whaat -_- How is Japan #6? USA I can kind of understand... sort of, though I don't think USA should be the number 1 country for crime and Japan is effin safe!!!! seriously! I even forgot my work laptop, wallet, electronic dictionary, and a few junk in a bag in the Ueno train station restroom in Tokyo. Ueno is the last stop for the narita express trains and skyliner, meaning there are A LOT of foreigners there. Heck, when i went to the station staff, they said someone found it and brought it to them and of course I had to show them proof and tell them what was inside so they know it was mine but seriously, if it was in another country, most likely I would have never gotten them back which is serious trouble. Also, EVERYTHING WAS THERE! NOTHING WAS STOLEN.
Though I do know that crimes tend to happen in the Kansai region (Osaka, Kyoto, etc) because there are more foreigners from... how should I say this... undeveloped countries? or not even that, east "enemy" countries as well (most crimes were not by pure Japanese. Mainly by naturalized people).
Anyway, enough of the so called "racism" you guys may think but, Japan should NOT be #6. Everyone can tell you all the good stuff that has happened that if it was in another country, it would be bad.

You can play around with statistics as much as you want, but they are largely meaningless because they are dependent on so many factors which are not constant from country to country.
The cold hard facts of logic are indesputable. That is if every country had the same laws, same enforcement, same recordal ,same culture, too name a few factors, you might be able to have meaningful comparisons. That aside if all countries had the same determining factors,no one could say in all honesty that if you give those who commit crimes ,weapons that enable greater ability to commit maximum damage ,then they will cause less deaths than if they didnt have those weapons.
It's just nonense and defies logic to argue that giving the population access to moreweapons with greater killing ability can in anyway reduce fatalities. If this was true every country would have nuclear weapons and the US would not be hypocritically seeking nuclear non proliferation.
I wait for the day americans are walking down the street with gun holsters like the wild west and Rocket propelled granade launchers on their shoulders arguing that teachers should have these in classrooms to combat machine gun toting students.
One day society will wake up and realise that guns should be banned from urban areas except those in gun clubs. There is no legitimate reason for guns in urban areas.

I am looking for a extremely reliable source for my research regarding the subject related to the crime
statistic and its detail. can anyone tell me how accurate sources are, and what original sources
are used for this site?

Thanks much

You people seem to be forgetting that the statistics shown are probably from 2002 or something. The crime rate in most of these countries has probably increased... So this list is almost completely inaccurate.

To be fair most of that US crime is drug and alcohol related, you should look for a "violent crime" chart
ErikwithaK

No China? No Australia? And the list should be crimes per 100,000, not just total crimes. US has less than twice as many crimes than the UK, but five times the population.

would be nice to see this with a total population comparison. Since this is a comparison of total crimes it seems likely that it may also show "non-violent crimes" or the "victimless crimes" such as smoking Marijuana etc.

This is not 100k incidents, how could that even make sense? Anyway, @William, how does that number equate to every four people doing a crime? I did the math, something you should try sometime, and it comes to being every 23, which is significantly better than most other developed nations (UK and Canada, namely).

Seriously, every four? Do you even know the population of the US?

Chelly, really? These numbers are per 100,000 people? Really?

I don't understand how you can look at these numbers and come to that conclusion. That must've been a very busy 100k people to have committed 12 million violent crimes in the US. Your argument is completely without basis on its face.
Dutch
10th January 2013
Yep. Going to have to agree with Alex here (though to be fair, Chelly is correct that that is often the measure used).

Also, worth noting the disclaimer at the bottom of the page, regarding reporting, competency of the authorities, and we might also add, lack of corruption in the judicial system.

Just a thought.

Agree on the total not normalized. Unless every single person, including babies experiences 118 reported crimes per year. An average of 472 per family per year.
Not likely.

24th December 2012

So Chelly, you are telling us that the U.S. has 11,877,218 crimes per 100,000 people? That's over 118 crimes per person. Unlikely in my view, unless you inlcude parking tickets and overdue library books.

More likely, in your rush to condemn the US for supposedly having the highest "RATE" of crime, which is untrue, you have failed to apply some basic math.

What a ridiculous statement. Guns have only been around for ~500 years. Are you saying prior to that, no one had any need to protect themselves?

For the people who cannot see a country on the list, for example China or Pakistan.... it says some countries data wasn't available, not that there isn't crime!! China is communist, they control all data going in and out, and Pakistan well, it's one of the most corrupt countries on the planet.

Lastly, this is about crimes which are "validated and processed"!!
most 3rd world countries don't have proper police! they don't record crimes like in the West.

Wake up.

Why isn't there an option to display by rate? Bulk numbers don't tell much since population sizes are so disparate.

17th December 2012
These are raw numbers, not CRIME RATES. Of course the USA has the most crime. We have the best reporting and we have a whole lot of people (only China and India have more). As far as I'm concerned these numbers mean nothing. Give us a CRIME RATE, number of crimes per 100k population. Do that and the US is way below most of Europe.

I lived in Sao Paulo, Brasil for two years. The police rarely even entered the favellas or poor neighborhoods where people didnt even have phones often. Crime was rampant there. Crime mostly unreported.
So in a country like USA where I an from and have resided most if my life, I see why are vrime rates ate the highest. Were larger than England for example, and there is a camera on every corner. I live in the boonies, very far away from large cities, and large populations. There are cameras on all the street corners and traffic lights. Even way out here. Were under heavy surveillance.
Big brother sees all. Of course our crime is high.

America has less violent crimes per capita than a few countries on this list. And to those of you saying that violent crimes are caused because of guns, why do the UK and Germany have the highest per capita crime rates with tight gun control laws? Why do the cities in the US with the most gun control have the highest crime rates? Look at the facts, gun control doesn't work. Find something else to blame crime on, like people, rather than pointing the finger at anything else. We ban guns, then knives are used for murder, then we ban knives then something else is used and banned until we get all the way to hands, then we ban hands? If somebody is broken enough to want to kill somebody, they'll find a way to do it. A gun makes the playing field equal. If guns didn't exist some big strong psycho would have no way to have his killing spree stopped.

Also criminals aren't going to give up their guns, and will find a way to get one illegally anyways.

People also have to remember, we actually punish criminals here in America and people have faith in our system. We do not have rebels running wild with low crime stats. I am happy to know our crime force is out there trying to catch the people who do harm. I have lived in Europe and America, but I have traveled to a lot of countries. I can say, most areas of Europe and America, I felt very safe. However, some of the countries with lower rates, were very dangerous.

I think can be misleading to people who have not visited these other countries, were corruption is rampant and so is criminal activity. I feel very safe in America where I live (I wouldn't in the ghettos of major cities), but overall, most areas are safe. America is safe because people are reported and while corruption can happen anywhere in the world, it is not tolerated here. Our cops are not accepting tips or participating in the criminal activity, like I have seen in other areas of the world. Cops in Mexico City were helping criminals when my friend visited, I mean come on! Cops in Jamaica were accepting money after pulling over people illegally as well.

We also penalize people for marijuana and other offenses that other countries do not see as criminal. We also penalize people for abusing their kids or wife, but in some middle eastern countries for example, it is accepted. You cannot lock up a daughter here just because she spoke to a boy, but in some areas of the world, you can do that and even perform an "honor killing". We do not tolerate that here and I thank God we don't! We also report all crimes, where some countries do not.

This is also off of total crimes, which any country with a large population will have a large crime rate as well. It needs to be per capita.

People often connect Muslims and Muslim counties with crime stating that the overpopulation in this community leads illiteracy and reason for them to become criminals. You can speculate and say south africa would but the reality is its not, crime has actually been on the decline in SA so in few years there might be less poverty and less crime, i can also not say that 100%, the US has the most divorces, most fat people most crimes, more debt than south africa to name a few. Theres alot of good things that come from their to but its not as perfect a nation as it would like people to believe thats just my take on it.

Look at #2 on the list: The UK has very strict gun control (possession of a handgun anywhere is a minimum five-year prison sentence), and no death penalty.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two UK police officers were recently convicted of selling guns, intended for destruction, to criminals. They did not go to jail. Trust in the police, the judicial system, and official (or any other) statistics is low here.

If you compare the fact that the US has 309 million people, and the UK only 62 million, Germany 82 Million, you will see that the actual crime rate is much higher in those countries. Also if you look at the murder rate per capita in the world the U.S. isn't even in the top 37. THAT is the purpose of the second amendment
sami

Useless. Should be rated based on per capita (or per 100,000). How can you compare a country like Canada with 30 million people with India with Billion and say crime rate is lower in Canada when in fact it is twenty five times greater in Canada on per capita basis.

"Total crimes" is a useless statistic. Why no "total crimes per 100,000"? Obviously the United States has more total crimes than U.K. We have over 311,000,000 people compared to 62,000,000 in the UK.

So the US is about 3,800 crimes per 100,000 while the UK is at 10,483 per 100,000!

the top most country in the crime is Pakistan, if we compare to the number of people suffered vs total population or a particular area vs its total population. US is the top because it has a large population.

The United States shows the highest numbers of crimes committed, but keep in mind that these numbers only represent how many crimes have been reported. In the United States the population is high and there are many law enforcement buildings, officers, and access to resources for victims then say, somewhere like the poorer countries in South America, who's numbers above are quite low, but where crimes take place extremely often.

I would like to point out that the U.S. does not have more prisoners in jail than China, because the Chinese do not count the 600,000 people incarcerated in detention camps. In addition, if you consider the income inequality, the racial and ethnic heterogeneity of the U.S. population, and the degree of freedoms Americans enjoy, the U.S. incarceration rate is fairly low. In addition, if you think about the fact that less than 1% of the U.S. population is in jail on any given day, what the heck is the big commotion about?

I love how these people always go to the problems in Mexico. I've traveled around that country as well as Guatemala and Honduras, which are the murder capitals of our hemisphere and have never had a problem ever!!!! But I wasn't walking around some poor area at night wearing my bling either. Most of the people I've met in those countries were very kind and wonderful people. There are multiple factors you need to consider, the most important being massive population differences, these are not per capita and as aresult they are disproportionate. Also one must take into consideration that when collecting statistics they only include crimes that have been reported, ergo countries with weak infrastructure usually have "lower"crime rates. On another note, the United states does have a relatively high crime rate, in comparison to other developped countries, but I'm sure they are striving to improve.

I'm not surprised to see United States on top and this does not mean that US is a dangerous place to live in. The way I see it, their system is so strong that every little crime gets caught either by the police or FBI or whatever.

I believe that hundreds of people are killed, kidnapped, tortured, harassed, abused, get robbed and what not here in my country (Paksitan) everyday but there's hardly anything ever reported. I don't believe this report and even if the numbers are correct, I'm sure cases don't even get registered in places like Pakistan where there's no justice and systems are not as transparent as in US.

The biggest reason we have so much crime is that people know they will not be punished severely for their actions. Our country tends to lean on the fact our prisons are overcrowded and throwing more criminals in their is against there Constitutional rights because they have to share a room with four, six, and sometimes even eight other criminals. You tell me what is wrong with this picture.

Be reasonable, the United States try to actually catch those criminals, thus their crimes are in the record.

As for the Muslim countries, I presume they barely keep a record of crimes the terrorists commit, what's the point?

For the rest, I don't know about those countries, they probably don't spend as much time, AND money to catch them criminals and having them on the record.

It's true that those with higher population will have higher crimes. For instance Johannesburg in South Africa is the 4th most dangerous country in the world and South Africa's daily murder figures are that of United Kingdom's yearly figures.
Poor countries will have higher crime rates due to a lot of funding and corruption. Africa is a hub of corruption. People are born with it there as it is a way of life. I know this as I live in Africa and the UK, travelling frequently on business. The UK has a low crime rate, even compared to American crimes of equal stature, i.e. homicide, muggings and such. Look at Canada. Canada has more guns per person than the USA, yet the USA has a viral problem with gun crime. It's not the movies or games, because they have the same movies and games in Canada. It's the mentality. Canadians are good and friendly and actually have a great country. I'd love to live there one day. Americans have the mentality that if it moves it needs bullet holes. Simple as that. Look at their wars. Americans have killed more of their own and their Allied forces than the enemy killed theirs. The UK is focused on killing the enemy. The Americans are focused on killing everybody.

Vagina
28th April 2011

It would be nice to have this broken down by gender. I am sure that you would find that if you wanted to find a criminal, you would find them faster if you looked for someone with a vagina. The more violent the crime, the more likely they are to have a vagina but at least their victim will have had a vagina. At least when women kill people, they usually kill other women. That would be fine with me if they would leave men and children alone.

19th February 2011
Bear in mind that crimes are reported differently in each country. That makes comparisons like these almost worthless. Take the reporting of violent crimes in the UK. If you look at the statistics from the UK government website, just over half of those violent crimes recorded result in no injury to the victim. In the US, those crimes would not be recorded and included in the stats.
Until there is a universal recording method, or until someone is prepared to work through the various reports and standardize the numbers, these sort of figures shoud be taken with a grain of salt.

The USA is made up of most countries rejects,so we will always have high crime. We let anyone in, legal and not legal. Plus our prisons compared to most countries are like a resort area with bars, crime is prisons here highest in world also. Our country has crime from the white house to the streets. We worry more about what other countries are doing and not our own safety, our own education system. Drugs and crime are part of our culture. I would bet over 50 % of the people in America do some sort of drug. Freedom we have, but what price do we pay?

Gernot: Blaming the high number of total crimes on the death penalty and lack of gun control is, in a word, silly.

Look at #2 on the list: The UK has very strict gun control (possession of a handgun anywhere is a minimum five-year prison sentence), and no death penalty.

And yet, we have five times their population and less than twice their number of crimes. Makes them more than twice as criminal as we are.

Anupam Katkar ,You're absolutely correct.Gernot ,Americans and their guns have saved far more lives than they've taken.I don't know where you're from but at some point in time Americans may very well saved your parents or grand parents. It's "trendy"for people to bash America until you need us to save you from some horrible tyrant bent on wiping you out.We have our problems for sure but most of us wouldn't live any where else.

A compilation of statistics will have to take into account reported crimes. In a country with strong law enforcement, high crime-fighting budget and good technology, a significant proportion of crimes would be detected as opposed to a country which does not have these. This helps explain why USA tops the list.

So you believe that USA is the most populated country in the world. OK you are an american, we'v go that. :)

BTW - the link you have in the end of your post is just ONE TYPE of crime. See the difference?

I am an american living in a middle class area in Brazil and almost everyone lives behind a gate with a big dog. It is virtually impossible to own a gun here so only the cops and robbers have them. The only places that even remotely resemble this place are the inner cities in the U.S.A. Kidnappings are epidemic here and they will hold you for your debit or credit card. Almost everyone I know here in Campinas Brazil has been robbed (by being put in fear ) at least once. You have two extremes with urban and suburban US being policed up the wazoo where joe sixpack almost allways has some minor criminal history ala his drinking and here in Brazil the complete opposite where everyone most of the time does in traffic and in other areas pretty much what they want ,Where should both societis be , I believe somewhere in the middle with a good effective police dept that is honest and deployed effectively where it is needed and not a judicial system that is a national business like in the USA. Both systems are very imperfect. The states needs the police and the judiciary out of Joe workingmans pockets and life, and Brazil needs help because overall people here live with fear. I miss the cops from the fifties and sixties they were like us working people and not actors like they seem to be today.

Unfortunately America is full of crazy people who think that guns and violence are the answer. Their film industry has a lot to do with it, encouraging the idea that problems are solved by killing people. The US still has a death penalty which means that the official line is that killing people is OK.

The gun lobby is too powerful, and so everyone carries a gun, just as the junk food industry is too strong, and so the country is full of very fat people.

It's a tragedy.

Amy Becker thats is the most unjustified sexist thing i have ever heard you cant just come on here and start spitting out personal opinions with no real relation to the topic involved. MAybe there are more males associated with violent crimes then females (if that is even true), but what makes you say that their victims are also male.. ever heard of a petifile domestic violence? the targets in these cases are children and often women. Women can be just as violent in men and to prove you wrong i hope you are a victim of a violent crime commit by a fellow women

This doesn't really give you a good picture on a world level. First of all crime by number doesn't really do anything because variances in populations. Secondly, every country has different rules and laws, so we have people committing crimes in one country that's not considered a crime in another country. That's comparing countries' level freedom by how many laws they have without considering the severity or moderation of each law. Actually, come to think of it...I'd like to see those numbers. Who's truly freer on this planet.

The two most populous countries in the world don't even make the list?
#82 Montserrat had 751 crimes. So according to this, China and India had less than 751 crimes apiece? I notice a comment pointing out that Brazil isn't on the list, either. Isn't Sao
Paulo FAMOUS for it's crime? I'll bet the city alone dwarfs
the 751.

Just as a note to all those claiming that USA got the highest because of the population, this isnt quite true, India and china have the majority when it comes to population, but still got a lower crime rate.
but the crime per capita is still more accurate though.

Its totally dumb to justify the crime rate of US by comparing its population with Germany's...
in that case, the US crime rate is about 7 times than that of India's, while India's population is almost 4 times the US population. Justify this now!

Hahahaha, you guys, you don't realize what you're saying. The U.S. DOES lead in crime. The chart we're looking at is for TOTAL, not per capita. In order to see the highest crime rates per capita, you click the tab that says "per capita" (who woulda thunk?!), and then you can see that Dominica has the highest rate per capita. Besides, if you guys even knew what per capita meant, you'd know the U.S. was not the leader. It's common sense.

It would be nice to have this broken down by gender. I am sure that you would find that if you wanted to find a criminal, you would find them faster if you looked for someone with testicles. The more violent the crime, the more likely they are to have testicles but at least their victim will have had testicles too. At least when males kill people, they usually kill other males. That would be fine with me if they would leave women and children alone.

I dont know how much I rely on this data table.

Brazil doesnt even make the top 82 countries, having less crimes than countries such as Finland and Denmark, countries globally praised for their safety & well-being?
And even less than Montserrat that has 751 crimes.

As a Brazilian who is honored by our positive aspects but acknowledges our lack of infrastructure and bad use of govt money (as opposed to the countries above mentioned, for instance, I can safely assure one thing: We have more than 751 crimes per city/week...

as a south african im shocked when i see that we are no.7 . the truth is people are being murdered every hour in our country. come and see how our houses look like concentration camps barbwire, electric fences, security gates, high walls.i know more than 20 people personally who've been killed in the past 10years. criminals burn elderly people with irons. wives being raped in front of their husbands, people being stabbed and shot for mobile phones. we are prisoners in our own homes.this evening i saw a guy being shot dead for a mobile phone. almost everybody in this country has been a victim of crime. kids cant play outside anymore, cars being highjacked the worst is when they come into your own home and take you belongings beat you, wife, maid lock you in the bathroom or shoot you for nothing. south africa is the capital city of crime in the whole wide world.

Hello, "Ron (Boca Raton, Florida)" knows nothing about mexico, the tourist areas are not a problem. Just wanted to point that out. thanks

To Quirel: You speak with the tone of someone who feels they may be somewhat of an authority, and yet you miss the most basic concept, as noted at the bottom of the list. That it has more to do with reporting and intervention of crime, than the actual prevalence of crime. And secondly, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the United States would have a higher crime rate by default simply because of it's larger geographic area, and much larger population. I feel you may be feeding too much on anti-everyone-else propaganda.

there is a note that you are missing at the bottom of the page
DEFINITION: Note: Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence.
this means that if law enforcement is not present or notified that crimes are not added to the tally, so the rate of crime in mexico may be higher per capita but this gragh wouldn't show it if the system of law enforcement was less efficient than in other countrys.

Leonard, these statistics cover all crime, not just gun crime. Also you should note, guns laws are strict (but not outrightly banned) in Britain, but criminals (not suprisingly) dont obey these laws. The UK is a hell of a lot more dangerous than outsiders are lead to believe.

These stats are for total crimes and any stats are never going to be 100% accurate
example Mexico could have highest murder rate but they could have way less of other crimes
South Africa might have major gang problems but they might not have many car thiefs for example.... these stats are for "TOTAL CRIMES" and thats only the crimes that have been reported many crimes go un-reported or charges get dropped,etc.... and also depends on how accurate the stats they are getting from the police/government on these crimes happening and lots of times the governments edit or change stats also to make a country/city/town/etc... seem better or less violent then it really is..... news likes to do this also..

in answer to Quier's comment, it is correct, any smart person can do the math and figure out that while the populations may be different, America is still higher then any other. just go get a calculator, crunch some numbers to figure out what percentage the crime rate number is compared to the population of the country and you will find that about 7% of the us is on that list, and about 3% of Mexico is on that list, and 2% of Ireland is on that list. its not brain science, just smile math. which country has clouded jails? the US.which county has more stupid laws? the US. when you have so many laws, and so many restrictions, people are bound to rebel. in Costa Rica, there are few laws, they have no military, no speed limits, let they have few accidents, and fewer people on drugs because if its not illegal, it takes away the thrill of it so people be as likely to do it. anyone who wants to talk further on this issue can find me on live journal as 1gniht or on my space under Becker, URL loveofbass.

why crimes are increasing as the time is going old?
Albert Kay (Singapore)
27th January 2007
The United States appears to stand out in this statistic, having four times as many crimes as Germany which is next on the list. However this is misleading as the population of the United States is about four times as high as the population of Germany. As a country with a high population is likely to have more crime (there are more people to commit crimes)
--------------------------------------------------------
I don't agree with the above statement...
What about India and China ?
I doubt that USA have population bigger than either one of the 2 countries.
India and China is not even at the Top 5 spots....

TAKE YOUR LIFE IN TO YOUR OWN HANDS…
A woman, man, or teenager can and indeed should, be armed with courage, determination, spirit, and knowledge, whether or not they are armed with anything else, they should be ready for the offender with a save enough, non-lethal self defense weapon as a powerful stun gun in close encounter defense, or a pepper spray such as a mace gel, or a taser M-18 with enough distance capabilities to down the attacker, predator and or rapist before he gets close enough to inflict damage. I am a firm believer that if anyone interested in their own self defense will read our little booklet…”the facts about defense sprays and how to use them to bring criminals to their knees”…. will be on their way to be crime proof...We invite you to use some of our other “free” resources in the self defense store such as the “crime watch library” with a large selection of “free” crime prevention reports, or the “free” newsletter from “Drug Free America” with a wealth of information as to fend against drug addiction and related crimes, will be a aid in setting up a easy to use and effective self protection program which will keep you safe and sound from possible future attackers and violence. We are looking forward to show you how this is done with out frizzles and false costly promises mostly by just browsing our site which is definitely for “free” and without any obligations. Then following some of the steps outlined to physically fend for your self, using one of our very reasonably priced self defense weapons, self defense videos or a combination of both will assure you with just that, a safe and sound approach to protect yourself from crime now and in the future….”Check This Out At: http://www.ento-guard.com And Get A Free Crime Watch Report”…

This chart is ready proof that "facts" relayed on the internet are often several degrees short of reality. I am not sure what methodology was used to arrive at these results; to assert that more crime is committed in Japan than Columbia is surely nonsense. Please explain how Jamaica (a country rife with murder, theft and corruption) can be less crime-laden than the Nordic paradise of Norway. In short, these numbers are f**ked.
Kathrine (South Africa) (South Africa)

South Africa always appears in the top 4 in most cases (rape, murder, theft etc) and the lowest in policing, feeling safe etc. Yet America is top for total crime.. should it not be SA. We certainly dont feel safe and everyone I know has personally experienced crime or has a loved one who has had crime.
A friend of mine stays in New Zealand and we been there for extended stay (6 months) and never experienced crime or people that had exposure to crime. So where do their stats come from?
So how is this stats relative?

The top three slots going to the US, Germany and the UK does not really indicate that crime is rampant in these societies. One should bear in mind that the level of documented crime in a society depends in large part on the willingness of that society to prosecute its criminals. The US experiences violence within its borders but hardly takes a lax attitude.

This is not the case everywhere. One can easily look around the world and find regimes that daily turn blind eyes to rampant violence. Stores can be ransacked, ethnic minorities can be persecuted, political enemies can be imprisoned, and women and children can be abused in their own homes without any government intervention. Such regimes can, because of the lower number of crimes they prosecute, claim a lower level of documented crime. The daily reality faced by their citizens is a different matter.

This is why any serious discussion of the true level of crime in a society takes into account the matter of official corruption and the political process in the country.
