Statistics about mortality are sensitive values and should be provided in stages. The average life span once given as a row number, should be broken down by quarter. What percentage of the population under 15 make it to the next stage. The mortality of 15 to 30 often reflects the wars that country experience. the stage between 30 years old to 60 years old can reflect the presence of serious deadly illnesses such as cancer and other incurable deseases. The phase over 60 will show a very different ranking. those results should evidence the difference between wealthy and sick elderlies. Developped countries with sophisticated health care systems, can maintain sick old people for years in nursing homes. Creating a semi zombie population in vegetative state. |

What about the quality of life? What is the big deal about living longer if your life sucks with pain and mental decline due to old age.
I would rather live a shorter life but filled with good health both physical and mental, then aging to the max and just rust away physically and mentally. |
Lolo 9th September 2010 |
It would have a greater credibility in my opinion, if it wasn't the CIA the one to measure this, any educated and well informed person knows Cubans for instance enjoy a higher life expectancy than that of the US population. |

Macau and Andora should be excluded as they are not countries in the proper sense,but more importantly they are tax havens which attract wealthy,often elderly, foreign residents who skew the figures. |

It's not really surprising to see that countries with a higher standard of living generally have longer-living people. But there are distortions that can effect the numbers, such as war (where men are more often in combat), starvation and disease affecting the very old and very young harder. I would be interesting to see "life expectancy at age X" for each country and displayed properly on a graph.
It might also be interesting to see a chart or race / ethnic backround, and perhaps diet as well. |

Whilst I agree with many of the comments, nutrition is definately a factor (amongst other things)especially with the so called "developed" nations. Compare the obesity levels to the life expectancy, there are a few anomolies but the fattest nations lose 6 years! Thanks you McDonalds.
And as an aside, rice (the brown variety) is good for you! |

Gabe, this Website is NOT crazy actually it is amazingly accurate considering all the data NationMaster has compiled... Asians live longer because of their diet consisting primarily of vegetables, and their state of consciousness. Ever heard of Tai Chi pal? Go have your fried fish and chips and see how long that will keep your arteries cleared of FAT!!! |

Andrew in Ireland 13th July 2009 |
I have often wondered about life expectancy figures and how their values don't distinguish between high infant mortality, and deaths in later life.
In other words, if you live in a country with a life expectancy of 65 years, or a country with one of 80 years, once you have made it past twenty (say) presumably the figures come much closer together.
Is there an accepted measure of life expectancy that reflects the actual age of mortality of the people?
just curious! |
imp 7th May 2009 |
Of course organic food, tofu and seafood is not helping. It's just a try to make business on low quality and highly priced food. Tofu companies want you to think it's more healthy than standard beacon, egg, fruits, cornflakes etc. But if you like seafood or anything, well, it won't hurt you. |
christina 5th May 2009 |

Joseph (NYC) 16th November 2007 |
To Hakan of Turkey,
Infant mortality has a big effect on life expectancy. Many childhood diseases kill people between ages 0 and 5, which brings down the average a few years even in industrialized countries. Someone who lives long enough to be a parent has survived those risky years and will probably live past the life expectancy. |
Muyinda Bruhan (Uganda) 26th October 2007 |

I'd give Cuban healthcare statistics as much credence as Soviet tractor production figures from Stalin's time. |
Cesar (Mexico) 31st July 2006 |
It is a BIG LIE about the "excellent" healthcare facilities in Cuba; there is no such thing. They have a good life expectancy because they don't have a lot of leisure. Their healthcare, though it's universal, is horrible, but they do have the VERY basics. Also their meal is very simple, meaning they do not have the freedom to eat what they want, including non-healthy meals. |
Martha (ViƱa del Mar, Chile) 16th May 2006 |
These statistics must be updated! the lates statistics shows that CHILE and COSTA RICA life expectancy is 77 years after CUBA with 78 years which has the highest in Latin America. |
demographer from HongKong 27th November 2005 |
Faclicia: the lady that used to work for your dad died at age 130? According to Guinness Record the longest living person was a french women who lives to 121. If you look at the result from census being carried out in Africa. you see a lot of people being age 60, 70, age 80, and age 90 but very few in between. They simply have no idea about their actual ages and they just guess them. Therefore it is fair to say that the self-report ages from most elderly African are very unreliable. Furthermore, most people in the western world do acknowledge there is widespread poverty in USA. We do talk about this and most people understand it is just as difficult to tackle as poverty in anywhere else. |
Enlightened One 25th November 2005 |
What are you going on about Felicia Johnson!
Fact: African poverty and political problems cause them to have low education levels.
Fact: Africans work hard labour as they are developing - westerners type on a PC as I am doing.
Fact: Stop saying blessed
Fact: Media exposes Africa in a negative and sad way usually for charities to need to buy Western pity
Fact westerners live in USA Europe where did you find out they live in Africa - in Southern Africa they are hunted |
HK demographer 16th October 2005 |
David Gealikman: partly true. But obesity and overweight among Australian and the Swedes are just as serious; American smokes much less than the Japanese, the Swiss and the Greek. Drugs is more or less a similar problem in most of the western world. However the countries I mentioned all live 3-5 years longer than American. Actually the white, suburban middle class in USA lives just as long as their European counterpart. One major reason responsible for the difference: the 'black-spots' of extreme poverty in inner city urban areas. In places such NYC's Harlem and Michigan downtown, unemployment, very high violent crime rate, lack of medical cover etc. all result a life expectancy at birth of around 60 years. (much lower than what is recorded in North Korea or Iraq or Vietnam now) It is these Blackspots which are dragging down the average life expectancy at birth of the whole USA overall. |
David Gealikman 15th October 2005 |
The reason so many American die young is obesity cigarettes and drugs. |

In response to Italy:
Cuba has excellent healthcare facilities and an unusually high ratio of doctors per 1,000 people. In fact, Cuba was the first country in the world to establish an AIDs awareness program (1982). There is however little correlation between life expectancy and political freedoms and transparency. As per this list, N. Korea has a higher life expectancy than Latvia and Lithuania. |

As you point out, women live longer than men in most countries. But this is a recent phenomenon, is it not, the result of the large reduction in deaths of women in childbirth? At what point did this change occur? I would guess that until after 1850 in Europe and N America, men had the edge. Are there countries where they still do? |

What is the life expectancy in the world? |
Edria Murray Staff editor 2nd March 2005 |
Life expectancy at birth is one of indicators
of the United Nations
href=/graph/eco_hum_dev_ind&int=-1>human
development index.
Life expectancy at birth is the average
lifespan for people born in that country.
Life expectancy is typically lower in
developing nations due to the high rate of
href=http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/hea_inf_m
or_rat>infant mortality in those countries.
For example in Angola, almost 60% of people will
live to be over 40 and about 35% will reach 65
years. However 19.2% of children die in their
first year, which results in a low average life
expectancy of 36.96 years.
For a different perspective on life expectancy
see also the
href=/graph/hea_pro_of_not_rea_40>probability of
not reaching 40 years and the
probability of reaching age 65 (
href=/graph/hea_pro_of_rea_65_mal>male and
href=/graph/hea_pro_of_rea_65_fem&int=-1>female<
/a>) |
