowest in the US, and our murder rate is THE lowest. A neighboring state, Vermont, where any adult can carry a concealed gun,has the lowest crime rate in the country. By contrast, in another neighboring state, Massachusetts, the crime rate is very high, but their gun laws are among the strictest.

Europe also has more policeman per capita. You may see a correllation between the fear the the cops per capita. I am rightly more fearful of government than individuals. Individuals rarely start wars.

True, but the population of the US is armed, that's why we're safer, is Aussie land, they don't have guns, the criminals do. That's why they feel more unsafe.

You'd think that with austrailias strict punishment system and low crime rate, that theirs would be higher.
