Me 24th May 2012 |
What alot of you fail to realize is that these records show recorded accounts of crimes....many 3rd world countries do not have the proper authority or availability to capture as many criminals as the U.S. |
My+name 22nd May 2012 |
Remember most crime is actually property crime. One country can have very high property crime and low violent crime and vice versa. |
My+name 22nd May 2012 |
Tabloid papers mislead the public into thinking total crime is going up. In many western countries, like Australia, crime overall is decreasing. They simply emphasise certain categories. |
Sara Idzerda 30th April 2012 |
what I find so interesting is the fact that the united states also has the highest belief in police efficacy... |
Anonymous 27th April 2012 |
The United States shows the highest numbers of crimes committed, but keep in mind that these numbers only represent how many crimes have been reported. In the United States the population is high and there are many law enforcement buildings, officers, and access to resources for victims then say, somewhere like the poorer countries in South America, who's numbers above are quite low, but where crimes take place extremely often. |
kevin 26th April 2012 |
Stig, You are totally incorrect. The crime rate, per capita, including murder is MUCH higher in the UK than in the USA. |
samuel 25th April 2012 |
Does this include the actions of the politicians and businessmen? Oh what about the common man? We are all frequent law breakers here, in one way or another. These are the guys who got caught in India |
Andy Plotkin 15th April 2012 |
I would like to point out that the U.S. does not have more prisoners in jail than China, because the Chinese do not count the 600,000 people incarcerated in detention camps. In addition, if you consider the income inequality, the racial and ethnic heterogeneity of the U.S. population, and the degree of freedoms Americans enjoy, the U.S. incarceration rate is fairly low. In addition, if you think about the fact that less than 1% of the U.S. population is in jail on any given day, what the heck is the big commotion about? |
max 27th March 2012 |
I wish there were another column for population-adjusted crime rates. |

I love how these people always go to the problems in Mexico. I've traveled around that country as well as Guatemala and Honduras, which are the murder capitals of our hemisphere and have never had a problem ever!!!! But I wasn't walking around some poor area at night wearing my bling either. Most of the people I've met in those countries were very kind and wonderful people. Those that doubt the US statistics probably live in their little shack in the Ozarks and have never heard of home invasions, car jackings and drive by shootings. These things are real and they happen right here in the good ol' USA Jethro. |

Use your Head 21st January 2012 |
There are multiple factors you need to consider, the most important being massive population differences, these are not per capita and as aresult they are disproportionate. Also one must take into consideration that when collecting statistics they only include crimes that have been reported, ergo countries with weak infrastructure usually have "lower"crime rates. On another note, the United states does have a relatively high crime rate, in comparison to other developped countries, but I'm sure they are striving to improve. |
Hanif Baloch 17th January 2012 |
Pakistan is not listed, it mean there is low rate than non islamic countries |
Jack D 3rd January 2012 |
Wow Ireland Have an amazingly low crime rate for the amount of drunks They have ;) |
Paula 8th November 2011 |
Thank you, Edria Murray! Posting bald numbers is very misleading. I thought something along those lines when I read the statistics. There are so very many people here. And might I add, a LOT of immigrants? Of both the legal and illegal type! Thank you for adding that important bit of information into the equation! |
Dave 24th October 2011 |
If america has 307 million people and south africa has 48 million (6.4:1) then south africa has 17176633.6 crimes if it was the same size as U.S? Im not a math type guy, but thats what it seems like? |
Travis 19th October 2011 |
Actually, none of that is offset by population, kind of an important factor to include if you want to get a real perspective on crime. You might want to think about . . . well, you might want to think period. |
Ibrahim Yilmaz 13th October 2011 |
I think the writing of Dare shows the American mentality most. Why they can so easiliy accuse the others but still commit most crime. |

Singapore is safer than most advanced country, Khalis. For your information, this is already 2011, a decade has passed and it's enough time to decrease the crime rate. In case you're still living in the past. Stop complaining. |

While there is about 15% of the American population in the jail system, we are a long way from being number 1. |

I'm not surprised to see United States on top and this does not mean that US is a dangerous place to live in. The way I see it, their system is so strong that every little crime gets caught either by the police or FBI or whatever.
I believe that hundreds of people are killed, kidnapped, tortured, harassed, abused, get robbed and what not here in my country (Paksitan) everyday but there's hardly anything ever reported. I don't believe this report and even if the numbers are correct, I'm sure cases don't even get registered in places like Pakistan where there's no justice and systems are not as transparent as in US. |

Tony 18th August 2011 |
The biggest reason we have so much crime is that people know they will not be punished severely for their actions. Our country tends to lean on the fact our prisons are overcrowded and throwing more criminals in their is against there Constitutional rights because they have to share a room with four, six, and sometimes even eight other criminals. You tell me what is wrong with this picture. |
Allie 4th August 2011 |

Guess this figures are very reasonable, not because some countries keep records better or not. The breakdown is always there for u to see. |
Dare 28th July 2011 |
Be reasonable, the United States try to actually catch those criminals, thus their crimes are in the record.
As for the Muslim countries, I presume they barely keep a record of crimes the terrorists commit, what's the point?
For the rest, I don't know about those countries, they probably don't spend as much time, AND money to catch them criminals and having them on the record. |

Batman 10th July 2011 |
So you're telling me China has less than 751 crimes reported? LOL. |
Heinrich Bronkhorst 8th July 2011 |
It's true that those with higher population will have higher crimes. For instance Johannesburg in South Africa is the 4th most dangerous country in the world and South Africa's daily murder figures are that of United Kingdom's yearly figures.
Poor countries will have higher crime rates due to a lot of funding and corruption. Africa is a hub of corruption. People are born with it there as it is a way of life. I know this as I live in Africa and the UK, travelling frequently on business. The UK has a low crime rate, even compared to American crimes of equal stature, i.e. homicide, muggings and such. Look at Canada. Canada has more guns per person than the USA, yet the USA has a viral problem with gun crime. It's not the movies or games, because they have the same movies and games in Canada. It's the mentality. Canadians are good and friendly and actually have a great country. I'd love to live there one day. Americans have the mentality that if it moves it needs bullet holes. Simple as that. Look at their wars. Americans have killed more of their own and their Allied forces than the enemy killed theirs. The UK is focused on killing the enemy. The Americans are focused on killing everybody. |
Ajay 3rd July 2011 |
I live in India and I know the crime here, it should be in top 3. |

Vagina 28th April 2011 |
It would be nice to have this broken down by gender. I am sure that you would find that if you wanted to find a criminal, you would find them faster if you looked for someone with a vagina. The more violent the crime, the more likely they are to have a vagina but at least their victim will have had a vagina. At least when women kill people, they usually kill other women. That would be fine with me if they would leave men and children alone. |

Why can't we just all get a long and hold handds and bake cookies with unicorns on them. |
Shane 19th February 2011 |
Bear in mind that crimes are reported differently in each country. That makes comparisons like these almost worthless. Take the reporting of violent crimes in the UK. If you look at the statistics from the UK government website, just over half of those violent crimes recorded result in no injury to the victim. In the US, those crimes would not be recorded and included in the stats.
Until there is a universal recording method, or until someone is prepared to work through the various reports and standardize the numbers, these sort of figures shoud be taken with a grain of salt. |

im an Aussie and i feel sick at our gun control ive lived through a home invasion which took 5 calls from us i dont know how many other ppl called but 40 mins later they showed up if i had a gun it wouldn't of happened, now i know for a fact of other instances of police taking over 40 mins to attend other violent crimes Ive been a witness too.why cant we defend ourselves? |
Debow 17th February 2011 |
The USA is made up of most countries rejects,so we will always have high crime. We let anyone in, legal and not legal. Plus our prisons compared to most countries are like a resort area with bars, crime is prisons here highest in world also. Our country has crime from the white house to the streets. We worry more about what other countries are doing and not our own safety, our own education system. Drugs and crime are part of our culture. I would bet over 50 % of the people in America do some sort of drug. Freedom we have, but what price do we pay? |

Gernot: Blaming the high number of total crimes on the death penalty and lack of gun control is, in a word, silly.
Look at #2 on the list: The UK has very strict gun control (possession of a handgun anywhere is a minimum five-year prison sentence), and no death penalty.
And yet, we have five times their population and less than twice their number of crimes. Makes them more than twice as criminal as we are. |
Brian 9th January 2011 |
Anupam Katkar ,You're absolutely correct.Gernot ,Americans and their guns have saved far more lives than they've taken.I don't know where you're from but at some point in time Americans may very well saved your parents or grand parents. It's "trendy"for people to bash America until you need us to save you from some horrible tyrant bent on wiping you out.We have our problems for sure but most of us wouldn't live any where else. |
Anupam Katkar 20th December 2010 |
A compilation of statistics will have to take into account reported crimes. In a country with strong law enforcement, high crime-fighting budget and good technology, a significant proportion of crimes would be detected as opposed to a country which does not have these. This helps explain why USA tops the list. |
Central 20th December 2010 |
Pete,
So you believe that USA is the most populated country in the world. OK you are an american, we'v go that. :)
BTW - the link you have in the end of your post is just ONE TYPE of crime. See the difference? |

I am an american living in a middle class area in Brazil and almost everyone lives behind a gate with a big dog. It is virtually impossible to own a gun here so only the cops and robbers have them. The only places that even remotely resemble this place are the inner cities in the U.S.A. Kidnappings are epidemic here and they will hold you for your debit or credit card. Almost everyone I know here in Campinas Brazil has been robbed (by being put in fear ) at least once. You have two extremes with urban and suburban US being policed up the wazoo where joe sixpack almost allways has some minor criminal history ala his drinking and here in Brazil the complete opposite where everyone most of the time does in traffic and in other areas pretty much what they want ,Where should both societis be , I believe somewhere in the middle with a good effective police dept that is honest and deployed effectively where it is needed and not a judicial system that is a national business like in the USA. Both systems are very imperfect. The states needs the police and the judiciary out of Joe workingmans pockets and life, and Brazil needs help because overall people here live with fear. I miss the cops from the fifties and sixties they were like us working people and not actors like they seem to be today. |
Gernot 14th December 2010 |
Unfortunately America is full of crazy people who think that guns and violence are the answer. Their film industry has a lot to do with it, encouraging the idea that problems are solved by killing people. The US still has a death penalty which means that the official line is that killing people is OK.
The gun lobby is too powerful, and so everyone carries a gun, just as the junk food industry is too strong, and so the country is full of very fat people.
It's a tragedy. |

Amy Becker thats is the most unjustified sexist thing i have ever heard you cant just come on here and start spitting out personal opinions with no real relation to the topic involved. MAybe there are more males associated with violent crimes then females (if that is even true), but what makes you say that their victims are also male.. ever heard of a petifile domestic violence? the targets in these cases are children and often women. Women can be just as violent in men and to prove you wrong i hope you are a victim of a violent crime commit by a fellow women |

This doesn't really give you a good picture on a world level. First of all crime by number doesn't really do anything because variances in populations. Secondly, every country has different rules and laws, so we have people committing crimes in one country that's not considered a crime in another country. That's comparing countries' level freedom by how many laws they have without considering the severity or moderation of each law. Actually, come to think of it...I'd like to see those numbers. Who's truly freer on this planet. |
Scott 1st December 2010 |
The two most populous countries in the world don't even make the list?
#82 Montserrat had 751 crimes. So according to this, China and India had less than 751 crimes apiece? I notice a comment pointing out that Brazil isn't on the list, either. Isn't Sao
Paulo FAMOUS for it's crime? I'll bet the city alone dwarfs
the 751. |
Kenny harrowland 4th November 2010 |
Just as a note to all those claiming that USA got the highest because of the population, this isnt quite true, India and china have the majority when it comes to population, but still got a lower crime rate.
but the crime per capita is still more accurate though. |
Vinu 27th October 2010 |
Its totally dumb to justify the crime rate of US by comparing its population with Germany's...
in that case, the US crime rate is about 7 times than that of India's, while India's population is almost 4 times the US population. Justify this now! |
Sara 14th October 2010 |
Hahahaha, you guys, you don't realize what you're saying. The U.S. DOES lead in crime. The chart we're looking at is for TOTAL, not per capita. In order to see the highest crime rates per capita, you click the tab that says "per capita" (who woulda thunk?!), and then you can see that Dominica has the highest rate per capita. Besides, if you guys even knew what per capita meant, you'd know the U.S. was not the leader. It's common sense. |

And even less than Montserrat that has 751 crimes.

Mr.Mexican (Mexico) 2nd March 2009 |
Hello, "Ron (Boca Raton, Florida)" knows nothing about mexico, the tourist areas are not a problem. Mexico relies somewhat heavily on tourism for income, so guess what. 85% of the population is out to guard and protect you. It's the back alleys and drug hotspots that are crime infested. Just wanted to point that out. thanks |
Steven Harris (United States) 31st January 2009 |
To Quirel: You speak with the tone of someone who feels they may be somewhat of an authority, and yet you miss the most basic concept, as noted at the bottom of the list. That it has more to do with reporting and intervention of crime, than the actual prevalence of crime. And secondly, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the United States would have a higher crime rate by default simply because of it's larger geographic area, and much larger population. I feel you may be feeding too much on anti-everyone-else propaganda. |
Jason (USA) 17th January 2009 |
Read this again morons:
DEFINITION: Note: Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence. |
john (US) 18th October 2008 |
there is a note that you are missing at the bottom of the page
DEFINITION: Note: Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence.
this means that if law enforcement is not present or notified that crimes are not added to the tally, so the rate of crime in mexico may be higher per capita but this gragh wouldn't show it if the system of law enforcement was less efficient than in other countrys. |
Jack (UK) 12th September 2008 |
Leonard, these statistics cover all crime, not just gun crime. Also you should note, guns laws are strict (but not outrightly banned) in Britain, but criminals (not suprisingly) dont obey these laws. The UK is a hell of a lot more dangerous than outsiders are lead to believe. |
Leonard (USA) 23rd August 2008 |
WHAT!!?? How on earth does Britain have such a high crime rate? All guns are banned in Britain, surely it should appear at the bottom of the list?? |
Ron (Boca Raton, Florida) 2nd August 2008 |
The comments by Quirel about Mexico show that he/she knows nothing about Mexico. The tourist areas are a problem, but the rest of the country is rather peaceful. And that is where most of the real Mexican population resides. |

These stats are for total crimes and any stats are never going to be 100% accurate
example Mexico could have highest murder rate but they could have way less of other crimes
South Africa might have major gang problems but they might not have many car thiefs for example.... these stats are for "TOTAL CRIMES" and thats only the crimes that have been reported many crimes go un-reported or charges get dropped,etc.... and also depends on how accurate the stats they are getting from the police/government on these crimes happening and lots of times the governments edit or change stats also to make a country/city/town/etc... seem better or less violent then it really is..... news likes to do this also.. |
thing1 (united states) 31st October 2007 |
in answer to Quier's comment, it is correct, any smart person can do the math and figure out that while the populations may be different, America is still higher then any other. just go get a calculator, crunch some numbers to figure out what percentage the crime rate number is compared to the population of the country and you will find that about 7% of the us is on that list, and about 3% of Mexico is on that list, and 2% of Ireland is on that list. its not brain science, just smile math. which country has clouded jails? the US.which county has more stupid laws? the US. when you have so many laws, and so many restrictions, people are bound to rebel. in Costa Rica, there are few laws, they have no military, no speed limits, let they have few accidents, and fewer people on drugs because if its not illegal, it takes away the thrill of it so people be as likely to do it. anyone who wants to talk further on this issue can find me on live journal as 1gniht or on my space under Becker, URL loveofbass.

Quirel (United states.) 19th October 2007 |
OK. How about seeing this list according to population?
And there's NO way this list is accurate. Mexico is listed has having one fifteenth of the crimes of the United States.
Right. |
fabie (philippines) 29th September 2007 |
why crimes are increasing as the time is going old? |
Albert Kay (Singapore) 27th January 2007 |
The United States appears to stand out in this statistic, having four times as many crimes as Germany which is next on the list. However this is misleading as the population of the United States is about four times as high as the population of Germany. As a country with a high population is likely to have more crime (there are more people to commit crimes)
--------------------------------------------------------
I don't agree with the above statement...
What about India and China ?
I doubt that USA have population bigger than either one of the 2 countries.
India and China is not even at the Top 5 spots.... |

A woman, man, or teenager can and indeed should, be armed with courage, determination, spirit, and knowledge, whether or not they are armed with anything else, they should be ready for the offender with a save enough, non-lethal self defense weapon as a powerful stun gun in close encounter defense, or a pepper spray such as a mace gel, or a taser M-18 with enough distance capabilities to down the attacker, predator and or rapist before he gets close enough to inflict damage. I am a firm believer that if anyone interested in their own self defense will read our little booklet…”the facts about defense sprays and how to use them to bring criminals to their knees”…. will be on their way to be crime proof...We invite you to use some of our other “free” resources in the self defense store such as the “crime watch library” with a large selection of “free” crime prevention reports, or the “free” newsletter from “Drug Free America” with a wealth of information as to fend against drug addiction and related crimes, will be a aid in setting up a easy to use and effective self protection program which will keep you safe and sound from possible future attackers and violence. We are looking forward to show you how this is done with out frizzles and false costly promises mostly by just browsing our site which is definitely for “free” and without any obligations. Then following some of the steps outlined to physically fend for your self, using one of our very reasonably priced self defense weapons, self defense videos or a combination of both will assure you with just that, a safe and sound approach to protect yourself from crime now and in the future….”Check This Out At: http://www.ento-guard.com And Get A Free Crime Watch Report”… |

This chart is ready proof that "facts" relayed on the internet are often several degrees short of reality. I am not sure what methodology was used to arrive at these results; to assert that more crime is committed in Japan than Columbia is surely nonsense. Please explain how Jamaica (a country rife with murder, theft and corruption) can be less crime-laden than the Nordic paradise of Norway. In short, these numbers are f**ked. |

South Africa always appears in the top 4 in most cases (rape, murder, theft etc) and the lowest in policing, feeling safe etc. Yet America is top for total crime.. should it not be SA. We certainly dont feel safe and everyone I know has personally experienced crime or has a loved one who has had crime.
A friend of mine stays in New Zealand and we been there for extended stay (6 months) and never experienced crime or people that had exposure to crime. So where do their stats come from?
So how is this stats relative? |

The top three slots going to the US, Germany and the UK does not really indicate that crime is rampant in these societies. One should bear in mind that the level of documented crime in a society depends in large part on the willingness of that society to prosecute its criminals. The US experiences violence within its borders but hardly takes a lax attitude.
This is not the case everywhere. One can easily look around the world and find regimes that daily turn blind eyes to rampant violence. Stores can be ransacked, ethnic minorities can be persecuted, political enemies can be imprisoned, and women and children can be abused in their own homes without any government intervention. Such regimes can, because of the lower number of crimes they prosecute, claim a lower level of documented crime. The daily reality faced by their citizens is a different matter.
This is why any serious discussion of the true level of crime in a society takes into account the matter of official corruption and the political process in the country. |
