Why blame God for creating the Tsunami? Obviously he has a perfect reasoning for it.

Disasters are mostly man made. Those who are not alert and prepared suffer or die.If a disaster occurs in forest or desert where no settlements are there, they will not have any impacts. If we had developed an early warning system like, floods and cyclones we could have minimized the impacts of Tsunami also. The strong buildings even on the sea shore have not been damaged. Those who could reach to elevated places are saved. So we should not blame nature but our carelessness, lethargy, greed and dependency on super natural things has made us to suffer. Hope we learn a lesson from this and get prepared and versatile ( be strong) to face future disasters which are bound to occur from time to time.May wisdom prevail upon us.

God did not cause the tsunami. I agree with everyone who has said this. I'm not saying i dont believe in him, but i dont believe he would do this. It's just general knowledge. Sry but thats the truth. What cause the tsunami was an earthquake that was caused by 2 earth plates that connected and the force snapped them. So if that is what caused the Tsunami, then god didnt.

This hasnt been the only disaster the earth has felt~! There's been many catastrophes throughout Earths history with higher death tolls, the Tangshan Earthquake for example had 500,000 deaths and influenza killed around 25 million~!Of course its only human to suggest a power above us caused it~! Those catastrophes brought up the same question about the end when they ocurred hundreds of years ago but with time the fear and questioning the end faded as it is doing currently~!

God caused the tsunami? People die every day from many causes and eventually we all die. It's just a matter of when. This may have caused much hurt here on earth, but look at all the help and service that has been offered by other countries. Good has come from this also. Both good and bad happen in this life, but i believe that we are on the way to a greater place, heaven. Some get their sooner and some later, death is just the end of this life and onto another. Some die by tsunami's and some by natural causes. Who knows, maybe this will encourage people to invent better ways to predict tsunami's that could save even more people in the future.

I disagree! This has become an argument between Creationists and Evolutionists. Yes, the tsunamis, earthquakes, our life spent on Earth, down to fact we are who we are, our fate is ALL in the hands of God. Atheists, don't be ever so lightheaded-if there was no God, then HOW could we human beings be alive ? We could not choose to live on Earth all together when there is all this racism/prejudice! We could not form ourselves! Ever thought about that ? There HAS to be a super being, God. You know what Atheists? Your very rejection to God is the works of Satan, believe it or not! Just because you can't see Him, He's not on the phone with you, or to hold your hand does not mean He is not there, but IS there in the spirit, in the soul. So ok, if you are still dissaproving of these FACTS, then what are your thoughts? You can't hold them, see them, but they are there, and all of them come from your soul, it boils down to that. We have been placed on Earth to choose our destiny where we'll live eternally. Were sent here for all a purpose. I know someone has commented on about if God had mercy He would not let babies and children die. Ok, in the Bible there is a proverb"Just as Heaven is Higher than the Earth, My ways are higher than yours." I have said this from memory. What it means is that we should not question God's ways, because His meanings and ideas are better than ours, His views are higher than ours. So, by children dying, God meant a better place for them, Eternal life/peace in Heaven. Their fate, could be the FACTOR of YOUR decidion whether you belive in God or not. See the trick you're putting yourself into? THINK about it ! I'm getting tired here, and could go on for hours. Just hope everyone would start believing in God. Shanae, 18.

God causing a tsunami? Mohammed... Let me tell you: your God as well as my God (who is the Same one anyway) has said: "Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhoood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done."

This is history from BEFORE Abraham, who is the forefather of the Islam, Judaism and Christianity.

The tsunami was a real disaster; what really needs to happen is the early warning system has to be reinforced better. There was a large time lapse between the earthquake itself and the tsunami; if there had been any warning at all of a possible tsunami resulting from an earthquake there probably would have been much fewer casualties, seeing that there was ample warning time. Hopefully in the future a warning system will be in place.

What is Christopher on about? Vengeful gods indeed? It was an earthquake which lead to a tsunami...a natural disaster, that's all. Yes, it was a tragedy, but let's learn from this. Blaming God, or insisting that God was anything to do with it is silly and naive.

Disasters happen, and have done so for ages. They will continue for the next ages to be. I agree with Roland, that the earth has been moving with tectonic plates causing earthquakes and the earth is flowing with lava causing volcanic action. The planet earth is changing every single moment, and will do so for eternity or until something causes it to blow itself (which I doubt) up or some large solar impact plows into it. It would take something less the size of its own moon to completely destroy it. Then if it has any stability at all, it would repair itself---taking millions of years. But would it become a Mars, with but minute bits of life. Yes, the planet is growing with too many people and emissions of gases created by man. Something has to give, and my short novel should be exhausted. Man may destroy themselves, but beyond anything else---the earth will likely continue.

Guys, this is a earth disaster, caused by numerous affects of living on a large piece of rock. Take your religious opinions - and flush them down the toilet. Obviously religion is man-made, and believing that this tsunami happened because of human "sin" is illogical. A majority of the worst hit nations are also the most religious.

Jamie - What you are looking for is the graph of the Foreigners - Death toll . This one is about the citizens of the affected countries. I hope you realize that foreign tourists were not the only ones affected even though they are the ones receiving all the attention?

I'm a bit confused by this graph. What about the thousands of dead tourists and their nationalities? Shouldn't we, if possible, try to measure the count by nationality of the causualities, and not by merely if they were in one country or another when they died?

Landmasses on this planet have been moving and shaking since the Earth's crust began cooling, eons ago. Earthquakes are nothing new. We humans place our settlements in locations vulnerable to natural disasters. Our global population has exploded in the past 200 years, and we now inhabit areas that previously were unsettled or only lightly populated. No wonder we see an increase in deaths and tragedy. Personally, I don't think God is deciding when or when not to unleash an earthquake. 200 years ago, we knew nothing about plate tectonics or basic geography. Without such knowledge, it was easy to attribute disasters to the work of God. Today we (should) know better. Look at California. Geologists have evidence that major earthquakes have shaken that coastline since LONG before any humans made their way from Asia into North America. The quakes happened, we just weren't there to know about them. There is no doubt that there will be more earthquakes there in the future. It's inevitable. And more importantly, the quakes will come REGARDLESS of how many people live there, or how they choose to live their lives. They could pray from sun up to sunset and otherwise live strictly by the book of Leviticus and STILL, the quakes and devastation will happen. This isn't blasphemy, it's simply recognizing the physical nature of the planet on which we live. We have learned a lot during the past 3,000 years. I for one, will not subscribe to the Flat Earth Society and what I believe to be superstitious nonsense. If we don't want human suffering to occur in future earthquakes, let's get up off our knees and take action to minimize impacts of future quakes. Strengthen buildings, improve detection and warning systems. If we are serious about reducing death and suffering, we could take the drastic action of moving our settlements well away from known fault lines and areas prone to flooding. But since I know that will never happen (can you imagine all that valuable coastline being vacated and left to nature... hardly!), let's put our scientists to work to develop workable solutions, and then vote for politicians who will implement reasonable policies. Thanks for providing this forum, where I can finally get these thoughts off my chest. Wishing every one of you readers a safe and prosperous 2005!

If random natural accurances can cause such a death toll then why use prayer when you can develop real early warning technologies? This talk of armageddon is such a waste of time. Science can solve problems and there is nothing beyond human understanding.

Instead of asking the question "Why did God let this happen" or "lets blame someone or something else". Perhaps the better question is "What are you doing or what are you going to do about it!" Where is your compassion right now?

From what took place by Tsunami on 26th December 2004 and with the so many advanced scientific development the world is going through, such a disaster would have been detected. But because such a disaster is beyond human understanding, my comment is that its only God who has control to everything. We can apply science but if anything is beyond human understanding, it becomes a disaster only God has the answer. We just need to turn to God! May God be Worshipped!

It is or was a disaster. But not the biggest by far. As recently as 1976 there was a Earthquake in China that claimed Official 255.000 lives (Chinese officials) but Estimated death was 650.000 lives. Was that Armageddon??? Year before last in Iran (same date) over 25.000 . What has God to do with it? If he has any mercy at all, no baby's or children should have died.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan called for a major logistical operation to help a half-dozen countries hit by Sunday's tsunami, which by the latest count had killed more than 124,000 people. The UN emergency relief operations coordinator said the death toll was approaching 150,000 and Sweden's foreign minister said it could go as high as 200,000.

India's grief over Sunday's tsunami has not yet given way to anger, with most people too stunned by the awesome power of nature to blame their government. But the media are beginning to ask the question was the bureaucracy fatally complacent? Reports say the top brass of the Indian Air Force knew their Nicobar air base had been submerged at least an hour before the waves struck the mainland coast.
The Indian Meteorological Department knew of the earthquake within minutes of its occurance in Indonesia but it informed the Home Ministry only after the tsunami had struck, a ministry official told Reuters.

Julie mentions vengeful gods. I agree with that point. How else to explain these thousands of deaths?

Traditionally, the Judeo-Christian God, considered the most supreme and perfect being in the universe, has been ascribed the following necessary attributes: omniscience (all-knowing), omnipresence (present everywhere at all times and at once), omnipotence (almighty and powerful) and benevolence (all good and caring).

How, then, did a God as powerful and benevolent as this allow such a thing to happen? If he is benevolent then he cannot also be omnipotent, for a God who has both these attributes would have wanted to, cared to and been able to prevent such a catastrophe.

Perhaps, though omnipotent, He is not benevolent. That might explain why, although it was within His power to stop the tsunami, He simply chose not to: God has His own reasons and we are not to ask why. However, this answer will not suffice since by definition God is perfect. Being perfect, He must of necessity not merely be omnipotent but benevolent as well.

Maybe we need another Socrates to give us proper answers to questions we raise in times of doubt.

Hey, What about Atlantis? The island-nation of Atlantis is said to have existed over 11,000 years, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Apart from being abundant in natural resources, it was also a major centre of trade and commerce. It's people were described as well-educated, using advanced technology and fabulously wealthy. It is aside to have disappeared into the sea, due to an earthquake caused by gigantic submarine volcanic explosions, triggering off a massive flood. Though there is no direct evidence of its existence, it holds great fascination for many, including scientists.
My mind jumped to that when I first heard the news about the tsunami. Hope some of those small islands out there haven't done an Atlantis.

Gods using the seas as a weapon/message is very common in the religious texts of all religions. Who has't heard of the Noah's Ark - one of the best known stories from the Old Testament where God decided to punish evil humanity by wiping it off the Earth, but spared one virtuous man, Noah. There is a similar story in hindu mythology - 'The matsya Avatar'.
No wonder many survivors of the flood are saying that they were expecting to see the Noah's Ark when they saw the deluge. (http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=42111)

The sudden high death toll makes you wonder about the reasons behind this catastrophe. How to figure this in the larger context of life? Global warming is the reason according to scientists. A lack of an early warning system is the favourite for governments and journalists of developed countries. Some are putting it on divine retribution (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/973408.cms) and others on vengeful gods. What are the philosophers saying? How are the religious leaders explaining this?

The tragic outcome of the tsunami disaster is a wake up call for the south Asian nations. The difference in the death tolls of the affected nations is noteworthy. BBC says that although Malaysia lies close to the epicenter, Indonesia, much of its coastline was spared widespread devastation because it was shielded by Sumatra. The Indian subcontinent faced the wrath of the tsunami as the southern coastline is part of the peninsula with no major landmass in between the epicenter & the coastline.
