They are still a minority compared to the locals, 2. the countries they came from have lower crime rates. The real reason is that the countries on the top do not practice capital punishment. Even though one may think capital punishment is cruel, nevertheless it is has been proven effective and this statistic report proves that.

HOWEVER, statistics are merely a snap shot of the bigger picture and can only be used as a guideline. What the above shows is undeniable, there are too many rapes in the world, and there are many more unreported. Instead of debating why statistics are wrong, lets talk about what we can do? Any suggestions? I live in Brisbane Australia and a friend of mine emailed me today and told me she was raped. In Australia it will be considered as "date rape" which is very hard to convict in a court of law. This disgusts me. Her pride dignity and safety were taken away from her. Albert 24th January 2011	In certain cultures rape within marriage is recognised and in others it is not. Certain countries count any sexual act with a minor as rape. Certain Islamic countries allow men to marry girls as young as 11 years old. With definitions as to what actually constitutes rape differing so widely between countries and cultures it is diffcult to draw any conclusions from these statistics. Most people seem to just vent jaundiced 'point scoring' on racial, religious or cultural lines rather than addressing the real issues within their own communities.
yes 21st January 2011	Pretty bad South Africa being second since we aren't exactly the biggest country and since most of South Africas "previously disadvantaged" dont have the proper officials to complain to, so there's probably a lot more rapes than this (we are actually near the top of a lot of these lists)also Kathy's remark on males being the inferior race is pretty sexist and thoughts like that should be abolished since these are the type of thoughts that lead to rape in the first place.

Islamic "ways" and Qoranic law states that women are "mere clothes", "dirt", they are worth the same as purchased slaves. They see as sexual object. 5 weeks ago, while I was standing outside in the freezing winter weather and smoking Marlboro, I heard a teenage boy next door cursing at his mother by uttering "f" word. He said few times during the heated conversation. I could not bear to hear it anymore and be a witness to this disrespectful manner. I said to my wife; "how do you expect this teenage boy to respect women in general if he cannot even respect his mother?". My wife is Methodist and I am a Muslim. Gordon 5th January 2011	To be fair, Rape isn't an offence under Sharia or Islamic law. You're freely allowed to rape your wife or slaves because they belong to you. Also it is difficult to get a conviction under islamic law because a woman is only worth 1/4 of a man. This is why you don't see any islamic countries in the list, and if the non-islamic countries allowed raping too, then they would also not be in the list. Thankfully, they don't.

The more dictatorial and uncaring a country is, the less chance it has of reporting serious crimes like murder, burglary, rape, battery. The more caring and equal a society, the more likely the definition and reporting of rape will be accurate. The more matriarchal a country, the more feminism has taken hold, the more the definition of rape is skewed and statistics get meaningless again. For examples, rape in the USA includes consensual sex between minors and no prison rape (where the victim is almost always male) is included in statistics; in the UK the law doesn't even recognise male rape as rape (even though it accounts for around half of all rape) and the statistics between convictions and accusations is not distinguished; in India the man is always considered guilty even when he is the victim, so male rape never gets reported by the victim, only ever by the perpetrator.

Sanjana 16th October 2010	I do not agree with these statistics. Any woman living in India will tell you how badly the social structure of this country treats women. Whether in means of public transport, on roads, in educational institutions, workplaces, everywhere women have to face eve-teasing and humiliation. The society vindicates the victim of rape, specially in rural regions. In Rajasthan, widow burning (Sati), dowry deaths and Honour killings (specially in Haryana) are rampant. The victims of rape in many cases are abandoned by their families and pushed to fend for themselves. There have been cases when women went to report rape cases at police stations and were ravished by the policemen there. There is no "real" independence for women in this country. And all the advocates of Islam who have posted before me, let me say that your religion, in theory, preaches a lot of great morals, like any other religion. The only problem is that in today`s day and age, your religious leaders (imams and maulvis, qazis etc) are themselves preaching anti-humanitarian concepts. The deobandi school in India recently issued a fatwa saying that women should not be allowed to work in workplaces where men are working. Other infamous fatwas ban wearing skirts, leaving the household responsibilities and other nonsense which bars the very basic fundamental rights of a human being. 99% of muslim males I know( and I study at the National Islamic University,so I know a lot of them!) are adamant in their disrespect for and objectification of women. They feel women should stay in the houses, and if they step out, they better cover themselves up, or "suffer at our mercy" . And also may I know what are the great Islamic principles that the Taliban is propogating by chopping off women`s limbs and beating them naked on the road? is this the beauty of your religion? I am a research scholar on crimes against women, so I know what I am talking about.

All women in India are subjected to sexual harassment on a daily basis, whether on the roads, in local trains, buses, in educational institutions and workplaces. The Indian male is definitely the worst when it comes to accepting the dignity of a woman. And all you advocates of Islam who have posted below, please note that your religion`s theoretical preaching are widely acceptable, sometimes even wonderful...but in practice, all muslim men I know (and I study in the National Islamic University at New Delhi, so I know a lot if them!), are the worst when it comes to the treatment of women. They consider women as inferior beings, objects who should be shut up inside homes and never be allowed to even show their faces in society, forget about expressing their individuality or opinions. Even your imams and other clerics issue fatwas here saying women should stay at hme and take care of the household and shouldn`t even enter offices where men work. What do u think the young muslims of this country are learning when such slavery is endorsed by your very religious leaders? Amy+Becker 25th August 2010	Kathy that is good news that so many of the males in your office actually said they should execute rapist and that they should even be hung by their balls. I did think that was a bit odd so I asked about 50 of my male friends as well as about 30 women. Out of the 50, 45 males agreed that a rapist should die but I found only 35 who suggested using your (our) method. Out of the 30 women, 25 agreed with us. In a way, I am not surprised that so many males would want this because it is like having a bad apple in a fruit basket, the one will spoil all of the others and maybe these males realize that if we get rid of males like this, we can start calling them MEN again. Of course we may have to get rid of a lot of males for us to do that.

There is hope for us after all. Amy+Becker 21st August 2010	Many years ago, they use to execute rapist. Now that they do not, it seems rape has increased many times. Are they afraid of what would happen to the male population if all rapists were executed? How many more males would be executed if they included child molesters? However many males would disappear, it would only improve society to rid ourselves of this kind and remember, Russia lost half its male population and survived just fine. In fact, it did better as they found that women were able to do everything the males did and often they did it better. That alone shows that what Kathy said below is right on target.

I come from a family who originates from a communist country where almost all perceptions of facts are skewed and rights for women are much more minimized than people believe. Although the 'apparent' risk may seem to be higher for women in Westernized countries, I have to say that rape vs. no rights for women (in certain countries) are comparable misfortunes.

raja 18th June 2010	@Jason Dear in them days they use to marry in other families not for the sake of sex but to make the "mehram" which means a person who is allowed to come at someone's home at any time. it is an arab custom. and by the Ummul Momineen Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) got married to our Prophet (S.A.W) when she was 9 and she did not get her rukhsati done untill she was 13. Muhammad (S.A.W) and Ayesha (R.A.H)' father Abu Bakar (R.A.H) were great frends and they wanted to turn this frendship into relationship and at that time in arab it was a tradition to do that. i'm sure if you peep into to christien or jewish history of that time you will find the similer examples. In bukhari sharif when it says "right hand's posession" it does not means that you should rape everyone, it means that any woman who has no where to go and gets shelter of you, and you feed her and give her a place to live you can make a sexual relationship as long as she is willing to do so. mind you in islam a man is not allowed to even touch a woman if she does not allow him to touch, no matter if she is his wife or posession of the right hand. so even in modern time if i have a girl-friend whom i give food and shelter and i give her gits often, she becomes my right hand's posession, i can make a sexual relationship with her as long as she allows me to make one. please study more if you want. they say ignorance is better than less knowlege.

In Muslim countries which follow Sharia, women are punished for being raped. They are also punished for consensual sex if it is outside of wedlock. Muslim women are afraid to complain about being raped because the laws in their countries will only make their lives more miserable. So no, we do not need Islam in western countries. I do not care if a woman goes down the street naked, a male does not have the right to rape or attack her. A real MAN would offer his coat or otherwise help her to cover up and even if he was only wearing swim trunks, he would give them to her and be naked himself rather than to let a woman do so. Women are not "turned on" by naked males as males are to women so it would be safer for him until he can get some cloths. But to say "she deserved it" is wrong. I am in a country were crime is so rampant the norm here is a crime only recorded if they go to court, which excludes all rape, burglary and crimes against those who cann t aford to go to court. Rape is hardly ever recorded and is dealt with secretly. Everybody steals, all the way to the top of government, stealing is part of our way of life and is even celebrated, some don t even consider it a crime untill it is done to them. Kathy 27th May 2010	Trudy, it is not the US people who have a have a rapist attitude, it is the males who treat women as inferiors because they can get away with it. In reality, I think these males know that it is the male who is the inferior gender and if we taught our children from grade school up the reality of this fact, these boys would learn to treat women with respect and maybe someday males would learn that it is not a sign of weakness to admit they are the weaker sex and these males could seek help in the many areas they are weak in.

Wildcav 15th April 2010	To the idiots claiming that if countries were Muslim they would have no rapes. Look at Nigeria and Sudan. Both have large Muslim population, in the case of Sudan, Muslim militias are raping non-Muslim and Muslims alike to make the fall in line with a hard line Muslim president. Another example is a few weeks ago of a young girl, i believe she was 12 or 11 in Yemen. She was married and raped by her husband and died. Many underage girls are married and forced to have sex with a husband because if they don't they are told they are bad Muslims(I doubt the Quraan says they are, but when its so ingrained into psyche of a population through traditions they do not question it). Another problem with these stats are the simple fact that it is REPORTED rape. Many Muslim and Southeast Asian countries still teach that if you were raped you must have done something to deserve it(again, I do not read the Quraan, but I know Mohamed did not say its your fault if some crazy dude breaks into your house and beats you unconcious and rapes you for the simple fact he is nuts) Another fact is in many Western Countries a wife has right to say no to her husband when he wants sex. To the person who thinks that communism was the answer, in many countries like former Yugoslavia rape was either never reported or the police covered it up, corruption in most communist countries is rampant. A prime example would be in Guizhou when a 16 year old girl's body was found in the river. Immediately the police claimed she had committed suicide and refused to investigate further. The family was told by police don't even try to file a law suit there is not justice for you. When 500 middle school students tried to protest they were beaten, when the girls uncle was questioned by the police he was beaten. See a pattern here? My point in all of this is no one thing is gonna be a super fix. Muslim countries and Communist Countries both have these problems. To think other was is just Bass Ackwards. The best thing a country can do is to make it safe for victims to come forward, have a money spent on a competent and reliable police force, and an informed public who is willing to help combat a problem. In South Africa they have a problem with gang rapes because no one is telling the kids growing up that this is not proper behavior, they interviewed a group of kids and some of them were talking about they couldn't wait to get older to join a gang that was doing that.

It is almost always males that commit these crimes and also most violent crime so I would not even object to getting rid of half of the male population. There would be many advantages, Jobs would be plentiful and perhaps males would learn to respect women for the superior gender that we are. Of course I think there should be only one way to excute rapist....by removing parts women do not have and doing it in public after stripping them completly so everyone will know what these males are losing.

Simon 26th March 2010	I think it goes to reporting, the USA ,Canada and Australia have very rigorous police reporting procedures. Also stigmatisation of rape victims is far less likely to occur in those countries, where as in India the opposite is true.

Martin Hedington - South Africa 13th March 2010	Apart from other issues, one must surely wonder at who's stats are used in -for example- South Africa. Even when considering so-called 'reported' rape, our own police stats on rape were estimated by our own Medical Research Council to reflect probably only one ninth of the actual reported total just a few years ago. Given that the South African Police are now pretty much accepted by most to be manipulating data to suit their own agenda, people should draw their own conclusions from any country with a known 'politically motivated' government. The US is a large country with a relatively large population therefore the prevalence of rape increases. it's probably more useful to measure the frequency of rapes in proportion to the population e.g. a "1 in X" number, therefore accounting for the population size, and giving a more accurate image of how serious the rape issue is within a given country.

iva benarpt 15th October 2009	These stats are not fair to US Americans. How many Americans immigrate to other countries as opposed to the many different cultures we have in USA. I live in a diverse neighborhood in US and when asked most people say I am Russian or Mexican, or Armani-an, (nothing personal, just first 3 popped in my head), etc. I say I am American. I feel that rape is a taught/learned and thus accepted behavior amongst the cultures of various countries used as a tool of power and control. It took many years and alot of hard work to get women to come forward and report due to the fact that the law would not protect them. So YES there are going to be higher stats. But how many actual "Americans" are committing these rapes? These stats should be categorized by nationality, ie: 16% of rapes in US committed by Americans, 12% commited by Chinese, 18% Australian, etc. Then we may be able to better establish which country/culture is breeding this degradation and destruction of the female soul and body. It shouldn't be too hard to throw together. How many Americans immigrate to India, Japan, Russia, South Africa, etc. Who knows, perhaps the majority of women in those other countries that do report the rape are Canadian and American. Anyhow, thanks for listening, I really needed to blow off some steam.
Michael 2nd October 2009	The reason that the US is so high is simple. The US, Canada and a few European countries are the only countries where a majority of the rapes ARE reported. Whereas in countries such as Pakistan, a woman runs the danger of being killed by her own family if she does report it. I'd venture to say that 99% of the rapes in 99% of the countries are NOT REPORTED. Its pretty easy to skew the statistics when the US is the only country reporting them.

Sorry, I can't do that too good, but it's a commonly debated issue in my country that very few rapes get's reported to the police, and that because of lack of evidence, they are hardly ever followed up, which leads to people not reporting them at the first place. I think Amnesty International suggests it may be as many as 8000-9000 rapes per year, though they too say it's hard to draw a line between a rape and situations like the man "being a little more forceful in the sexual act" then he usually is. But, the 555 number, that's for sure false.

Or at least give the user the option of viewing the figures that way, as crime rates is definitely the statistic most talked about on the web, and more useful when making country to country comparisons as this list is meant to do. For example, you'd think the US has much worse crime than my own country, Australia, but when the table is presented in terms of crime rates, the US drops down a fair bit and Australia is often in the top two or three countries in the developed world in crimes per population. (America's population is 15 times greater than that of Australia's)

I read on the Internet that there's a sex slave industry in India and that they leave babies out in the wild to die. I don't really know how much rape there is there, but that seems low. Also, the Congo isn't on either of these lists at all. I read statistics saying that 80% of the women in the country have been raped and 40% have AIDS. If 80% of the women have been raped, they should be #1 on the per capita list.

Australia I think these stats and the stats for rape are related. The more you trust the police the more likely you are to report a crime, such as rape. People who live in countries where the police are not trusted could very likely have many unreported crimes. Including and especially rape. This is why I still think these numbers are skewed and have no meaning. They simply reflect how much people trust the polce.

Rape is included in the sexual assault figure for australia as a part of how they gather violent crime stats, while the US does not include sexual assault only rape figures. Don't judge to quickly. They're not so many and it's very cold outside, but these numbers, in general, are only as good as the various governments are honest. However, one way to improve this, would be to list as a percentage (over total population). Note that if the USA would have the same rape percentage as Canada does in this graph then the rape amount in the USA would be laying at approx. 222,000 rapes a year. It would be in good sense to present these stats in percentage correlating to the population instead.

I'm sure there are cultures where women never report it, or the proper authorities aren't present to take data from sexually assaulted individuals. These numbers are terribly skewed and really shouldn't be displayed.

Lelia Katherine Thomas 29th August 2005	Edria Murray is right. Take Australia, for instance. Their population stays pretty steady at or around 20 million, and yet they come in 4th place here. To put it into perspective without anyone having to click links, the US has 295 to 300 million people (hahaha, known citizens; not including illegal aliens). This chart really should be a percentage one, rather than a case number one.

john dogh 8th February 2005	this is insane police dont do enough to keep rapists off the streets if this many people are approximately getting raped a year than oviesly police arent doing their job. Police need to pay more attention to all of the violence that goes on in this world you stuppid pigs.
