its not dollars and GDP that we must be counting. the HPI is more reliable to see the situation in any country.having lack of peaceful envionment and the lack of the freedom of expression is also a kind of poverty. its not like the numericals associated with income that counts. |

China 28% ??!! What!!?? There are hundreds of thousands of people in China living in poverty. Based on how far off China is I have to assume the whole list is way off. |

I think India is a corrupt country and China is the boss of all the countries in corruption. All the ministers of the country eat all the money which they take from us in the form of taxes for the development of the country and then say that we have done the development much before than the time decided. It's all because of are ministers that people don't get their wages fully according to their hard work and it happens specially with the labours because of all this today each country has an imaginary poverty line for their own country.
Just because a person cannot manage some basic needs for his family he is considered poor and the poverty line. |

It is a huge generalization to say that taxation is high in New Zealand due to many people on the dole. The unemployment rate in New Zealand is 6%. Considering the global economic crisis, this is not that high. Taxes are necessary to pay for public services, like health, education, infrastructure etc, not just social security. |
Rick 17th July 2010 |
New Zealand does not have a poverty line for a reason - they do not want anyone to know how many people are actually living in poverty there. It's no secret though that many Kiwis leave because the wages are low and the taxes are high. The taxes are high because many people are on the dole. |

Hi.
I am doing a speech in school on world poverty. I know that China does not share their economical status to others because they think that people will figure out secrets about their corrupt government. So, how do you know that these statistics on certain corrupt countries are true? My email is estherseim@sbcglobal.net. If you can answer my question, that would be great!
Thank You,
Esther Seim (12 years old) |

John 19th January 2010 |
In essence, the above measurement of poverty should only be used when measuring an individual state's current progress based on its own predefined measurements of what constitutes poverty and not used as a benchmark to gauge the progress of every nation inclusively.
It's my opinion, that poverty should be measured by a number of weighted factors, such as Access to housing, healthcare, food, water etc. also including disposable income that takes into account CPI.
I think we'll find, when measured in this way, many developing countries are much worse off than the numbers above indicate, and that many developed countries are not as well off as the above numbers indicate. |

excuse me Mr.Dashing pince but Wikipedia is not a fact checked encyclopidia so there is now way to know if that article states the facts or something a person made up or guessed. i personaly would not recomend its use to make a point as it is not excepted as a veritable source by any high school or college. not to be rude but next time i would use a more reliable source next time.
your information was great i enjoyed your site. |

I love the fact that most the people on this bulletin are talking about how these stats might be a little off. Although that is important I guess....that's not the big picture....there are FIVE countries tied at 80 PERCENT living in poverty!!! These are not the things we need to be worrying about! we NEED to be getting out there and doing something about it! |
Dashingprince (UK) 14th December 2008 |
The UN has the UK at 8.2% poverty and the USA at 15.1% poverty. The CIA estimate data they do not have access to government data.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poverty#Governance
Also half the average wage in the USA does NOT include access to health care or higher education. All citizens in the UK on half the average wage have full access to both. |

TO JEF THE ABORINGINALS OF AUSTRALIA ARE NOT IN POVERTY BECAUSE THEY RECEIVE FREE HOUSING,FREE MEDICAL, FREE UNIVERSITY AND SOCIAL SECURITY. MORE THAN THE AVERAGE..WHY DO YOU DOUBT THAT WE ARE NOT ON THIS LIST WHEN AUSTRALIA HAS A SMALL POPULATION WITH THE LARGEST MINERAL DEPOSITS IN THE WORLD.PLUS THE MOST SQUARE AREA PER PERSON THAN ANY OTHER COUNTRIES. YES WE DO HAVE POVERTY BUT IT IS LESS THAN 0.01%. |

I am not sure the ranking is accurate regarding the population below poverty line given the situation in Zimbabwe. How possible is it that Zimbabwe is better off than Zambia on this ranking. |

"Australia is not in this lisy. No poor in Australia? I doubt it. The Aboriginals have it pretty tough"
Actually, Mate, Aboriginals get all kinds of bonuses and Government grants, they are quite well off. |
Yes (North Pole) 31st March 2008 |
What's the point of this list? All those nations have different factors. A man with an income below poverty in US has most likely a higher income than a middleclass man in Zimbabwe. The best way to find which country is the poorest is to go buy Per Capita income on the BNP. |
Jef (USA) 25th March 2008 |
Australia is not in this list. No poor in Australia? I doubt it. The Aboriginals have it pretty tough. |
Thomas Kowalski (Corona, CA, USA) 11th January 2008 |
We should be ashamed that the U.S. has a 12% poverty rate. I realize that many third world countries underestimate their poor by artificially setting a low poverty line (I'm sure Tunisia, China, and Malaysia have much more poverty than state). However, the developed countries have no excuse.
Kudos to Lithuania, Belgium, and especially Taiwan! I guess the small countries know how to do it. |

what percentage of Qatar live under the poverty line? |
Anonymous (USA) 4th September 2007 |
USA is the richest nation. We just spend much more than we earn which is fine in the short term. It can be repaid. Many people survive on less that $1 a day. I could if the cost of living was less than $1 a day. |
Luis Escobedo (Houston Texas) 13th July 2007 |
Poverty is like Beuty a subjective quality only to be judged by the eys of the beholder.
The best way to measure poverty is by counting the number of toilets with running water per capita, if you do not have at least One toilet per every 2 persons therfore you are poor. |
Raqib (Lucerne) 8th July 2007 |
After this list one could easily proclaim Tunisia to be one of the richest countries, at least in a better situation than most European and North American countries. How funny!
This again shows how ridiculous statistics can become if applied inappropriately. The main culprit in this misleading study is the definition of poverty line. Poverty line level in the USA can not be the same as in Thailand. And if one would normalize the data between countries to obtain a common poverty line, also then it will not serve the purpose because this will lower the line for richer countries while raising it for the poor countries. I'm not a statistician, but I think there should be some descent studies to find out better solutions for this problem or this kind of statistics will m remain just a game of numbers without delivering any practical information. |
mez (internet) 22nd April 2007 |
what is the percentage of people below the poverty line???????????????? |
alguien (Argentina) 8th February 2007 |
This stats are very different from those in "people living under $1 dollar a day" because each government defines the poverty line as it wants to.
If a country defines poverty to be "people living under $0.50" it's not the same than another that defines it as "people living under $11".
What in some countries are considered 'poor', in others are considered 'middle class'. That's why this ranking is not very objective. |
Argentina (U.S.A) 1st February 2007 |
I just read that to be considered under the line of poverty people must be living on $1.08 (US money in 1993) which is equivalent to about $1.40 US money now. No one can live on that. People cannot even live on $10 US dollars a day. I think the poverty line needs to be adjusted. |

Dear Editors , thank you for providing us with this great information that is always important to know , my question is why and how did u put Eritrea and Ethiopea at the 50% zone while most of thier population are suffering hunger due to the war that was going on and due to bad governments , i think u should revise it, becouse when i see both countries and hear that the 50% thing cant match them ,,please explain this for us if it is possible with u, thank you inadvance , God bless you |

Even though china has low GDP per capita, but, with deligence and having trader exellence, many chinese can earn income for themself and their family. I live in Australia and there are a lot of Chinese immigrated here and they become more and more powerful in Australian economy now.Since I have been here for 8 years I have never seen Chinese homeless people at all. Consider Singapore and Taiwan, 100 years ago it was just empty and poor island but when Chinese immirated there they changed them into prosperity of treaesure island and become economic powers in present day. |

its quite simply because the black africans decided they were pissed off at the white people, kicked them out and then realised that they didn't know jack about how to organise the things the whites ran...at least that is the case in Zimbabwe.

To Rich:I am a black African and I find it disgusting that there are still people who are so ignorant on this planet. I currently have a 4.0+ GPA, and have family attending Colombia, Johns Hopkins and UCLA who are anything but brainless. A lot of the corruption and killing going on in Africa is a result of colonialism, not of jealousy or stupidity. |

the exact definition of below the poverty line is: each nation sets it's own poverty line, then the number of people living below this income level is divided by the total number of nationals. The quotient is then multiplied by 100. |

What are is the exact definition of "below the poverty line". I thought it was living on less than $1 a day? With regard to India, its population here is noted to have 25 % of its population under the poverty line. But here(http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/eco_pop_und_1_a_day) its shows that 44.2% of its population are under the $1 dollar a day mark. Similar anomolies occur with Bangladesh, here its noted to have 45% of its pop. below the poverty line, whereas around 29% of its pop. is below the poverty line. Comments? |
phods 4th August 2005 |
Isnt there some fundamental problem with this comparison when the poverty definitions of different countries are not same. China considers only 10% of its population below poverty line and in Canada it is 16.2%? |

You might want to rethink that, Danny. Why are thousands of Iraqis, Afghan and other immigrants coming over to the US? Because it's a rich nation. The US is almost at the bottom of this chart. |
Danman 10th April 2005 |
Really USA is the poorest country. Its debt runs into the quintrillions and can never be repaid. That is why Saddam Hussein had to be overthrown. He wanted all the Arab oil exporters to trade in Euros. The truth of the US deficit is that it spells ruin for the USA. |

Im only 15 and I have a bright future ahead of me and I love to help out the poor. Just last summer I seen this homeless guy down town; I had a couple of dollars on me and went up to him and talked but also pulled out some money I handed it to him and i began to cry becasue homelessness is a hard thing to look at. My future career is going into the Peace Core. Thats the perfect job for me! Im in 9th grade and next year some people are going to be an exchanged student I think they are going some where in england. I talked to my mom about it and i told her that could be a start for the furure!! That might be the only trip she'll have to pay for me. So I think I made it. Ill have extra change on me at all times.
Sincerly,
Jessica |
