This data is not working today (there are no data displayed), but what I really want to see, anyway, is crimes BY police. I think that most people would be surprised to learn that police may commit MUCH more crime than the population at large... (however it is also true, and certainly true in the US, that such crimes are not charged or prosecuted, which will compromise the statistic badly). |

Thse statistics are meaningless as some countries have several types of Police force. For example, France has the Police Nationale (the number cited above), but they also have the Gendarmerie (c. 1000,000), plus the Police Municpale. The UK has one type of force. |

i thought these figures were astonishing to see that america crime rate was so high compared to uk and that means its all down to guns.Guns are over rated for many parts of the world everyone wants them but seeing the figures makes me not want to have one. |

Maybe it would make more sense to have a table of policemen per inhabitants.
Of course India has a lot of policemen. It is a huge country. |

Anik!
Police and detectives held about 840,000 jobs in 2002. About 81 percent were employed by local governments. State police agencies employed about 11 percent and various Federal agencies employed about 6 percent. A small proportion worked for educational services, rail transportation, and contract investigation and security services.

Hi Akshay
Police reforms? No matter what is done, the police are highly corrupted and it's very difficult to control 100 Million people. |
Akshay 14th June 2005 |
Whoops, India has the largest police force in the world AND the largest number of acquittals?! Shows how *urgently* we need police reforms in the country. |
