How many US patents are "non residential" where the research and the profit making take place abroad. We have some very consumer unfriendly patent laws in this country, especially in regards to medical patents.

When looking at the patents granted under the 'per capita' tab and the patents granted under the 'totals' tab both sets of figure say they are 'per capita' - though they give very different country rankings. Can you please clarify the difference? MAybe the figures under the 'totals' tab are wrongly labelled per million pop.
I'd be very grateful for your help.
