Outcome of the recent fuel subsidy strike in Nigeria is that petrol price is fixed at N97 per liter, which is equivalent to $0.61 at prevailing exchange rate of N160/$. The chart should be updated regularly, if possible weekly due to the daily changes in fuel and pump prices, especially in economies where there is deregulation. |

Dr. Sunday Ige. 13th January 2012 |
these figures left me wondering where the minister of Petroleum resources of Nigeria got the figure she quoted to support her assertionthat PMS is cheaper in Nigeria than it is in Ghana.
In any case, she probably forgot that Nigeria is Oil producing. I wish to remind her that she will do well to compare us to oter major oil producing countries like LIbya, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Venezuela and Iran |

Going by the present situation in Nigeria, indeed for those who knew Nigeria and what obtained in reality, thus the common Nigeria ordinary citizen is among the top most in term of living standard world over. The cost of living and income per head is such measured as second to non. With the present predicament in term of apparent difficulties on the side of ordinary Nigerian, there is a need for the present administration to reduce the cost of petroleum product for the teeming masses to benefit most. However, regardless of the plight of common NIGERIAN mass the price was just added, a situation most unfortunate. |

Dr. Ajay. You are correct. Which makes this an almost useless chart. Also at the top of the column it says "amount" not "ratio". Poorly designed chart and not nearly as useful as one would be that had actual pump prices. |

I'm WIlshire. I'm from India.. the price of petrol here is increasing at such a staggering rate that now i'm afraid to use my bike!!
I cant provide full statistical details, but we roughly earn 20,000 ruppees a month. We pay various bills, taxes, loans, etc.. We're a normal middle-class family.
The amount we spend on fuel is about a few thousands per month.
We use a motorbike which return a mileage or 45km to 50km per litre. almost 100 miles per gallon of petrol.
Now imagine If we used a car which chugs more petrol!! We'd be spending a big chunk out of our monthly income!
The price of petrol is now slightly more than 70 rupees a litre. Just last month is was about 63 rupees a litre!!
Compared to the current inflation, average salary, petrol is becoming dearer to us each passing day! |
Rizvi 16th May 2011 |
In India the ordinary petrol price is 1.6 USD (Rupees 68) The cost of Super unleaded fuel is more than this amount.
The government is cutting down the subsidy, further price rise is expected in coming months.
It is extremely high for Indians as more than 75% of the people earn less than 0.4 USD (Rupees 20) per day. |
Jerry Dunn 15th May 2011 |
Although it's not clearly stated, at the bottom of the chart there is a statement that the "Units (are the): Ratio of Gasoline Price to World Average", the average being 1.0, or 100% of the average, NOT $1.00 U.S./liter. Example: United States pays 0.77, or 77% of the world average whereas the U.K. pays 1.92; 192% of the average.
Therefore the published numbers are the countries' ratios to the overall world average on that day. |

One would suppose, governments (especially developing countries) would try cushion its citizenry from high fuel costs. How do we expect to boost development when a key factor of production is un affordable? Taxing fuel to me is wrong, more so when there is so much wastage in government expenditures; this retards economic growth. I also think for Kenya's case, there should be no cartels/independent crude oil importers; and if necessary the government should subsidize the cost of importation |

It's complete nonsense that the price of gas at the pump can fluctuate so much. Once gas is available at a gas station, it is a delivered and finished product ready for consumption. In reality, it's been through all the production and distribution steps and is ready for sale. In other words, raw oil was purchased at X price, on X date, and transformed into gas... so once it's been turned into gas, there is no reason for the price to change (all costs have been covered).
So, how can anybody justify fluctuating gas prices at the pump? I could understand the price changing as different "batches" of gas are delivered, since the cost of the oil changes between production schedules, but overnight fluctuation is bogus. Other products in the world are subject to fluctuations in the market, such as coco beans, but you don't see fluctuating chocolate bar prices. |

There is definatley no reason for Americans to whinge about fuel prices. None at all. By not refuelling on certain days....and especially by making it public on facebook...the stock market is going to push the price up to cut the difference....which punishes everyone but the fuel companies. want to make a difference? buy a 1.4 liter freaking VW golf instead of a Suburban for your groceries. It is probably faster than your 5.8 liter American built V8 anyway...and more reliable. |

Isn't it funny how some countries are just plain GREEDY and keep on taking no matter what the populations conceses are about the costs .Is it because we are just followers and not leaders .Sadam once said ,you can have all the oil you want ,as long as my people only pay $.05 a gallon for their gas.We some day will be on the buying end when we run out .We will have only one group of politations to blame ,the ones in power now .We are not a country of various sourses of transportation ,we for the most part depend on the auto to get places .I say we should sell our oil at the best price and we only pay the very minimum. When we buy products from other world countries we pay their going price and yet they get the best price. It's a game of who ever has all the toys in his box wins the game.Thank you . |
Shannon (US) 2nd March 2008 |
These numbers do not refer to a price. They're a ratio of the price of gas in each state to the average world price. Cuba and Mexico, with ratios of 1, have gas prices that are exactly the average world price. |
Clear Thought (South Africa) 12th January 2008 |
The major differences in price arise from:
1. Taxes (especially UK)
2. Transport and refining costs (one reason countries with significant oil resources generally have cheaper gasoline)
3. Government cross-subsidies (e.g. Iran where petrol is sold below costs.)
Interesting that in Iran in 2007 the government acted to reduce the cost of the cross-subsidy by rationing gasoline. I can't recall whether the price was increased or not, or whether there was a separate price for gasoline purchased above the monthly allowance. |
Richard (Australia, Adelaide) 4th January 2008 |
In Australia it is about US$1.25 a litre at the moment. There seems to be some other errors too. When i was in Japan a few months ago, petrol was trading at US$1.35 a litre, and in South Korea it was trading at almost $2 a litre. |

I would like to know what the average cost for a gallon of diesel fuel is in maybe Germany vrs the average for a gallon of gas in the US. Then if the average diesel car in Europe get twice the mileage as a gas car in the US the average European pays less per mile per travel. Then make the same calculation not including the gas taxes that drive up the cost of fuel in Europe. The European people get benefits from those taxes in excess of the benefits US drivers derive from their gas taxes making driving effectively even cheaper in Europe.

What bothers me is that Canada is a gross petroleum exporting country. Yet we're paying the same prices as petroleum importing nations. If you note the other exporting countries (Saudi, Kuwait, etc), you'll see that Canadians are paying far more then should be expected. Why, as an exporting nation, are Canadians held hostage to the whims of international petroleum speculators - while major oil producers continue to see record profits? Don't expect "the government" to help: after all, with every fuel increase, they're joyfully lining federal coffers with more tax dollars. Am I cynical? You bet. Everybody who can is screwing us over. |

I must say that this list is fairly accurate. .95/liter US$ is right around what you would be paying for gas right now here in Canada 1.03/ liter CND$. |
