This data is wrong. I live in Japan and we had 30000 people suicideing almost every year an rate is still increasing.

Before any country pats itself on
the back for having low amounts_
They are using very old data
Much has changed in the world
regarding suicide from 1994 & 1995
They really need to update this site!

'One would never consider that the high rate of male sucides is due to the fact that they are much weaker than women would they? Perhaps if they realized that it is the male who is the weaker sex, they could seek help more easily.'

This is an unnecessary comment. There are many factors at play that don't show by looking at the numbers alone Kathy. (Military service, inability to provide for loved ones, ..) Commenting in this way is certainly isn't going to improve the world we live in.

Kathy, the two males who replied to you like that are typical of so many males and it shows that they think with the brain that is directly above their testicles that you would to turn to pulp. GOOD for you...GO GIRL!

It would be interesting to see this along side a table showing use of benzodiazepine and other tranqualizers and antidepressants. I firmly beleive that thier use and subsequest dependance causes increaced tendancy for suicide. Not the other way around.
I love the fact that Jamaca is down the end. Sun sand and sensi. Yea.

@Tony Vincent: I could be wrong, but I think that the reason why African countries aren't listed on this list is because those countries don't report the cause of death when they report statistics to the World Health Organization.

I would strongly caution anyone about jumping to conclusions based on a lack of data.

It's interesting that Africa with the lowest standard of living in most of their countries is only featured in no 79(Egypt). The abundance of basic necessities like food and shelter (Picking fruit off a tree and sleeping under it) may be less stressfull than in a cold industrialised enviornment.

I beleive it is a narrow minded view to consider the idea that the person commiting suicide should think about the other people it will affect. Usually those who consider suicide who thought about it for a long time -it isn't a spur of the moment decision. They can see no other way of dealing with what troubles them - unfortunately the markers to help recognise someone in need of help can be very hard to identify.

I belive that suicide is not the answer to anything but infact it is the start of a new epidemic. People who often commit suicide don't think about the other people that it will affect. There loved ones often suffer the consequences and are often left with a lot of questions on why what happened happened. And can often lead up to others commiting suicide.

In your excellent site I am having difficulty finding statistics for suicide rates. If possible, I would like them by state (in the US), and country . Normally, one finds a chart which includes gender, age, and at times mode (firearms, poison, etc.), social class, race. I looked under Mortality, but suicide is not listed. Kindly advise how to obtain this data.

Thank you in advance for your help.
