Somethings is wrong here South Africa not on this list? All i have ever heard is that SA has the highest crime rate in the world. I dont think this list is correct! When was the last time it was updated???

Oy - surely South Africa should be on this list? We do crime as well as we do rugby... these stats look really dodgy to me as Oz is winning and New Zealand, Sweden and Denmark feature and we don't!

One must drop there preconceptions when dealing with Facts. Beginning with the Myth that America has the most crime in the world. France does have a higher crime rate than post people think. Due to slew of immigration from 3rd world countries and an unarmed population. Facts are facts. There are slums and ghettoes in France and areas that law-enforcement have deemed no-go-zones. This is reality live with it.

I agree with the previous remarks. The country comparisons are meaningless because of the different standards adopted by the different governments. For example, according to this website Mexico doesn't even record kidnappings and we all know that it is a big problem there. Many of these third-world countries simply don't have the resources nor the wherewithal to compile accurate statistics, after all, it would otherwise present a pretty grim picture. Similarly, many totalitarian governments purposely hide or water down the extent of crime in their countries. The fact that almost every country on this list is a first world European or North American country proves my point.

I've noticed the "crime statistics" on this website seem to strangely paint the USA as having less crime than most other Western countries. The rate of homicide in the USA is at least 4 times that of Australia yet we are supposed to have more crime victims? Perhaps because the Police here are more likely to do their job than the police in the USA or perhaps because the owners of this website are obviously American.

Both me and someone in my French class found it really hard to believe that France had a higher crime rate than the United States.

Can anyone say why the african countries have been left of this list?

I can tell you that those countries above would not even make it to the top of that list or even the top 50 spots should you have included african countries into your study.

Could you do this type of survey but focusing on african nations and South Africa in particular?

Comparing international crime victim statistics must be done with great caution. Statistics compiled by the United Nations are based on surveys that specify that crimes be counted based on each country's interpretation of what constitute a "crime victim". Some countries may include victims of misdemeanor offences, where a fine is issued while others may only count imprisionable offences. Also, how counting the victims takes place may affect the statistics. Some countries may survey the population to identify the number of crime victims, while others may rely on victims reporting a breach of the law, or only count cases that make it to court, and even then count just the most seriously affected victim. How the statistics are compiled could greatly affect the statistics. Population surveys may detect unreported victims, while crime reports may not count those victims that do not come forward, even if the crime is reported. Because there is so much inconsistency in these statistics, they might also be a quality measure of the standard and efficiency of law enforcement and the criminal justice system of a country, rather than having anything to do with actual prevalence of crime and victimisation.

I dont believe these stats.
Never experienced crimes here nor have my friends or family.
Also what happened to all the other countries which were constansly on the top 10 list, where New Zealand did not even feature.
I think it is a case of selective data and this is just confusing more than anything else.

This excludes Russia, which is by far the most criminal country in the world per capita.
