This is very sad, and suicide isnt the answer it is about open communication, understanding... there is a way out, and the answer is not SUICIDE... Life is a gift! use your life to help other's, etc... this is a touchy topic but sad.....

I think that suicide is not a crime but some people are really upset and the think death is the better option.

There's correlation between drugs and suicide rate. Sweden and USA have zero tolerance towards drugs and their rates are just average.

Given what is happening in our country, I still think we are at the top for suicide. It is very sad indeed that people, especially ones so young, cannot see any hope.

I live in a community that has a high suicide rate. Less then 8,000 people and in the last year I know at least 7 who succeeded. Probably a lot more who tried and failed. I do think drinking and drugs play a big part. Very sad!! What are all those 'Groups' we hand out money to, doing? It is not working, what ever they do!

suicide is a crime because a murder is still being committed. it is a very selfish crime as they leave behind loved ones. it is a crime also because they persicute themselves when they take their own life

I shall repeat here the same comment I made regarding murder rates: the stats here actually show how rare suicide is– at least in the small number of countries surveyed.

I think people when they read these stats tend to get an emotional reaction to the *word* and not look at the actual figures.

I do agree it's a bit problematic to class suicide as a crime– though that was the historical practice.

Kathy, that's because women tend to express their emotion while men are taught from a young age to suck it up. So when a man is going through a crisis you wont realise it tell its too late. Women also attempt suicide at a higher rate than man. Sooooo, how are WOMEN the superior race?

I will have to disagree with Kathy about gender weakness. Women attempt suicide at a rate almost 50% greater than that of men.

When we check the gender of those who take their own life, we will find that males do so several times the rate women do at all ages. In some places, at least 10 males do so for each woman that does so I think it would be clear that males are the weaker gender and since there are so many other areas males fall short in, women are actually the superior gender

To Ramzel,
A suicide attempt is a crime, but suicide (with success) is not. In other words, if you attempt to commit sucide but fail, then you have committed a crime.

Suicide is the only crime that is not punishable if completed. If attempted but the individual is not successful it is considered a "crime" and the individual is normally sent to some kind of therapy.

Suicide is not a crime, because you cannot prosecute the individual for doing it.

Why do you include suicides under crime statistics? Surely suicide is not a criminal offence in most (if not all) of the countries listed?

How sad....and curious that most of the people who suicides ranging from 15-24 years old are from the so said richest countries.... but this is a date from back the 1990's so it ain't reliable
