Its also about how strict the laws are folks :)

In the UK we have a draconian system, so we have a lot of broken laws.

I am from new Zealand it looks correct to me.. I have had 2 friends murdered, cars stolen, mugged, petty theft, identity theft..most people don't even report crime unless its involved violence or is serious if 29.4% of the population have been victims of crime it even sounds low to me.. I think its correct.. any tourist walking around here alone should be careful its good advice

Crime in countries like South Africa came down a lot since the end of Apartheid when SA was a really violent place at war with its own people.
Last eyar, 2010, was the FIFA Worldcup in South Africa, and with a million visitors swarming all over the country no one suffered serious crime.
However, in recent years many visitors to OZ and NZ have been killed and raped...and the UK and USA have always been very dangerous.I worked in london in securiy and I know that.
The SA government is putting in huge resources to fight crime, and from my own observations travelling around, the SA Police are now the best in the world...and crime is definitely under control.
Countries like the UK, Canada, OZ and NZ however, have really huge safety and crime problems, due to a non existent police, very lax law enforcement, and non sentencing policy even for the worst crimes...as of course the highest drug abuse in the world...

i find it amazing that the US has a higher total# of crime than the UK, but the number of crime victims is higher in the UK than in the US

there might be some misinterpretation in that list. it just doesnt sound correct. maybe it actually represents a criminal system thats better published and publicized than the REAL crime-infested places of the world.

What a ridiculous list. I would say this could be the list of the countries with the most and best organised and active police and crimeregistration in the world. Pakistan is not on the list, and even Thailand is not on the list. What more to say. Statistics as this is almost a crime in itself.

I wonder why isn't there one Muslim Country listed amoungst the top 20, whereas many are mentioned in several other statistics and facts.

I'm surprised none is mentioned in the top 10 of this list!

Those crime rates must be a reflection of the quaility of reporting and transparency of governments and institutions of developed countries versus 3rd world countries such as South Africa and India, where other websites show the crime rates and types of crime are out of control.

Canadians report the most crimes. Someone sent me a substancial newspaper clipping about a man in Toronto that walked in to an empty office building and was caught stealing stamps. I laughed so hard I almost fell of my chair. So I'm estimating by this data that most countries like UK & US are doctoring their numbers so that the higher ups can show some progression and maintain their well paid jobs and prestige. I have lived in the US and now the UK and I am concerned about the violent crime I have seen. I wish we could just be honest about our faults.

Funny how the top nations where crime is most rampant are also the ones that preach 'gun control' the most.

It's an interesting phenomenon, really... because when you disarm the law abiding citizen, you make a criminal's job safer! Plus THEY will still remain armed, as they don't give a rat's behind about the law anyway (hence they're criminals, lol).

Interesting stats.. and, living in one of those anti-gun nanny state countries myself (Canada) and working for a law enforcement agency, I totally agree with the figures represented above.

Read the definition above:

"
Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence.

"Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence."

Indeed. It's no coincidence that most of these are countries with relatively trust-worthy police forces.

Well i lived in 2 countries now. Australia and South Africa. The difference in crime is evident on the news channel. South Africa has 5 murders a night on the news and Australia has 1 murder a month on the news. That is why this graph must surely use data that differ when considering each country.

@Angie:
There are other sorts of crimes y'know, such as robbery, rape, assaults, etc. And those types of crimes you always hear on the news all the time.

Oy - surely South Africa should be on this list? We do crime as well as we do rugby... these stats look really dodgy to me as Oz is winning and New Zealand, Sweden and Denmark feature and we don't!

One must drop there preconceptions when dealing with Facts. Beginning with the Myth that America has the most crime in the world. France does have a higher crime rate than post people think. Due to slew of immigration from 3rd world countries and an unarmed population. Facts are facts. There are slums and ghettoes in France and areas that law-enforcement have deemed no-go-zones. This is reality live with it.

I agree with the previous remarks. The country comparisons are meaningless because of the different standards adopted by the different governments. For example, according to this website Mexico doesn't even record kidnappings and we all know that it is a big problem there. Many of these third-world countries simply don't have the resources nor the wherewithal to compile accurate statistics, after all, it would otherwise present a pretty grim picture. Similarly, many totalitarian governments purposely hide or water down the extent of crime in their countries. The fact that almost every country on this list is a first world European or North American country proves my point.

I've noticed the "crime statistics" on this website seem to strangely paint the USA as having less crime than most other Western countries. The rate of homicide in the USA is at least 4 times that of Australia yet we are supposed to have more crime victims? Perhaps because the Police here are more likely to do their job than the police in the USA or perhaps because the owners of this website are obviously American.

Both me and someone in my French class found it really hard to believe that France had a higher crime rate than the United States.

Can anyone say why the african countries have been left of this list?

I can tell you that those countries above would not even make it to the top of that list or even the top 50 spots should you have included african countries into your study.

Could you do this type of survey but focusing on african nations and South Africa in particular?

Comparing international crime victim statistics must be done with great caution. Statistics compiled by the United Nations are based on surveys that specify that crimes be counted based on each country's interpretation of what constitute a "crime victim". Some countries may include victims of misdemeanor offences, where a fine is issued while others may only count imprisionable offences. Also, how counting the victims takes place may affect the statistics. Some countries may survey the population to identify the number of crime victims, while others may rely on victims reporting a breach of the law, or only count cases that make it to court, and even then count just the most seriously affected victim. How the statistics are compiled could greatly affect the statistics. Population surveys may detect unreported victims, while crime reports may not count those victims that do not come forward, even if the crime is reported. Because there is so much inconsistency in these statistics, they might also be a quality measure of the standard and efficiency of law enforcement and the criminal justice system of a country, rather than having anything to do with actual prevalence of crime and victimisation.

I dont believe these stats.
Never experienced crimes here nor have my friends or family.
Also what happened to all the other countries which were constansly on the top 10 list, where New Zealand did not even feature.
I think it is a case of selective data and this is just confusing more than anything else.

This excludes Russia, which is by far the most criminal country in the world per capita.
