Ha!, the companies just don“t get it they want to sell at the same price as in the fisrt world!

and let me tell you all the conutries in the list are the most poor of th world.

Why should we gieve our money to companies that are already swiming in money? the artist get pay what a third of the total sell... And whats de cost of a CD in USD it wowld be 0.06 USD and the sell it to you at what ? 200% more!!

Just tell me if you would be a Mexican worker and only have 4.47 USD a day, would you spend your money for food, home and transportation in a 11 USD CD to listen only 2 songs and the rest 12 be a total waste!
I preffer the 0.7 USD Disc! The money will be used for what? well to give home and sustent to my mexican partner and his family! they need the money more than that american comapny and eaven better I can get the tracks I really love in one cd no matter if they are different companies or artist! all songs will be listened!

Yeah right USA has the lowest piracy rates... What is this iron curtain time times?!! Why do you produce false information when in reality it's obvious that USA is somewhere on 40th place in piracy. Most pirated software are born-stolen in USA and only part of it is spread abroad. US has as much piracy as any other country.

I don't see why so many people seem to have a problem with piracy. It doesn't hurt anybody, the artists get more followers, the people get free stuff, and the government gets a big slap to the face, that all sounds good to me.

It's because Armenia doesn't use much proprietary software to begin with. The high rate of IT literacy has contributed to a lot of professionals and even some companies (who are the main purchasers of software) using free (libre) software in Armenia. So if 93% of whatever small amount of proprietary software is used is pirated, that is not saying much. Not to the proprietary software companies though (the Business Software Alliance is the one who came up with the above numbers): They want to maximize their profits, and are pretty pissed off that Armenia prefers to use free software over theirs.

America is last because we are just about the only country that doesn't use Piracy as a common source of income combined with lack of laws against it. In China almost exact copies of media are sold openly on the street for a tenth of what we pay for them in America. Same thing in Mexico but are clearly just copies. If we did this in the USA, we would almost immediately be prosecuted for it. Also American companies make most media in the world and its just too hard to file suit internationally so there's less to fear doing it in other countries.

I just think this is horrific and do you think there will be any effective prevention of software piracy? I knew that when man went to the moon, we were in big,big trouble. The things that man invents can come back and bite him in the butt if they don't watch out. Too much is concentrated on watching all the time. The only person that needs to be watched to me is a person taking care of my child and the rest is on themselves. I am an abuse survivor and I wish my parents had of protected me better so what happened to me would not have happened. I feel pedophiles should be put to death real slow because one time is too many times of taking away someones innocense!

The whole reason why stats like these are being made, is for all the companies that make software, to keep high prices or even increase them, as a false reimbursement for all the piracy that happens to them.

armenia might be at the top but usa still has the first place when it comes the revenue losses to the piracy, usa has the biggest software market and its losses are huge, i mean if you pirate 20% of 10mio.USD your losses are much more higher than pirating 93% of 100.000 US dollar which could be armenian software market.

Infact no one likes to use pirated software if he is in a position to buy legally with his hard earned money. Simply think, when you are in a position to buy meal for yourself with your money, you hate take other's food. Prices of software meant for mass public must come down so that a common can purchase with his monthly income. When prices come down, definitely piracy will come down. There will not be any difference in profit margins also. But everybody uses legal software.

I live in Indonesia, and I know that mostly of Indonesia Computer users use cracked softwares in their laptop or PC. As one of the third world Country, You cannot blame the cracked software users. They use non original software because they don't have enough money to buy them. For example, in Indonesia, MS Office 2007 home edition is sold in IDR 1.2 - 1.7 Million. This amount is more than enough to feed a family with 4 persons in it for a month.

If Computer Store is forced to sell a PC bundled with all original softwares, you can imagine how expensive the price is. I and some of my friends right now try to educate computer users around us to use the open source softwares or freeware for their computer daily activity. But it takes a long-long time to educate them. They are already addicted and depend on Softwares that create by Huge Software Company such as Microsoft.

If Big Software Company and "uncle sam" want to banish this software piracy in Indonesia, I think that giving a fantastic low price is the best way for us. Right now, the lowest Windows XP home edition which is sold in Indonesia is about USD 70 equivalent to IDR 700.000 and We think this is still expensive.

We suggest that this price should low as IDR 200.000-350.000/Mostly every PC users can afford that. And for MS Office 2007 Home edition, we would be happy to have it at IDR 250.000 as the lowest price. Please do not see the price, but see how many the multiplier number (for about 60-80 Million users, maybe).

hope that my comment is useful for us as a figure for Software piracy in indonesia

All the jealous non-Americans here are talking bad about America. Don't forget you have the U.S. to thank for the internet you are using now, and the computer itself.

All you need to do is make sure you say, "thank you America" every time you turn your computer on.

How are they supposed to get these numbers? Do people just call in and say that they pirated software. BULL! Nobody is going to admit it. These people would have to go to every computer in the world and check every piece of software as it is installed. I am not saying that piracy does not happen. I'm saying that there is no way for them to know how much it happens.

It's not that software companies leave themselves open, it's quite the opposite. It's the fact that someone is bound to inevitably come along and bypass the 'protection' the company implemented.

Software companies do not want to hassle their customers with ultra tight security. Otherwise they would lose business. So they try to compromise by implementing things such as SecuRom and product keys and what not. But unfortunately, someone, for some reason unbeknownst to me, decides to bypass it and shares it with everyone. Probably so he or she can get a moment of fame.

"Factors that can contribute to differences in software piracy include: software prices relative to income, the strength of intellectual property protection and cultural attitudes. The countries with the lower piracy rates also tend to be strong producers of intellectual property, and vice versa."

Well, in the US they will throw you in prison for 5 years for uploading a copyrighted movie to Pirate Bay. It's a little harsh considering that some violent offenders are getting far less for unspeakable crimes.

I've had the opportunity to live and work in a variety of places throughout the world, and therefore can tell you that in many countries people simply can not afford to pay in excess of $100USD for a computer program. It is much easier to go to a night market and buy a pirated version for the equivalent about $2-5USD.

Software companies should consider these things when marketing their overpriced and sometimes flawed software. Sadly, with human nature being what it is, they'll likely continue to raise the prices in order to make up for the 'losses' they've incurred as a result of piracy.

As for stamping out piracy in developing countries, good luck! Most of the distributors of pirated goods in those places are paying bribes to government officials who are in charge of "tracking" them. In essence, the pirates have the same kind of influence with the government that the legit companies have in western nations. In other words, they can pay off politicians to do their bidding and halt any serious efforts to eradicate piracy. The only difference is that in most of those "oppressive" countries, 20yr old college students are thrown into prison at a far lower rate for what amounts to, at the most petty 'theft.'

Welcome to the land of the free!

Im researching software piracy for a college course and can not figure out why a company would leave themselves open for their software to be stolen in the first place. Sure we think just because we can find the software on the computer its okay to down load it (No one will Know) but where has our concious gone don't we as humans know right from wrong stealing is stealing.

I totally agree with Sam (10th June, 2009). Downloading software is probably the most common and easiest way to pirate. And where do people download from? Rapidshare, easy upload, mega upload and the likes. And where are the servers of these sites located?

You guessed right.

Just because someone lives in U.S. doesn't necessarily mean they can afford to purchase legal copies of media. The bottom line is, piracy allows more media to reach the masses. Nobody has mentioned all of the advocates of pirating, such as small bands that are able to reach more people through piracy. More listeners = more money when they head on tour. I think the real issue lies within the record/movie companies that are running monopolies. They charge ~ $15 for a CD that costs $1.50 to make and pay the bands pennies for each copy they sell. They've set themselves up for what is happening, but they'll never admit it. I don't understand anybody who feels sympathy for these companies, they certainly don't care about the consumers.

The solution?

Stop translating into those countries languages, for china and asian countries drop unicode support, and for the U.S.? Accept it as a fact of life. 13 year olds can't afford photoshop or visual studio. They can dig computers out of the trash. It's how I had to learn.

Otherwise? Open source software takes over, no one can make a living writing software, industry stagnates, and we end up with current tech 20 years down the road.

OSS is good and all, but after the fame is over, most of the developers dissipate. There is no fortune in it.

I just finished writing a paper on Piracy, and the actual reason for the rate being so low in America (aside from the fact that many can't afford it in other countries) is that we have the highest percentage of computers in the world and an even higher percentage of software producers, so compared to other countries high shipping rates and relative supply and demand (high supply + low demand = high prices) , we get our software cheap.
Manni Vtply (Vienna, Austria)
3rd November 2008
You can't consider the US as the worst in controlling software piracy. The US is a large country, and that only 21 percent of all its software is pirated is a very big achievement because it is harder to controll a large country than smaller ones. The US thereby saved much more software from being pirated than all the other countries. Microsoft has also started a new campaign to make software cheaper for poor countries such as Vietnam, where over 90 percent of all the software is pirated. Check everything you see on the flip-side.
Luke (Australia)

Copied goods aren't usually a loss because the odds are that the person wouldn't have bought the good at all if it were the original at original price. Example, a$US500 designer handbag or a $US10000 Rolex watch would never be considered by a middle income earner in Thailand, however, at $US10 and $US30 respectively, they will buy it. Therefore, the companies who own the brands are not losing a penny. Realistically, if you genuinally want a big brand name good, you will by the original, otherwise you will never be truely satisfied knowing it's a fake.

The only area which needs to be investigated is shops selling the fakes as real. Most of the time we can tell if it is real or not is by the outlet where it is being sold...Street vendor selling Gucci, let them be. Gucci shop selling fakes, yeah, fair enough....

If you make $150 a month and you can't afford a $50 video game, don't buy it, genius. Being poor is NOT an excuse for commiting crime. You may as well say you have the rights to rob a bank because you need more money. If you can barely afford make ends meet, why will you even be considering video games?

The ignorance of some people is very laughable.

How come piracy rate in US is smallest but piracy losses are highest? http://www.aic.gov.au/stats/crime/piracy/
Dinar P. Wiria-Atmadja (Jakarta, Indonesia)
3rd October 2007
In poor countries such as Indonesia, people tend to buy piracy products because of low income, besides lack of education and understanding that piracy is a crime.

Probably 80% of the labor force get paid less than Rp.3million (less than US$300) per month. Original DVD copies ranges from Rp.150,000 - Rp.300,000 (US$14 - 27) per piece. For most Indonesians, this price is ridiculously high as they have to feed 5 people in the family with US$300 per month.

Another reason is that there is little information or education about piracy. Very few people understand that it is a crime and that buying piracy products is a crime as well.

Not to mention that there is only one (!) legal CD/ DVD replicator in Indonesia out of 23 manufacturers ( Digital Media Technology ). When I say 'legal' it means that this manufacturer is the only company that has the ISO and CDSA certification (CDSA = Content Delivery and Storage Association). So, availability of the products is also an issue here.
PJ
3rd August 2007
US is not totally innocent nor does it have less software piracy, the only reason the rate is so low is that to total amount of software is so much more than anywhere else.
If you look at software piracy losses (financial losses) you will see that the US has about well over 6 billion in losses, the highest in the world. The second highest is China with around 3 billion.
So the US should really be considered as the WORST when it comes to software piracy! They don't have the same excuse as lesser developed nations, they can actually afford to pay for it and have very good access to it.
Muhammad Anil Babur (Rawalpindi, Pakistan)
30th May 2007
All these are false stats, they have no solid foundation. Only a software vender can rate which country is using their softwares and how many copies are legal. How can a third party collect stats globally. It does not makes me sense. You should also provide data collection method. I know a person in US who downloads copies of softwares from torents sites and sell them illegally in US, so how can they accurately figure that US citizens are torally innocent. How ever availibility and incom is good point to rate, but how can a country is rated at # 9 while official inflation rate is 11.5%, it means more than 2 million people have no idea where they have to spend their tons of money.
moo (thailand)
9th April 2007
Some of you people may think that we are poor and unable to purchase legal copies. The truth is we are not so poor. Every Thai citizen that owns computer surely can afford the legal copy of popular application like WinXP or Office. The real reason is the ignorance of Thai Citizen. Most of us don't care how hard anyone could comeup with these programs. They said "Big coporates already make good money" or " I don't care.I just want them cheap"

A lot of movies and songs are banned where I am - and I'm not saying phonography or anything like that. Straight-forward movies and music CDs/DVDs are extremely hard to obtain and most of it, we will never ever see selling at registered stores.

I have even tried to buy from Amazon.com being that I will not support piracy goods should there be a outlet to get movies/albums I want, even though the exchange rate is x3.7. Amazon does not ship to my home country being that each original CDs/DVDs sold must always be screened by our government, and the only possible way to get it is the ones distributed and approved by them.

Where there is a demand for piracy goods, there will always be sellers/distributors.

How to stop this? Start with the government.

What about trying to globably advertise open-source alternatives to copyrighted software?

Sharing your copy of The Gimp or OpenOffice.org with your neighbor (and millions of others via p2p) is encouraged, not prosecuted.

If enough users migrate away from the software giants, it will force them to change their marketing strategies and rethink their copyrights.
Sheeple Rancher

BSA figures are fudged. Aside by scaling the numbers up, they assume that any copy is a "loss".
These are NOT losses:
a) Someone who takes a copy and never uses it (collector).
b) Someone who would not have bought the software even if they could not have copied it.

Do you know of the availability of the products in Vietnam or China? Are you sure all the products they desire can be shipped to their homes as easily as they would be in other nations, such as North American or European nations?

I think piracy has a lot to do with availability. If the only way to view a product or to obtain a product is through piracy, and there is no other way of viewing the product, it makes it rather unfair for the people who live in the countries where they cannot legally obtain an item they wish to view. Rights are taken for granted in the countries where they can receive products quickly and easily versus the countries that cannot.

Solution to piracy???
1. seized the people not only producing and selling the pirated goods but also the buyers.
2. Unbailable for those producers or financiers.
