In India, alcoholism is in two forms. One is when people want to chill out after hard days work or during the weekends. Another worst form of alcoholism is to consume alcohol merely to go home, and thrash their wife/children and cause trouble. This form of alcoholism is more prominent among poor people. Yes, the people who dont have money to even buy two square meals, and they spend money on buying cheap alcohol. Even if their wife/children are starving OR even if the children dont go to school for lack of school fees or uniform or books, they dont hesitate to squander money to drink liquor and cause trouble.
I suppose that such type of alcoholism exists more only in India and other third-world countries and in Europe or USA, it is negligible. |

10 litres per year of pure ethanol /person - translated to glasses of wine per day in America:
one glass of wine (150 mL) is equivalent to one beer or one shot of spirits?
If wine is averaged to %10 alcohol, then 10 L ethanol = 100 L of wine /year /capita
100 L / 150 mL (a glass) = 667 glasses of wine /year
667 / 365 d/year = 1.8 glasses per day per person.
However, half the population is either too young or 'claims' to be 'tea totalers', so:
We are talking 4 glasses per day for just those who drink?
From an ex alcoholic before AVRT, electrolyte and neurotransmitter replacement, who binge drank 6 glasses /day
this sounds in the 'ball park'. Corrections and or suggestions? Perhaps the per capita is limited to those over 21?

@Winelover: Your math fails. A typical bottle of wine contains 750 ml. That makes 1% of the bottle 7,5 ml. If you have a 12% alcohol content, you then have to multiply this by 12 (which you obviously failed/neglected to do).
A 750 ml bottle of wine with 12% alcohol content contains 90 ml of pure alcohol.
14800/90 = 164,4 bottles of wine (12%) per person in a year. 164,4/52 = 3,16 bottles per week which gives 3,16/7 = 0,45 bottle per day.
In other words, you and your partner share a bottle of wine every day. Yes, it's a lot (in most peoples standards anyway) but not unrealistic at all - and pretty far from your absurd "5 bottles a day" statement. |

Hi, I am trying to find some as recent as possible figures regarding total alcohol sales for different countries, especially Japan, US and UK. In other terms, total spend on alcohol as % of GDP for different countries?
Does anyone have any idea where I can find this data. Any help much appreciated. Thanks. |

"Luxembourg sells the most alcohol in Europe per capita. However, the large proportion of alcohol purchase by customers from neighbouring countries contributes to the statistically high level of alcohol sales per capita; this level of alcohol sales is thus not representative of the actual alcohol consumption of the Luxembourg population."
In terms of problematic "binge" drinking, the following study puts Ireland on top with a third of its people binging, with Finland, Britain and Denmark also high (each are about 1/4 bingers). http://www.finfacts.com/irishfinancenews/article_10009454.shtml |

@Wine Lover, at 14% alc/vol, a 750ml bottle of wine has 105ml of pure alcohol, bringing it to about 0.4 bottles of wine per day, which is a lot but not unrealistic.
Interesting that Russia and Australia are actually not that high despite their respective reputations |
des 16th December 2010 |
Wine Lover, dude, where did you get those 7.5 ml bottles of wine, from a dollhouse? |
Wine Lover 14th December 2010 |
France has a 14.8 liter per capita alcohol consumption ... that equals 14,800 ml. The typical bottle of wine has 7.5 ml of pure ethanol in it (at 12% alcohol). 14,800 ml divided by 7.5 ml equals 1,973 bottles of wine per person per year. That's 5 bottles of wine per person per day. That is not even believable. |

These numbers are so vague, besides Russia, China and India, where are Chile, Argentina and Brasil...all producers of wine. what about the African countries and Oceanic countries big producers and consumers of beer.
We already know about the UK and Ireland but the total amount is divided into the whole population that's why Luxenbourg appears as one of the highest and the US one of the med-lowest.....the fact is.. everyone likes to get drunk because everyone is frustrated and need to escape from reality |

what does per capita mean, really need to know ? |

well this is slightly jaded, because the american drinking age is 21, while in europe it is 18, and in other countries, there is no drinking age. its hard to test all the underage drinking that goes on in america and other countries too. and like andre said, the percentages are varied. |

Unlike the Seattle comment, *this* is the only reasonable, adequate, and sensible way to analyse alcohol consumption.
Portuguese drink wine, but the % alcohol differs from the Italian ones.
Czechs drink beer, but the % alcohol differs from the Belgian ones.
Even with vodka, there are 38% and 80%! So shut up and quit the booze! |

Surely it CAN'T be litres of pure alcohol?!?! One litre of pure alcohol is aproximately = 2 litres of spirits (whisky, vodka etc) So that would mean that every single person in Luxemborg consumes around 31 Litres of spirits a year. That's a little less than one bottle of vodka a week for every man woman and child in the country, or four bottles a week for the average family!!!! |
ZUma (Canada) 21st March 2009 |
I agree with Flux.
but on a lighter note .. we all know that Americans drink piss, so they don't really count! |
drinkeepoo (Seattle) 4th March 2009 |
This is a thoroughly useless stat - it needs to be measured by alcohol content, not total volume. Czechs drink beer, Russians drink vodka - a liter does not = a liter. |
Ken (San Francisco) 1st March 2009 |
Seems like Europe has the vast majority of nations in the top 30. Asia and Africa are out of the picture, and Russia's famed alcohol consumption doesn't make the list either. Is this just because statistics are more readily available in Europe and America? Seems odd. |
vanessa (new zealand) 17th June 2006 |
Luxembourg drink a lot of alcohol.. i mean they even beat France and there known to drink wine all the time.. GO LUXEMBOURG!! |
